Born in the United States, Yoko learned to speak Japanese through her mother. At some point, Yoko joined Umbrella as an employee of Dr. William Birkin, working in his Laboratory eight miles outside of Raccoon City.

In 1996, Yoko took part in an experiment to test the effects of the t-Virus, and, after a "little incident", she fled. The memories of what occurred were so traumatic that her mind hid them from her to protect her.

In 1993, her friend and fellow journalist Kurt went to the north-west Arklay Mountains investigating suspicious deaths in a hospital. During his investigation, he was attacked by Albert Lester's alternate alias - the "Axe Man". He was injured, and remained at the Suspension Bridge until Alyssa's arrival.

The two then hid from the "Axe Man" in the hospital, where they were again attacked. Whilst escaping the hospital, she saw Kurt on the floor being eaten alive by a zombified Dorothy Lester.

While at J's Bar with eight guests; Cindy Lennox the waitress and Will the bartender, the police became aware of the situation and prepared to evacuate civilians. A roadblock would be built up too late to stop Will from being mauled by a zombie, causing the occupants to flee before more arrived.

Jim is seen in J's Bar doing a crossword puzzle when a zombie walks in and attacks Will the bartender. Finding himself caught in the Raccoon City Destruction Incident, he and the other survivors from J's Bar begin to find a way out of the city. Jim is the canon protagonist of the scenario Underbelly, where the survivors find themselves fleeing into the subway system to escape the zombie infested streets. Upon arrival, they find that the area is infested with Giant Fleas infected with the t-Virus, and they are forced to fight off the largest one, Giga Bite, to escape with a detached subway car.

Mark recalls in his ending to "Wild Things" that his old man told him that there wasn't a place left on Earth that wasn't touched by war. Somewhere between the ages of eighteen and twenty-seven, Mark was part of the US invasion force sent into then-South Vietnam to protect it from the north.

At some point afterwards, Mark settled down in the mid-west and had a wife and son by the 1990s. His job by the September of 1998 was as a security guard for a local firm.

Cindy Lennox was a waitress at J's Bar in Raccoon City. She's a helpful, service-oriented person who always thinks of other people first. Being accustomed to the harsh realities of society, she never loses her cool, even in extreme situations.

In the 1960s, Lord Oswell E. Spencer, Dr. James Marcus and his student Brandon Bailey discovered the Progenitor virus in West Africa. The Progenitor virus possessed mutagenic characteristics, which would drastically alter the physical and mental makeup of its host.

Marcus and Spencer planned to use the virus to create biological weapons, forming the Umbrella Corporation along with their mutual friend, Sir Edward Ashford. Following Ashford's death in an experiment with the virus,[citation needed] Marcus soon began to work on the prototypes of a malicious biological weapon.
