The melody for IOI is taken from "The Viking March", by Karl L. King (1891-1971), known then as the director of the band for the Barnum and Bailey Circus, but whose reputation now rests upon his prodigious output of Marches. The text was added by the IU band director Russell P Harker, who later became lieutenant governor of Indiana.

Indiana, Our Indiana was first performed by the IU Band (later known as the Marching Hundred) in November of 1912, at a football game against Northwestern.
