SEASON 2 PREVIEW

While the Stompers are a new team on the DLE circuit, they have one player who ranks among the most anticipated freshmen in college Blood Bowl: quarterback Veronika Roderickson. Known as "The Stirland Cannon," Roderickson has been a high-profile prospect for years, and her arm is at the center of head coach Albert Halfling's plans for the season. The Stompers intend to employ a passing-based offense this year, with Hieronymus Boldt and Emme Walden as Roderickson's prime targets.

On defense, Ostermark native Hartmut "The Hippogriff" Hass looks to lead the team in sacks; Hass was originally slated to play for the Ostermark Bandits before decommitting and signing with the Stompers. The massive Ostlander Valeska Doering anchors the line.

Wurtbad, the capital of Stirland, is a rare outpost of wealth in the hardscrabble lands of the eastern Empire, and most of that wealth comes from one thing: wine. The Wurtbad Vintner's Guild is one of the most powerful trade organizations in the entire nation -- most of the Empire's wine comes from Stirland, and if you want to sell wine in Stirland, you have to go through the Guild. To ensure the continued quality of the region's exports, and maintain control over its practitioners, they require winemakers to be certified by the Guild.

At any given time, the Wurtbad Wine College -- a sort of hybrid of school and apprenticeship -- enrolls several hundred students. Many are local youth who have shown a knack for the trade, but increasingly, foreign vintners are seeking to earn the Guild's seal of approval as a means of certifying their wines' quality in a crowded marketplace. Tuition for the latter is high, making the College a lucrative venture for the guild.

Of course, the value of a WWC diploma is dependent on the name recognition of Wurtbad among wine aficionados, which has led the Guild to field a collegiate Blood Bowl team. While the players are nominally enrolled in the school, it's an open secret that the Guild spends large sums of gold recruiting top Blood Bowl prospects from across the eastern Empire. Most players end up spending far more time practicing the game and touring the Old World than actually learning how to make wine. (With some exceptions -- star catcher Norbert Ziegenfuss suffered a catastrophic knee injury in his senior year, preventing him from moving on to pro Blood Bowl, but two decades later, his vineyard is thriving.)

While there's no denying the talent the scouts manage to put together on a regular basis, they haven't managed to get the chemistry right thus far. As a result of their far-flung origins -- and possibly a little too much sampling of the university's projects -- the Stompers don't always play together as well as one might like. Still, they're a reliable bet to put on a good show, and against the right opponent, they can really rise to the occasion.
