| Everywhere Reginald went, he brought his message with him. For the downtrodden, the impovrished, and the masses without hope, he was a godsend. And, despite the doubts of the richer and therefore more sane, he knew just what god he was sent by and for what purpose. The meek, he had been told, would inherit the Bloodbowl pitch, and he, through guidance from above, would teach them how. For it wasn't money, fame or glory that drove his team onward, it was Valhalla. Valhalla, mystic heaven of the warrior, noble hall of the Nordic gods. A spot at the table where the food never ran out and the beer steins were always full. A place where the tales of glory from thousands of generations were told without end. Reginald promised those vagabonds who would listen and believe that it was a land that he could lead them to. As far as they could tell, he himself was already there. * * * * * * * "I hear you, and I listen." The rest of the Vagabonds watched with curiosity as their team leader spoke with the nothingness in front of him, a reverent look on his face. Others outside of the team wondered if maybe these talks were merely a late stage of some wild disease that Reginald had picked up in his meetings with professional women, or whether perhaps years of living a life of incredible hardship and danger had cracked him. But the Vagabonds had faith, and as Reginald led them onto the pitch for their first game, a game which they were hired to lose to a High Elf team in need of extra glory, the fire in his eyes tinted his words as well. Reginald turned from the nothingness to the Vagabonds, a look of fire in his bright and energetic eyes. "Brothers," he said, "Thor, god of the thunders, warrior son of Odin, has promised me the first step to Valhalla, here tonight. Just as Thor wields mighty mjolnir against such horrors that would cause our deaths by sight alone, he wields us. Tonight, we are Thor's hammer, and tonight, we win." The High Elves watched the homeless humans that were to be nothing more than fodder for a crowd hungry for elvish triumph with a mix of curiosity, repulsion and derision. Smirks were traded amongst the confident immortals as the filthy and mangy humans across the pitch went through their strange and quaint pregame rituals. Cheers arose from the Vagabonds as Reginald's infectious passion caught amongst them. And when the game was over naught five minutes later and the High Elf team was done playing Bloodbowl forever, the cheers were deafening. Reginald, whose promises seemed empty to all but the faithful, had delivered. And it was just the beginning. |
