<h5>The Aiel are a people that live in the Aiel Waste. They will never fight with a sword, but they are proficient with spears and without weapons. Aiel warriors wear cadin'sor, and veil themselves with the shoufa before attacking, which they refer to as "dancing the spears". Aiel women (except for Maidens of The Spear) wear shawls and bulky skirts, as well as much jewelry--multiple bracelets and necklaces, of gold, silver or ivory, often bejeweled, though finger rings are mostly unknown.

They refer to those who live outside the Waste as "wetlanders", except for the Cairhienin, who they have called "treekillers" since the Aiel War. When they conquer, they consider it their right to take "the fifth", or one-fifth of the losers' possessions.

Aiel do not like to ride, preferring their own legs, though they do use pack horses and mules. They do not use wheeled vehicles, because of the lack of wood in the Waste and the rough terrain.

They are considered mighty warriors, but their origins were in a peaceful people who followed the Way of The Leaf before the Breaking of The World. Their name means "dedicated" in the Old Tongue. This secret was known only to clan chiefs and Wise Ones until Rand al'Thor, the Car'a'carn, revealed it.</h5>
<h3>Ji’e’toh</h3>
The Aiel way of life is dominated by ji’e’toh, the code of honor and obligation. There are many different levels of honor to be gained. In battle, for example, the smallest honor is to be gained through killing, for anyone can kill. The greatest honor is to be gained by touching an armed enemy without harming him. Honor is valued above all else in Aiel society.

Just as honor has many levels, so does shame have many levels. At many of these levels, an Aiel would prefer death to the shame. It is toh, obligation, which dominates this code. Toh must be met in full, to the point that an Aiel will accept shame to meet toh.

Gai’shain are Aiel taken prisoner during battle. They are required by ji’e’toh to serve their captor for a year and a day. Through this period, they touch no weapon and do no violence. They wear pure white, to distinguish them from other Aiel. In fact, a gai’shain will not wear anything that another Aiel might wear; they will go unclothed until they can find gai’shain white.

Certain people may not be made gai’shain. Wise Ones, children under fifteen, and women with children under ten may not be made gai’shain. Also, blacksmiths may not be made to wear the white, as this would deprive the hold of their extremely valuable services.

<h3>The Aiel Prophecies</h3>
When the Trollocs come out of the Blight again, we will leave the Three-fold Land and take back our places of old.
~
We will know him when we see him, for he will be marked. He will come from the west, beyond the Spine of the World, but be of our blood. He will go to Rhuidean, and lead us out of the Three-fold Land. Under his sign he will conquer.
~
The stone that never falls will fall to announce his coming. Of the blood, but not raised by the blood, he will come from Rhuidean at dawn, and tie you together with bonds you cannot break. He will take you back, and he will destroy you.
~
He shall spill out the blood of those who call themselves Aiel as water on sand, and he shall break them as dried twigs, yet the remnant of a remnant shall he save, and they shall live.

<h3>Maiden's Kiss</h3>
Maidens' Kiss is a game that the Maidens of The Spear find highly amusing to play in groups. They hold a man immobile with the points of their spears to his neck, and each of the Maidens takes a kiss from him If she thought it was a good kiss, they eased up with the spears. If not, they pushed a little harder; to encourage, you might say.
