And nothing stolen.
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-24 23:23:59
they were two of the best European games I have ever watched. It was so great to see Spains boring tippy tappy football get exposed in such an emphatic way.
It was also great to see 2 referees that didn't fall for all the diving and rolling around that Barca and Real Madrid usually get away with.
Football won this time.

I know that these results will be surrounded with the usual hyperbole that comes with the modern world; but all of this sea change in footballing power guff in the press after last night's game was just woeful.
Barca (and I find them dullish, myself, whilst appreciating how good they are / were) are not what they were, had kids in at centre back, an injured Messi and two pretty ropey reffing calls go against them (about time). Bayern have been excellent for a couple of years. It's not some seisemic shift because of one game; much in the same way the EPL isn't suddenly pap because of one year's results.
I suppose my putting football about 74th on the list of sports worthy of my time doesn't help me go over the top on Champions League results. :)

Enjoyed the Dortmund game more but two very impressive results. :O

I like how the player that scored four goals for "Germany" is a Polish National :)

Robert Lewandowski to the Germans:
"Make me a beer for my family and quite find an Italian womens to sleep with me and I will help you win this game of football that you're so in love. I will even let you countrymen be proud like they did it themselves."

yeah spot on purplegoo.
Sky and the tabloids are sooooooo sensationalistic its just ridiculous.
If City win the champions league next year we will get the same seismic shift babble about how english football is reigning supreme yada yada yada.

BBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOO GGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Purplegoo's reply's only surprise was how it did not turn into an epistle on the merits of Buggerby Union :-)
I did not get to see the games but I will say this. I half expected Bayern to win because they are impressive, though Dortmund shocked me.
Barcelona is still a top team, and will continue to be semi-finalists and winners in the future. All that has happened is that German football has made a step up over the past couple of years by sensibly building on strong teams with one or two youngsters or marquee signings but retaining a team ethos unlike Man City and Chelsea who both struggled at this level for years because of their disjointed individualistic approach to squad development.
What is really intersting is (picking up on Garion's comments) I thought that at teh 2010 World Cup germany were teh best team not Spain. Whilst Spain were technically superb and managed to work so well keeping clean sheets and winning games...it was Gemrmany that took your breath away. The pace at which they played the game and the equally impressive technical skills were thrilling. As an England fan (who lost 4-1 to this team) I was in awe of them all through the tournament. They did what football teams are paid to do.... ENTERTAIN!
Posted by Russo on 2013-04-25 12:20:57
I will also add that whislt CHelsea won the Champions League last year theyw ere not even the best team in England never mind in Europe. Their abysmal showing in the World Club Championship demonstrated that.
I watched last years final and Bayern were completely in control of that game against Chelsea, it was a mismatch only rivaled by the 1989?? final where Steaua Bucharest beat Barcelona on penalties after getting through the whole tourny on the back of 0-0 draws.
I recall Bayern having something like 25 shots to 1 and 16-0 on corners it was that bad. Don't get me wrong sterling defensive work is a great skill to see in action, but Chelsea were NEVER Champions of Europe in MY book....

" It was also great to see 2 referees that didn't fall for all the diving and rolling around that Barca and Real Madrid usually get away with. "
I've only seen the Bayer-barca match, I can not talk about the other semifinal. But Bayer's game the referee did not point out three penalties in favor of Bayer, and 3 goals from Bayer are illegal. The Bayer would have won anyway, and by the same score, but be happy because a too bad referee arbitrate the match .......
Posted by Winni on 2013-04-25 13:23:31
Unfortunately, the german head coach is a dork and we will never win anything as long as he stays in charge. To not win anything with the incredible players we have atm is quite an accomplishment too.
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-25 13:52:21
Jundru - I watched that game and I can only assume you are a Barca fan.
There were no penalties that Barca should have had. Not 1.
Out of the goals one was definitely a foul. The one that was supposedly off side was border line. I thought it was offside the first time I saw it too, but after numerous replays Xavi on the opposite side of the box looked like he was keeping him on side anyway and when they are that tight the rules say the advantage should be given to the striker.
The other goals looked fine to me.
But its all moot anyway as Munich completely out played barca and I think they will beat Barca in the next leg too. tbh.
Posted by Reisender on 2013-04-25 14:06:14
referees - the RNGs of football.
and it´s Bayern - Bayer is Leverkusen which unfortunatelxy are not in the Champion´s League this year.
Posted by GAZZATROT on 2013-04-25 14:22:01
I think it would be prudent to wait until we see the 2nd legs played in Spain.
I'm not suggesting that either of the Spanish teams can turn around the tie and reach the final, but I do expect both Spanish teams to win their home legs and in turn reduce said deficit and only then can the "shift" be evaluated properly.
Mentally forgetting what has happened the last 2 days... Is it plausible that Barcelona and Real could win 3-0 and 2-0 respectively? I believe yes in which case the tie is decided by a solitary goal both times. Unless Bayern and Dortmund achieve draws (or better) in Spain I don't buy into this "Seismic shift" just yet.
I think at least one of the German teams are still in for a moment or two of concern.
Posted by the.tok on 2013-04-25 14:56:21
Bayern are a fantastic team right now. It is only justice if they win CL this year, they've been robbed too many times
Posted by dode74 on 2013-04-25 15:11:36
@ garion - jundru didn't say that Barca should have had penalties, but that Bayern should have. His point (whether I agree with it is a different matter) was that he thought 3 of the goals should have been disallowed but that Bayern should have had 3 penalties anyway, so the score would have been the same.
Posted by Reisender on 2013-04-25 15:16:51
every year they call for that seismic shift. It´s 2 German teams being good atm - Bayern has been a European top team for ages (with a very good team at the moment and the financial background to stay top) and dortmund is getting back into European top class where they have been in the 90s (after fighting financial trouble for a decade). A look at the Bundesliga standings and the poor performance in the Euroleague by German teams shows imo: there are 2 good teams - and after that nothing on European level
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-25 16:02:03
hmm i don't think munich should have had any penalties either.
Posted by jundru on 2013-04-25 16:23:12
Yup, that i want to say is the referer make big mistakes, i think was 3 players of barca making 3 penalties, because they tocuh the ball with his arms, and they dont have the armns close to his body.
And ofc, i think that 2 or 3 of the Bayer goals was ilegal, 2 is in offside, and the other 2 have a foul before the goal.
Anyway, Bayer outplayed barca, could be more than 4-0.
My point is, Garion, you say that the referees make a good job, and i think, at least in Bayer-Barca game, the refereer was really bad.
And ofc, im a braca fan, and i think be can go to the final...i can dream :P
P.D. Soory for me bad english.
Posted by Reisender on 2013-04-25 16:44:33
@jundru: again, it is Bayern, not Bayer. 2 different clubs (dont worry about your English, but THIS should be correct)
BayerN Munich: The ClawPombers of the Bundesliga, ugly but good, came to wealth by selling rotten sausages to rotten restaurants and storing that money in Swiss bank accounts
Bayer Leverkusen: chemical mutants nobody likes, but happens to be my favourite club
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-25 16:54:38
hmmm i dunno, neither of the hand balls looked deliberate. But I have seen them given sometimes, and other times they get ignored.
I wasn't commenting on the overall performance of the refs, I was just saying they didn't fall for the usual theatrics that Barca and Real are famous for out side of spain.
Posted by pythrr on 2013-04-25 18:41:43
why is no one laffing at my German Cheating ConSpiroCy joke?
Posted by NoCoolNickLeft on 2013-04-26 01:18:57
Does not matter if it is deliberate. If your hand is in a unnatural position and the ball touches it, there is penalty. In 3 occasions, Barca players touched the ball with their hands where the ref have an excuse to blow the whistle, a lot of experts have already said this, German, Spanish, English etc. Bayern, with the penalties given, could easy have won 5-6-7 vs 0. They were just that much better. But imho, Dortmunds victory was more admirable. Weaker team (than Bayern) vs just a strong side (as Barca).
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-26 16:25:37
It does matter if it is deliberate, this is the official wording of the hand ball rule. Most people, pudits included, just dont understand it. I think the ref was right -
'handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm'
Deliberate is the all important word here.
Posted by Garion on 2013-04-26 16:33:19
more quotes from the fifa handbook -
freekicks -
'handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)'
Sending offs -
'denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within
his own penalty area)'
'Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
infringement
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.)
counts as an infringement
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an
infringement'
personally I don't think there was a handball. But as i said they do get given, and often, just incorrectly a lot of the time. as refs are useless....
:P
