Chapter 1, A Bed and Breakfast in the Foothills of Yorkshire

Karl Gutenberg and his wife, Francesca, left Germany after the war to start a new life in a land less dominated by ideology. They were a happy couple. They were comfortably strolling through middle age and doted on one another. They took their savings and started a bed and breakfast called Das Guten Handenshaken, which means The Good Handshake in German. They smiled at guests and humbly served them the same simple fare they had enjoyed in their youth in the countryside of rustic Germany. Their Bavarian Waffles, which means Tall-Hat Waffles in bavarian, were simple yet so chewy, so savory, so warm and buttery sweet. They were famed throughout the surrounding towns for their excellent waffles, and they always had many guests for breakfast.

Tom Dobbins, an aged gentleman from nearby Ripley, reads his paper each morning at the B&B. He likes to do the crossword puzzles, and his favorite item (other than the waffles of course!) on the menu is the blueberry scone! He drinks tea with lemon and cream but no sugar. He has known both Francesca and Karl for some time, but is taciturn, and they are comfortable but silent friends.

Gary Greer is a famous pro crickett player. He lives in semi-retirement on a huge estate in the country between Ripley and Swanwick. He loves the waffles with maple syrup more than anything, although he's also very partial to Francesca's cinnamon rolls. He drinks coffee, milk and 3 sugar cubes.

Montblanc, a connoisseur of wine from faraway France, wants to get in on the action. He is trying to convince Karl to sell him half of the B&B and convert part of it into a bar. Karl is resistant to the idea but cordial. So far, Montblanc has persisted in his attempts to sway Karl. Montblanc moved into the B&B in an attempt to get closer to Karl and hopefully gain his confidence. He drinks copious amounts of wine except at breakfast, when he drinks tea straight and eats buttered toast with preserves.

Laura Sweet is an exotic dancer, past her prime and jaded. She is like a long-lost daughter to the Gutenberg's, and they dote on her. She hides her other life from them and hates herself, but has a serious addiction to opium, and the cost of her habit drives her. She keeps up the charade for the Gutenberg's sake. They know something is wrong, but have no idea how wrong her life has gone. She drinks coffee with cream and sugar, and her favorite dish is the fried potatoes with rosemary and pepper.

Delilah is the maid. She was taken in by the Gutenbergs after a visit to Africa in their 30's. They think that she is a simpleton, and assign her tedious chores such as washing the laundry and peeling potatoes. She has learned english fluently in the 15 years that she's been with them, and finds it more advantageous to feign ignorance. She steals money at every chance. Her favorite dish is the Bavarian Waffles with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar.

Raj is the cook. The Gutenbergs used to do all of the cooking themselves, but as they move on toward old age they've slowed down, and hired Raj in Ripley. He is a stick-thin jolly man with a high pitched voice and a thick Indian accent. He is kind to all and always ready with a joke. He's also a covert operative for a Pakistani terrorist group gathering intel on England's defensive measures. Raj brings traditional Indian food from home for all of his meals, and refuses to sample the Gutenberg's heathen food.

Bill White is a dear friend of the Gutenbergs. He lives on the outskirts of Ripley and has been fixing their B&B for 8 years. He is completely devoted to them. Or is he? He drinks tea with milk and lemon, no sugar. His favorite dish is Bavarian Waffles with stewed strawberry sauce.

Maxwell Vermillion is the youngest son of a minor noble in Transylvania. His brother banished him from Transylvania for fear of a murder plot, and he lives on a modest allowance provided for him by his aging father. He stays at the B&B because he loves the waffles and because he has nowhere to go, no one to see. He drinks tea with cream and sugar, no lemon. His favorite dish is the waffles with banana, brown sugar, and butter.

Jesus Gonzalez is a massive hulk of a man, but born a simpleton. As the Gutenbergs have never been able to have children of their own, they raised him as their own. He tends the house and does simple chores for the Gutenbergs. He is silent and is a good deterrent to would-be criminals, although no one really knows what he would do if faced with an intruder who meant harm. He drinks water and milk sweetened with honey for a treat. He eats all the leftovers.

Karl Gutenberg drinks tea with milk and sugar. He loves bacon doused in maple syrup more than anything else.

Francesca Gutenberg drinks tea with milk, lemon and sugar. She loves Bavarian Waffles with just a little butter.

Chapter 2; Francesca is killed.

Someone has killed Francesca.
