How to enjoy Fumbbl and not be stressed out
About two years ago, I was playing on Fumbbl but I was often stressed out and frustrated. This was mainly owed to the fact that I wasn't playing very well, but also to some other routines that factored in. At one point I was often in a sour mood after playing a game or participating in forums and blogs. My wife said stop it, I'm not having it. Either you get a hold on yourself or you quit that site. And she was right. What good is a hobby if it only annoys you? So I imposed a few simple rules on myself, and refined them as I went along. I thought I might share them, in case someone finds them useful.

* Don't play when it's not really convenient. Keep your number of tournaments and leagues at a level that scheduling doesn't become a stress factor.

* Practice your Zen. Make a conscious effort not to get annoyed at bad dice or crippled pixels.

* Read the forums and blogs, but don't believe everything. Learn who to listen to and who not. Participate and be fun.

* If you have time to spare but not really enough to play a full match, find a good match to spec instead.

* Improve your coaching. Watch your own replays and analyse your mistakes. Focus on a few races at a time. Put good coaches for those races in your friend list and spec their games. Identify your weaknesses and work on them one at a time.

* Create your teams with some fluff or at least a motto. Give them at least a minimum of a bio. I underestimated this at first. It really makes me enjoy the site much more.

* Set yourself achievable goals. For example, I recently won my first official tourney, even if it was only a SMACK.

* Try to get along with the other coaches. Be friendly. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Watch yourself and don't do the things that annoy you in other coaches.

* If you feel that you are letting it slip and find it hard to stick by these rules, take a break from Fumbbl entirely.

* Play Blood Bowl on table top every once in a while.

One thing I have noticed, is how chilled out everyone seems to be after an enforced break, due to Fumbbl hardware.

When people are in normal mode, they often try to get over a bad game by playing another, and if that one is a bad, they go into mini-meltdown.

However, after a few days when the site is not available, everyone is back to happy mode, where they are just thankful they can play the game, regardless of result.

Maybe Christer should just turn the site off for 2 days every few months, to reset everyone's Zen!

Good advice here.

The one thing I would add is try not play when tired. Atleast with me I play worse and am more irritable which cause me to play even worse and etc.

Yes tiredeness and tilting trying to get over losses are both killers.

I've experienced the exact same thing and come to the same conclusions.
I mainly play League matches because my previous game-grinding in ranked and box was just not fun. I play a lot less now and have more fun, everybody should take this advice.

Chill out? CHILL OUT!? FU! FU ALL!

I think playing when you want to play is the big thing. Playing because you need to never ends well. Overdosing on scheduled games is a killer.

They are all important but for me personally, the biggest thing I think was improving my coaching. Of course, that does not apply to those who already are accomplished coaches. ;-) But nothing makes me more furious than myself making stupid mistakes.

Another one is to understand the limitations of the teams your coaching. Right now Im in the middle of my worst stretch on fumbbl. It started to bother me but then I thought about the games Ive been playing and they have mostly been Goblin, Vampires, and 3 Big Guy Pact so of course I am going to see worse results.

Basically sometimes you have to be realistic about these things.

Hehe yeah, my father used to say that. ;)

Personally I have focussed on tier 1 races as long as I was working on goals such as improving my coaching or winning my first tourney, as I have found that more rewarding (with some Human and Underworld exploits thrown in). But that's a matter of preference.

I'm not on your friends list of good coaches to watch...wahhhh!!

~Must be because I let your silly War Dancer have too much fun against my Orcs =P

Oh yeah..Good Blog dude!

for me it works quite a few of the rules you all mention.

1. I try to play when i feel like having a game. If it is too late and i feel tired i do not play.
2. If i have not enough time for a full game, i spec or i start doing my little things in the forums/team bios (update TOP25 rankings etc..)
3. If in a middle of a game i feel like i am getting frustrated (bad dices...) i just go to the fridge get a beer and keep playing, but in a better mood.
4. Actually, when getting bad dices (or having the perception of being diced) i say to myself, ok, nuffle wants to make things difficult, right? so let's give it an extra fight to prove him wrong. You nuffle can't beat me! (normally he does though, but i have found out that, at least, i enjoy the rest of the game)
5. Keep number of tournaments and Leagues to a reasonable level. This is crucial to prevent getting stressed out. As a rule for me, 2 leagues if they go with round robin formats. Add an extra league if it is based on KO format.
And run 2 tournaments per week. If i win a round, following week i just apply to 1 tournament.
Depending on deadlines, this means that i commit to 2 to 4 games per week adding tournaments and leagues. The target is to commit to 2-3 games per week, no more.

That's some great advice Verminardo!

I would add just one that has worked for me:

Play tier 3 races too, helps you 'learn' to enjoy and to lose ;)
Posted by Verminardo on 2014-08-07 19:46:48
Hm, maybe I should try that some time. :-)

Good advice!

I went with building a novelty zombie team to play when stressed. Problem is they're so fun I hardly play anything else now :D

I never ever get stressed over scores/dice etc anymore though. Win or lose I get more when the chat is good and funny things happen.

Great post.

Reminders of this kind are a good thing once in awhile.

Tier 3 teams are sometimes a great way to de-stress. What I do is I make a team based on Fluff-Ness. For example my Box Gobs, I wrote a rap/ poem for each game report. It got to a point where I had more fun with the end write up than with the game. So losing wasnt a big deal because it was expected.
I've been pondering an all Zombie Table Top team. Seems it would be more fun playing silly than trying to play seriously. May be a good meta group in Box.

Playing poker online forced me to gain control of my emotions, and now that applies to gaming and just in general life. I've never been too bothered by blood bowl results but when players would try to cheat I would completely lose my temper and cost me a ban or two.
