Mordheim - They're at it again!
So it seems French publisher Focus has acquired a big dusty old cardboard box from the top shelf of a store cupboard at Games Workshop HQ. They store it somewhere behind the Finecast mis-shapes. In said box is all of the Games Workshop specialist games licences.

Mordheim is next on the table. You can take a look at it here. It's not Cyanide *cheer*, but it does look like they've kept the art style from Blood Bowl. I really enjoyed Mordheim as a game, and I really hope they manage to pull this one off. I'm not confident though. I've watched the gameplay trailer and it looks OK but not great. I like that they've kept the injury/death mechanic as I like that though it'll get nasty in a long term campaign.

Assuming they do have all the licenses I don't know why Mordheim would be their second choice game. Necromunda is, barring Blood Bowl, GWs best ever game for me. I enjoyed GorkaMorka too (though it wasn't nearly as popular) and think that'd translate well into a game.

It's in 'early access' now. Not surprisingly for a company that releases full priced games 5 times instead of incremental updates, you can now play a pre-alpha version for a mere £23! Anyone want in on that? No? You sure?

In alternate news, I may be playing tabletop Mordheim tomorrow night for the first time in about 6 years.

yeah, quite old new this, but none the less interesting. I think this could be pretty good tbh, would rather Necromunder. But mordheim was still decent enough.

The main problem with mordheim is how ridiculously broken rats with slings are. Unless the dice gods are against them they are pretty much unbeatable, I will be interested to see how they address that or if they just ignore that huge problem.

Only heard the name of the game before (shame on me), but it certainly looks interesting! Anything round-based is way more interesting to me than real-time...

Crossbows all mens!

Seems me and jimmy have played this on TT then and already know how to break it HAHA

OP: the game is playable and pretty much fun at it's current state, sure you pay 23 pounds for a game that has still a long way to go til it is finished, but for that money you will get the full game too. And for that money you wouldn't be able to afford a warband on tabletop, I think. I bought it and i don't regret it, fun stuff, nice atmosphere.
Garion: they don't use the tabletop rules in the game. Something similar, but still different.

Focus or cyanide doesn't have a good history in making games finished, so it really is a big risk to invest in that game.

Blood Bowl was nearly unplayable for a year after release and many of the bugs existed for several years.
Dungeonbowl was a disaster of a game, really buggy and a total ripoff really.

My fair warning that you might not (and probably won't) get what you want, when you hop on the Focus-wagon !

PS: And i have invested a lot of hours on both games, because i think the game they try to simulate are awesome. I still know many people who were really really disappointed with the product.

ah well, thats probably a good thing in this case Burnalot. So are people not running around with rats and slings slaughtering everyone now? Could you tell us how it differs or are there too many differences?

From watching the gameplay trailer, the movement is done in rings and zones which looks weird but reasonable. The weapons seem to do numbers of damage (20-50) and the characters seem to have Hit Point amounts, so a big difference from the Str/Tough/Wounds mechanic.

Best Game after Blood Bowl was Man'O'War!
Posted by mister__joshua on 2014-11-25 12:41:27
I always loved the look of Man'O'War but never got to play it. A little before my time. Would love to give it a go now but the models are quite hard to get and they're the best bit of it.

Looks interesting for sure. Agreed, Man o War would have been a great shout.

Some folks from my Amsterdam BB league are just booting up a Necromunda campaign.
Gorkamorka... I'd forgotten about that. Loved reading about all these games in my white dwarf days.

The gameplay video looks pretty good. I like the way they implemented movement points.

It could have been a great game, then I watched the gameplay and saw that it doesn't follow the tabletop rules, so it's a no no for me, so disappointing.

Garion: Yeah no rats with slings slaughtering stuff. Yet.
Well, if you saw the gameplay trailer then you can see that there are two resources for the characters:
Movement Points(blue)) and Offense Points(red). You can move around using the previous(obviously), but they are used to assume so called stances that alter your dodge or parry stats or used to locate traps, change weapon set, disengage from combat or reload (iirc). In the future they will be used to loot other guys and wyrdstone, i think. Offense points are used for regular and special attacks(melee and ranged) and spells.
The other difference is that instead of having one warband do it's whole turn then the other players move their guys according to a so called initiative order(actually you can use blue points to move down the initiative ladder and take you characters turn later).
Characteristics are similar to the ones used in Mordheim, although I have to admit I am not familiar with them yet.
There are rout tests and all alone tests too, so psychology is there.
So it feels and plays like Mordheim, but is different in the mechanics.
Sidenote: if anyone would be interested playing Mordheim online with old rules with me with some updated rules I would be happy to help to do that, just PM me.
Man-O-War sure was a fun beer and pretzel game, but there wasn't a lot of tactical depth there. I like it a lot, but it is pretty unbalanced (Black Ark anyone?) and random.
Posted by Burnalot on 2014-11-25 14:52:41
MattDakka: the major flaw of the tabletop rules was the same as the major flaw of the then current edition of warhammer, namely the distance guessing game before charges. With current WFB charge rules Mordheim would be way more fun.
Posted by mister__joshua on 2014-11-25 15:50:04
@Burnalot: How would you play online with the old rules?
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-11-25 15:59:25
Man O War was busted if you were competitive. Good fun though.
Posted by Lorebass on 2014-11-25 19:00:25
The current online is available for player vs player and so far very few bugs already! Ill challenge you guys sometime.
