Dark Elf Runner Experiment - Game 1
I love the Dark Elf Runner (in theory). I want to make him work. So I made a team just for that purpose https://fumbbl.com/p/team?team_id=814516 I'm going to try and blog every game focusing on how the runner did.

Game 1 https://fumbbl.com/p/match?op=view&id=3723326

An early failed pickup left the ball open and the Dark Elves swooped in for the score. The Humans hurried counter drive failed and the Dark Elves went up 2-0 at the half. During that time, armor turned to paper and I was 3 men down to start half 2. A nice Dump Off allowed for the 2nd score. So far, so good.

Half 2 the number really showed as a 2nd Lineman was killed. The Runner completed another Dump Off to try and preserve the drive but left the pitch after. The Limeman who caught it was promptly dropped and the humans scored. Perfect D changed my plans to put it away and I tried to force a drive rather than stall. Another turnover and the Humans tied it turn 16. My armor was terrible all game and I made plenty of mistakes. My opponent capitalized on them and had better rolling to force the draw.

Runner ends up with 2 completions. Blitzer gets mvp and rolls 5,5. I took Mighty Blow.

I can tell you how this is going to end: Badly and with lots of dead Runners and lost games.

Dump-off is a utility skill, and a rather poor one at that.

The fist Dump-Off you made that game was a 5+ the 2nd one was a 7+. Those are usually the odds you're looking at with that skill (without NoS). And then you still have the chance of the 1 in 6 fumble.

And this is why the skill goes from ok to bad (for me at least). You have to choose to use it before you see the block dice. So you could fumble the ball for a push result (or have it intercepted!), losing you the ball surrounded by opponents.

The odds are you'll just throw the ball away. Granted, on a rookie Runner that's not a horrible trade off. But once he has blodge the risks are harder to justify (a lot of the time, depending on the situation, I just pressed No when given the option).

There are around 40 odd skills I'd pick before I'd even consider Dump-Off as a possibility. But seeing as the Runners come with the skill;
By all means use the Runner, but keep him safe and cage him like every other ball carrier.

Oh and ignore everything I just said and go out there and have fun! :D

I don't see the issue. The runners are good pieces. You just don't expose them, obviously. And you don't dump off needlessly.

Low TV and the runner can probably hold up relatively well.

As you go up, and face more MB, the AV7 does become an issue. So while he may net you a couple positional advantages now and then with dumpers he will also spend a fair amount of time in the KO box or worse.

I look forward to your reports though. The key thing to keep in mind should be how would your drive have been different if you used a blitzer (or even a line man) to handle the ball instead. GW gave DE 4 blitzers, you don't really need all 4 of them to actually be blitzers, that makes it easy to use one as your ball handler (dodge and then sure hands, or better an early stat and then dodge and sure hands).

What does the runner do on defense anyway? You have to kind of protect them (eventually) whereas with linemen you don't worry about it.

Hm, having a piece like that merits investing some accomodating skills. I think DO is actually pretty good. It just needs a ton of skills to work well. So I'd say there certainly is potential to get more out of the piece if you don't go the usual path with protection skills.

That's the problem though.

Unless you just pick soft teams all the time spending 2 skill slots on NoS and Pass means you're that much bigger of a target, and that much easier to remove.

I'd only think of this as an issue if I'm short on money.

DO is not a pretty good skill.

Would the Runner be a more credible pick if he came with Nerves?

What's with the low rating?

Says take NoS first! :o
I'm all for fun but if you want to play somewhat competitive (and probably even if you don't) you'll have to pick dodge/block before getting fancy with NoS etc.
