The Red River winds through the heart of Cathay, carrying ruddy silt from the mountains, many fortunes in silk and trade goods -- and, four thousand years ago, the blood of thousands of men, engaged in a fierce civil war. The river reaches the ocean at Fu Chow, and is the source of the city's great wealth -- and the name of their collegiate sports teams, the Crimson Tide.

Wars have raged in Cathay for centuries, but in recent years, Fu Chow has been largely protected from their ravages. The Chaos and Hobgoblin incursions of the northeast have little bearing on the fortunes of a city a thousand miles away, and while last century's long war with Nippon was fought on the coast, the Shogun's forces largely avoided Fu Chow, perhaps knowing that both nations benefited from its economic power. Only the malevolent Dark Elves provide any threat to the city, and they've been seen off the coast increasingly rarely in recent decades.

As befits the wealthiest city of the East, Fu Chow has one of the best-funded universities in the known world, a center of research, magic and the fine arts. The Blood Bowl team plays in the league's grandest stadium, enjoys luxurious training facilities, and is outfitted with the finest uniforms and equipment -- including some magical items. They also have the advantage of a significant population of elven students from the city's High Elf quarter. The sons and daughters of wealthy merchants and nobles, these Elves are technically citizens of Ulthuan, but most come from families that have lived in Fu Chow for generations, adopting Cathayan customs and even surnames.

The Crimson Tide and their fans see themselves as above the rough, underhanded brawling tactics of many college Blood Bowl sides. Instead, they choose to focus on playmaking and speed, favoring the passing game more than any other College Blood Bowl team. Because so many of their players come from wealthy families, and so many wealthy families are donors or sponsors of the team, the coaches are routinely leaned on to discourage dangerous physical play. (In the past, the team has gone far enough as to lend the use of their apothecaries to their opponents!) Understandably, this doesn't make them popular with the fans of rival teams, who see the Tide as stuck-up, self-important, and soft. What really angers the opposition, though, is how often they win.
