Chief Petty Officer Miles Edward O'Brien, played by Colm Meaney, is a character in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. O'Brien was originally the transporter chief of the USS Enterprise-D. He was later promoted to Chief of Operations of Deep Space Nine. O'Brien is the only major Star Trek character described as both ethnically Irish and born on Earth in Ireland.

The backstory of the character states that Miles O'Brien was born in Killarney, a town in County Kerry in Ireland, Earth, in September 2328.[3] He claims descent from Brian Boru, the famous Ard Rí, or High King of Ireland (and founder of the O'Brien Clan). His father, Michael O'Brien, wanted him to play the cello, so he pursued this and was eventually accepted into the Aldebaran Music Academy (revealed in DS9 episode "Shadowplay"). However, a few days before he was scheduled to start classes there, he enlisted in Starfleet. O'Brien can also be seen playing the cello as part of Data's string quartet early in the TNG episode "The Ensigns of Command". In the DS9 episode "Invasive Procedures", it is revealed he has two brothers.

The TNG episode "The Wounded" establishes that O'Brien served as tactical officer aboard the USS Rutledge during the Cardassian War and that he was emotionally scarred by the Cardassians' massacre of hundreds of civilians on Setlik III. O'Brien does not remember how many Cardassians he killed, because he killed so many (Star Trek DS9: "The Inquisition"). In that episode, it is clear that the classic Irish tune "The Minstrel Boy" plays a major part of his journey as a character: an innocent man thrown into the destructive nature of war. He sings the song in this episode, and much later, in the final episode of DS9 "What You Leave Behind". "The Minstrel Boy" is the first musical theme to be heard in the flashback sequence.

In the DS9 episode "Bar Association", O'Brien jokingly claims to be a direct descendant of real-life Irish High King Brian Boru (according to Irish tradition, all people with the surname "O'Brien" are descendants thereof). Later, he speaks more seriously of fictional ancestor Sean Aloysius O'Brien, a major player in one of the first United States workers' unions, who participated in the Coal Strike of 1902 in Pennsylvania and was shot, then dumped into the Allegheny River. In the episode "Rules of Engagement", it is revealed that during O'Brien's 22 years in Starfleet, he had fought in 235 separate battles and had been decorated by Starfleet on 15 occasions, and was considered to be an expert in starship combat.

Deanna Troi was a half-Betazoid, half-Human Starfleet officer. Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, she served as ship's counselor aboard the USS Enterprise-D and the USS Enterprise-E. In 2379, Troi transferred to the USS Titan. (Star Trek: The Next Generation; Star Trek Nemesis)

As a half-Betazoid, Troi was capable of extra-sensory empathy, but was incapable of reading aliens with brain structures dissimilar to Humans and other Betazoids, such as the Breen and the Ferengi. Like most Betazoids, Troi had telepathic abilities. Due to her half-Human heritage, however, the range of her telepathic abilities was limited compared to full-blooded Betazoids, and she could usually only read the thoughts of other Betazoids, most notably her mother. Troi's empathic skills made her an important asset to the Enterprise-D and her abilities were often particularly useful when dealing with hostile races. Since she could usually determine, through use of her abilities, whether others were lying, she repeatedly proved herself invaluable in many suspenseful situations. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint", "Ménage à Troi", "The Loss"; VOY: "Inside Man")

Deanna was born on March 29, 2336, near Lake El'nar on Betazed. She was born to Betazoid Ambassador Lwaxana Troi and Human Starfleet officer Ian Andrew Troi. Deanna was actually the second of their two children, the first being Kestra Troi, born in 2330. However, Kestra drowned when Deanna was an infant. Stricken with grief and regret, Lwaxana removed all evidence of Kestra's existence from her own life and even repressed all memories of Kestra. She also made her husband swear never to mention Kestra again. Because of this, Deanna did not learn of her sister until 2370, when Lwaxana's memories resurfaced. (TNG: "Conundrum", "Dark Page")

As required by Betazoid custom, Deanna was genetically bonded with a Human male named Wyatt Miller at a young age. Wyatt was the son of Steven and Victoria Miller, close friends of Deanna's parents. Due to their genetic bonding, Deanna was scheduled to marry Wyatt in adulthood. (TNG: "Haven")

According to her mother, Deanna had a talent for languages as a child. (TNG: "Dark Page") During her adult life, Deanna also recalled having visited Enterprise NX-01 as a little girl, although she was not absolutely sure, as she always got "those museum ships" mixed up. (ENT: "These Are the Voyages...")

As a child living on Betazed, Deanna learned aspects of Human culture from her Human father, Ian. One such aspect was a fondness for stories set during Earth's Ancient West, which he often read to her. (TNG: "A Fistful of Datas") To fall asleep, she would ask him to sing the American song "Down in the Valley"; while this was her favorite, it was his singing that made her feel safe. (TNG: "Dark Page") As she was half-Human and half-Betazoid, she never felt trapped between the two worlds to which she belonged, instead choosing to embrace the richness of her dual heritage. (TNG: "The Emissary") In grammar school as a child, she had to memorize Jonathan Archer's speech at the Federation Founding Ceremony. (ENT: "These Are the Voyages...") She also heard stories from her maternal grandfather, who told them telepathically; something of a traditionalist, he rarely spoke, saying speech was for "offworlders and people who didn't know any better." (TNG: "Eye of the Beholder")

Per Bajoran custom, her family name, Kira, precedes her given name, Nerys. She has two brothers (Kira Reon and Kira Pohl), and her parents' names are Kira Taban (played by Thomas Kopache throughout the series) and Kira Meru (played by Leslie Hope in "Wrongs Darker than Death or Night").

The backstory of the character states that Kira Nerys was born 2343, in Dakhur province, Bajor, during the 50-year Cardassian occupation of the planet. She was raised in a labor camp. Her family were members of the artisan caste, namely sculptors of clay, or potters. At age 12, Kira was recruited into the Shakaar resistance cell, part of an underground movement which carried out guerrilla attacks against Cardassian military and civilians with the ultimate goal of ending the occupation.

Kira is assigned as the senior Bajoran Militia officer aboard Deep Space Nine, acting as the station's executive officer under the Starfleet commander Benjamin Sisko who posted to command the facility. In the early episodes of the series after Cardassia withdrew from Bajor, the recently ranked Major Kira, now at age 26, became an influential figure in Bajor's reconstruction and the politics of the region, due to her assignment to Deep Space Nine, and her closeness to Benjamin Sisko, whom the Bajorans believed to be an emissary from the Bajoran Prophets.

Initially, Kira was opposed to the Federation presence on DS9, feeling that the Bajoran people should have nothing to do with the Federation as Bajor had just endured a 50-year occupation by the Cardassians. Over time, her sentiments changed and she became one of the strongest supporters of Bajor joining the Federation and an essential ally to Benjamin Sisko. This conversely contrasted to her increasingly nuanced religious faith that came from dealing with the Bajoran religious leader, Winn Adami, for whom Kira held increasing contempt for her shamelessly treacherous opportunism and arrogance.

Though she is a member of the Bajoran Militia, Kira is an invaluable help to Starfleet, often commanding Starfleet personnel directly through her authority as DS9's executive officer. Indeed, during the first year of the Defiant's commission at the station, she also serves as the ship's first officer, a situation that only alters upon the arrival of Lt. Commander Worf, who assumes the role as the next most senior Starfleet officer of command grade. When the Dominion recaptures Deep Space Nine at the start of the Dominion War, Kira remains aboard the station as liaison officer, as part of Bajor's non-aggression pact with the Dominion. Her role allows her to organize a resistance cell, including Rom, Quark and Jake Sisko. They smuggle intelligence to Starfleet which indicates that the Dominion has begun to dismantle the minefield preventing Dominion reinforcements arriving from the Gamma Quadrant. She also manages to sabotage the weapons systems, which then allows Starfleet to retake Deep Space Nine.

Kira's experience in the Bajoran Resistance earned her a promotion to a rank equivalent to lieutenant colonel. This is equivalent to a Starfleet field commission of commander, a fact taken advantage of by Starfleet to more easily assist the Cardassian Resistance wage a war of independence against the Dominion. To provide that assistance, Kira, Odo and Garak get smuggled into Cardassia to teach Damar the tactics of organizing a resistance movement with a decentralized command. Their resistance cell manages to infiltrate a Dominion shipyard and steal the Breen weapon against which Federation ships were defenseless. Their actions allowed Starfleet engineers to develop shields that could counter the weapon. At the conclusion of the war (and the end of the series), Kira takes command of DS9 after the disappearance of Sisko.

Quark was a 24th century Ferengi and the eponymous proprietor of Quark's Bar on space station Deep Space 9 (previously known as Terok Nor). He was a constant thorn in the side, sometime adversary, sometime confidante of station Security Chief Odo. Even though he engaged in numerous shady ventures, by Ferengi standards Quark was a compassionate and generous man who proved his worth and loyalty to nearly all DS9 crew members throughout the years, gaining their well-earned respect.
