The Escapees started out as just that. Originally the lads were enslaved in the Chaos Dwarven workcamp of M'Kirn Nulgoon. Vrune and Thurundus noticed each other's talent and strength. They noticedhow effortlessly the other dragged ore carts to and fro. They saw how famine did not seem to affect them. The bull centaurs also noticed the exceptional rage of Bargerath, and the duo became a trio.

This core unit of three captives started to formulate a plan for freedom. They picked out the hardiest and most rugged hobgoblins and recruited them. With 10 of these bruisers by their side, the trio busted their way out of M'Kirn Nulgoon and out into the open. (The details of this escape are still unclear. No witnesses were left alive, and any Blood Bowl reporter who questions a team member about it ends up similarly not alive)

Initially, as the Escapees moved from town to town, they played Blood Bowl games to earn money to eat. However, because Vrune and Thurundus had picked the most steadfast hobgoblins in the work camp, the group did not eat much. The fledgeling team acquired a lot of money very quickly. Operating costs were non-existent, since transportation was selfprovided, lodging was never considered, and the hobgoblins were too ignorant to ask for a salary.

The M'Kirn Nulgoon administration was very surprised to receive a message from Vrune and Thurundus three months after their escape, offering to buy their own freedom at triple their worth. The mining operation badly needed the money to repair the damage done during the jailbreak, and was financially forced to accept. This added to the already decreasing popularity of the mines. Most M'Kirn Nulgoon employees considered it a sign of weakness to barter with slaves. Several of these individuals left their posts to join the Escapees team, including Prefectus and Xabierl.

The mine of M'Kirn Nulgoon was eventually shut down due to constant worker riots. Meanwhile, the Escapees franchise continues to go strong. The Escapees still refuse to transport or lodge their players, although they now play salaries to several blockers, and Messy, who lived long enough to figure out the scam.
