Editable Nicknames
I understand not wanting to have player names changeable, database issues, record keeping or whatnot.

But what if we could setup nicknames for our players?

sometimes you dont know what kind of player youre going to get, and players gain personality after 100 games.

Bill Finkle might be better identified as
Bill "Butterfingers" Finkle. but it would be silly to nickname him that, and 100games in, he hardly ever drops the ball(or touches it) what if we could make and edit those Nicknames...

could be added after the first space to be middle names, or at the end.

Just for a little more flavor. Not everyone reads a players bio.

Nice idea though

There is no reason why we aren't allowed to change the player names after buying them. Helps with those nasty typos too.

I like the idea. Since it's not me making the effort to code it though, I can understand not implementing it.

I'm pro fluff, but it's not feasible for every neat idea to be implemented.

I approve too! :D

While I can't see why one should be able to change a player's whole name aside from typos (and if you ask nicely and promptly I believe admins will do it for you), I do think that players should be able to be given nicknames. Perhaps only those who reach 31 SPP can have a nickname? One time per player type of thing, so make it meaningful.

Great idea. I very much approve.

Some people get upset enough already when a player dies... Imagine now if it's one they extra special cared about and gave a nickname to!

There will be tears...

lots of love for that!

I like the idea!

I agree.

There was a discussion about it a while back, but nothing happened.

I would like if it was possible at a land-mark, say 51 SPps or such.

It would require a new table in the database, with the player ID as the foreign key, and their nicknames stored as character strings. Very doable, I suppose. More load on the servers, perhaps, as every team or player page request would request data from it.

Problem with this is that people will be childish and break the naming policy and the site rules, but can avoid being caught by changing it again.

So I doubt this will ever happen, despite it being a nice idea.

It is a nice idea - and as mentioned, if the nickname could just be added, once, at a landmark (like 76 spp when the player is pretty likely to have had most of its shocking developments), then it wouldn't be possible to cheat the site rules and naming policy.

That said, I believe the missing skills and existing bugs are much more important at this time.

oh, i think that could easily be avoided woodstock.
lets say you have a time restriction to it, you rename your nickname, only a fixed time later (lets say a week or so) can you access that again.
it would mean that the intention (adding some depth) is still possible, staff would have always 1 week (whats more than enough) to react.

the SPP restriction i dont like so much. a lot of players get their uniqueness through failing, eg try to pick up a ball 10 times with ag4 and failing.
the nickname in its idea would add a dimension that you exactly CANT see through any stat that is allready there. (well... of course sometimes you can, but not necessarily) so, id like to give that tool of fluff building to the team owners, and there is no reason to restrict people for the sole purpose of restriction.

Alternatively, the simplest solution would be to do the same as for images; an admin must approve of the name before it becomes revealed. And if you need a nickname fast, just ask nicely :)

I personally believe that the nicknames, while not necessarily needing a landmark to be given, should be only allowed to be made once. That way it'd be funny irony if you gave a player the name "butterfingers" at the beginning of his career for always dropping the ball with ag4 and he then proceeds to spend the rest of his career a star catcher, presumably to shake off the dreaded reputation that name earned him ;D

Am I just being slow, but is that not what the player bio is for? completely editable and contains lots of space for the player history in gaining said nickname....

also IG you can label the players so you can use your nickname for that, granted only you get to see it but most of the time its only you that cares enough anyway.

Can't see the bio from the team page, and it's just not the same hehe.
