Terrible Dice or Bad Mood?
It's exam time here in Australia, and I usually enjoy playing some fumbbl to let off some steam. Lately I have been feeling like I've read some really bad dice and it has been really frustrating me. I have not been enjoying the games as much as I used to, and in one case not at all. So I wondered if it was bad luck, or perhaps the opposite that I was just in a bad/stressed mood.

So I decided to average out my last four games.

For single D6 rolls, I had an average of 3.39 to my opponents 3.63
For 2D6 rolls, I had an average of 6.63 to my opponents 7.29

Well it seems this wasn't all in my head... probably. I have no idea if that difference is enough to influence games. But I find a level of comfort in it, just a matter of time before things change right?

Okay, back to work

DDS.

I honestly think the average can be almost meaningless. If you need 2+ to pick up what does it matter if you roll all 2s? (average 2 sounds bad though right?).

The new dice stats feature does show up some dicing disasters, but it can't tell the whole story. And in our game (as in many) it was the timing of the 1s rather than the quantity, and that ball scatter catch was something special.

Sorry for the mood dampener. If it's any consolation, I feel great! :P

There are no bad dice. Dice are neither good nor bad.

Results wouldn't be very random if it always averaged out, would it?

Honestly it is probably a chicken and an egg thing. I am sure when I am winning it is easy to enjoy it. And I usually have a lot of fun playing blood bowl, even when I am losing. (otherwise I wouldn't play)

But just being stressed all the time, combined with less than ideal luck, means is exacerbating my bad mood.

And the dice probably don't matter, against dlock I average 3.26 to his 3.52, and on 2d6 I averaged 6.62 to his 7.81. But I won. So, yeah, these dice are probably meaningless.

So maybe I am just a grumpy git :)

I hate the 'chicken and the egg' thing. Has no one ever thought this thru?

Obviously the egg came first. Duh. Can't have a chicken without the egg.

So what laid the egg you ask? Something that was 99.99% chicken, and that last little bit was the evolutionary genetic mutation the created the as-we-know-it chicken.

Feel free to share my genius with the world.

The question is whether an "egg" is defined on what it holds, or who laid it.

So a 99.99% Chicken (say, proto-chicken) lays an egg that contains a chicken.

Is the egg a chicken-egg (because it contains a chicken) or a proto-chicken-egg (because it was laid by a proto-chicken).

Give me the answer and I guess we've nailed the question...

Only Spiros knows the answer.

Maybe you need a break for a week or two? I find playing BB when you're already in a stressy/bad mood often doesn't make things much better ..
Posted by DrDiscoStu on 2016-10-29 03:14:10
Yeah true Jelly but I am currently in a league, so not really an option

If you don't enjoy it as you used to, probably a short break is the best thing. Blood bowl will get people salty, it's its nature, and from time to time everyone needs to get that salt off.

Seriously, attitude is a huge component for some coaches. I do a lot better when I'm feeling it and ready to devote my entire focus. When I don't give a hoot I play worse.

Dice stats are helpful in some ways but it's important to remember that sometimes your 1s come at the worst time. Attitude does play a huge role though, not only in getting you to keep playing but in making even the harder games go from just awful to tolerable.

When you read those numbers my first reaction was to think what do they mean. My second reaction was to think ah he probably concluded that it was all in his head.
How you could conclude from those that it wasn't has me utterly confused.

It's quite amazing how people make the world so much more complicated than it is. The chicken and the egg is the same action, neither came first, they come together. The division between the chicken and the egg is purely linguistic, when infact it's one process. :)
Posted by DrDiscoStu on 2016-10-29 11:13:22
Well Wreckage, my point is more that I choose to believe that it was the dice, it gives me comfort to know I'm not totally crazy. Every single game had me below my opponents in both D6's and 2D6's so I don't think it's fair to say that it was all in my head. If you think you need discrepancies like 2.2 vs 5.0 then I would argue you don't understand statistics across hundreds of dice rolls.

But anyway, thanks for all the other comments. I will take some time off over the xmas/ny break I think.

The chicken and the egg came at the same time. Meaning that before each chicken was born there was an egg, and every egg was laid by a chicken. If you go back far enough at some point you could say things were different enough that the 'egg' is not really an 'egg' anymore or the 'chicken' is not really a 'chicken' anymore. But that is more an arbitrary line because there is not a single point where the whole change happened, just a very gradual process. And you'd have to go back really far not to have an 'egg' - guessing more than hundreds of millions of years (much more probably).

:)

I can be terrible loser! My advice is dont play blood bowl angry or when your life is stressed. The dice will always find a way make your day worse and you will start thinking its just another thing out to get you. Truth is, it is almost certainly in your head if it lasts for a period of time rather than a game here or there.

Also dice stats only really prove that over the course of many dice rolls most things average out. Only 2/3 of those rolls may have been key/game changing ones but statistics wont show you that. Ive looked for averages too, convinced at periods that the dice are out to get me. Clearly they are not, but when you are salty these things take on a life of their own.

Rather than take a break why not create a team with the intention of getting it killed/trashed in a box sprint or something just for fluff and forget about 'winning' at all.
Posted by Lorebass on 2016-10-30 02:43:02
I use the dice stats just to see how many rolls i have made. My winning games tend to have fewer rolls in general against opponents (unless its blocks usually!)

Today the egg definately came first for breakfast followed by roast chicken for lunch.

Chicken egg discussion in essentially meaningless. Species definitions are arbitrary on a spectrum (while still being useful in general).
