Once upon a time... a boy stumbled into a Games Workshop store and - despite the fact he was originally looking for computer games - left with a Warhammer fantasy blister (If I remember correctly it was an Acolyte of the Light Order). One thing lead to the other. The boy played 40K 2nd edition, 'grew up' to play the 'much more complex' Warhammer Fantasy Battles, thought for some time a small skirmish like Necromunda would fit his needs, but found his true favorite even before: Blood Bowl 3rd Edition!

All that could proof I am an old Blood Bowl veteran. But really I am not. After some years in the late 1990s with a much higher share of hobbying than actual playing Blood Bowl (the times are long gone, but I think it wasn't more that 20 games then), the game and the whole hobby sank into oblivion.

Untill 2023 when 'The Bonehead Podcast' appeared on my youtube starting page and introduced me to Blood Bowl 7s. My favorite Tabletop in less than an hour! That sounded like a perfect match... unfortunatly I needed to learn that playing a table top game - even if it is only a sevens match - does not fit into my personal circumstances. And here FUMBBL enters the stage: Finding opponents at almost every time of the day or night, no travel time, the client supporting fast and convenient games... Perfect! So that is why I am here since December 2023 and try to master the game.

I like playing Elf teams, especially Elven Union but also Skaven and Necromantic Horror. And for the fun of it Snotlings and Goblins or when really in a bad mood Underworld.

While I am not really interested in my coach standing or anything alike I want to improve in the game and learn. Which does not mean that games should not be relaxed and fun. The ideal game - even if I lose it - would be against a nice opposing coach, with some glorious actions, much movement and some puzzles on the pitch. Maybe that is the reason why I do not like playing (against) Dorfs.

See you at the sideline!

Annual Review 2024

Why
Inspired by Razmus' annual review I will pick up the idea and try to write a (short) summary of my first year with Blood Bowl 2020 and Fumbbl. Not really to be a benefit for any other party, but more for me to start keeping a track record from the very beginning. So you may consider to stop reading here. ;-)

When
Even if I already joined Fumbbl on December 9th 2023 and this summary is the 'Annual Review 2024' I will include these 22 days of 2023 and all given numbers will reflect the situation as of December 8th 2024. I played my first ever match on Fumbbl only on February 29th 2024. So, it would be somehow legit to celebrate my anniversary end of February instead of December 9th. But I will stick to the date because it is close to the year's end and beginning of December is mostly a calm time of the year and I may have time to reflect.

Beginning
What happened during the first three month after the registration will remain a mystery in history, but the first three month of my active journey I concentrated on only three teams: Necromantic Horror - because of the models, Orc - because everybody said it would be the most beginner-friendly roster, and Skaven - because I liked the way they act on the pitch. It was only on May 31st that I played my first match with an Elf roster... and got a bad beating.

Time went by. I played matches in [C] Division and the 145 club. I tried my first Blackbox games... and got some more bad beatings. For some unknown reason I never joined the 145 league sprints or KO cups, but enjoyed the hospitality and help of the group a lot. This was also the reason to join Discord on March 25th.

145 Graduate
On June 16th I received a PM on Fumbbl which caught me by suprise, declaring I am a '145 graduate' now. While I did not really know what that meant for me, I honestly was a bit disappointed to not be able playing my beloved 145 teams anymore. But things changed significantly when the first 145 Graduate league kicked off beginning of September. Again a youtube channel - MisspelledTree - inspired me to try out an Elven Union team during that sprint. And what can I say the St. Albani's Sparrows did great and won the eight game sprint with a record of 7/1/0. But it was even more important to have the opportunity to learn a lot more about Blood Bowl, Fumbbl and even myself.

Year-End Challenge
After that experience I tried to set myself some challenges for the upcoming two month till the end of the year. These included the successful participation in the Graduate KO Cup, trying out the Royal Rookie Rumble and BRAWLS tournaments as well as further dive into the 'Elfbowl' experience by playing all four BB2020 elf rosters during the next Graduate league sprint ('No Whining') while also try to complete the Kondor Kluster of the E.L.F. II metagroup.

Unfortunately the first Graduate KO Cup and a participation in the RRR 620 did not go that well. While I expected something like that in the RRR, I was disappointed to be eliminated in round one of the graduate cup. Even if it was against a very nice and competent opponent.

With time I learned that the 145 Graduate league is not the right place to head for the Kondor Kluster. The number of teams is just too low to get all needed rosters in. So I postponed this challenge and focused on only one team to do the complete E.L.F. cycle. Another thing I learned during this period is to focus on quality instead of quantity when setting targets. Challenges that need many games to be achieved may cause conflicts in RL.

As of now I completed the No Whining Sprint with three of four Elf rosters and got a 'complete cycle' with my Dark Elf team, but I only need one more game until December 14th to finish the sprint with the fourth team as well.

145 Post-Graduate (update Dec 14th)
I managed to develop my first player ever to 'Legend' status. Barazet 'Blitz' Barph scored 17 touchdowns, inflicted 10 casualties and was voted twice for the MVP in 28 games for the Elven Union. Barazet only missed two of 30 games the team played during her active career. Unfortunately the team was not able to afford such a legend and needed to fire her during a re-draft.

Considering the special character of a league that uses sprints (free choice of games etc.) and the learning spirit of the 145 group the following top 5 table of the 'No Whining' Graduate league should not be taken too serious... but as an elf coach I am very pleased to see five elf teams there.

After two pretty solid sprint seasons in the 145 Graduate league I was promoted to 'post-graduate', which basically means that I am send out in the 'big, mean world' to play in [C] division, but still can use the great resources of the 145 community (e.g. match-reviews, etc.). Thanks for the honor... even if I still believe I suck in this game and I guess I will prove it, when playing more Blackbox games. ;-)

Better Living
It was during the Graduate league sprint as well when I digged deeper into BBcode. While my team bio pages included some background before, it was 'The Union' and later the 'St. Albanie's Sparrows' pages that really got me working with BBcode. And again it was an amazing experience to witness a community sharing knowledge so open and offering helping hands everywhere! In that spirit I wanted to give something in return. So set up and shared a framework for a team bio page which looks good in the new and the legacy design.

Another little project in my year-end challenge was the establishment of a league. While the E.L.F. group wants to incentivice elf coaches to play different, mostly non-elf, rosters my idea was to create a league especially for all the elf rosters and play some Elfbowl. As a little add-on I created a team which should only be available to play in the Elven Kingdoms league.

I enjoyed the work on those projects as a little distraction from pure play and it also was of practical use since it involved some chatGPT prompt design for AI generated graphics. Unfortunately the participation for the league is very low so far.

Major Learnings
I guess there are many things I learned during the last year related to the rules and mechanisms of Blood Bowl. But even if this 'little children's game' is more complex in itself than people might think, the real learnings I took from this year are a bit more general. I know I need and I want to improve in all mentioned areas further more, but I guess I took the first steps, which is even more important due to the fact that those general learning can be applied to many situations outside of Blood Bowl as well.

- do not get attached (to pixels) too much
Even if it took you some effort to develop a team, you should never get to attached to a team or a certain player. I had my worst experience during one game where I lost some players to fouls and conceded without thinking because I got so annoyed. At the end I needed to retire the whole team because the rest of the stars - those that Had not been stat. decreased from fouls - left the team because of my concession.

- do not blame dice, look for your mistakes
Seems to be an obvious advice, but I still struggle with it. Sometimes I need to watch a match some days later to see what could have been done better. Be it the order of activations, the positioning during prior turns or just better preparing for a dice roll to fail.

- be a good loser and try not to get tilted
I know I have difficulties to accept injustice. Which is no a problem on its own, but getting upset because of imbalanced dice and losing one's focus is.

Numbers
After all the explanation these are the plain numbers as of December 8th 2024, exactly one year after my registration and 283 days after my first match on Fumbbl.

Special thanks
So, you read up to here and endured my rambling but I want use the opportunity to thank the whole community again. Being new to Blood Bowl and Fummbl is somehow overwhelming in the beginning but you made the entry as easy as possible. Patient opponents, guiding advisors, helping hands and just nice people to play a relaxing game with.

A Special thanks to the 145 group and especially the admin team who spend so much of their time to provide a home for the Fummbl newcomers.

And thank you to LIK who was the main reason I was able to play so many games in the 145 Graduate league sprints... and who is basically just a nice guy I like playing with.
