When a tournament was announced in Altdorf with the grand prize been official sponsorship by the Emperor himself and a large amount of funding with the intention of driving the team on to win in the majors, a large number of teams turned out hoping to be number 1. Most teams threw themselves at each game, usually taking significant casualties in the process. At the end of the tournament the winners emerged battered and bloody with very few players alive let alone fit to play again, the whole idea looked like it had backfired and so was cancelled.
</p><p ><p>The coach of the "official winners" was one Mr Baz "the Bruiser" Bruce who was most unhappy to have most of his team killed for no return so he came up with a cunning plan which he put forward to the Emperor. He would gather the best of the remaining battle hardened players and form in his eyes an elite "super" team. The surving players of each team (although happy to be alive) were crest fallen but not all were willing to give up and many took up Baz's offer at joining his new currently unnamed team.

After much debating with his staff and accountants the Emperor was heard to quietly whisper "ah what the hell its a longshot" before declaring to the court his decision to sponsor the newly formed team. As a small taunt to the Emperor Mr Bruce decided to officially name them the Longshots
