PM your opponents, talk to the admin.

Oh and read this: https://www.fumbbl.com/p/help?op=rules

You'll need to contact the admins about this. It's normally better to keep things in the private domain rather than naming and shaming people (because we can just check your teams to find out who you mean). Without fail, the admins have been quick and helpful to sort out gnarly situations for me on the rare occasions they crop up.
It's a jungle out there.

You are not allowed to use the timeout on someone who has told you they are not at the keyboard like that.
Posted by Arktoris on 2015-10-31 17:02:26
another reason why the timeout button should be used to override a turnover, not enforce one.

Report all mens!
Posted by doomspider on 2015-10-31 17:11:14
ok - thx everyone. I didn't hit the timeout straight away but I waited about 15 minutes so I guess that's ok!? That's not 'brb' in my opinion. I can't hang out in front of the screen all day. I'll write admin and see if they'll solve it for me.
Posted by doomspider on 2015-10-31 17:20:49
oh, I did PM my opponent and he didn't respond.
Posted by Kryten on 2015-10-31 17:29:39
No, it's not okay. I'm one of the Security Officers. If your opponent is gone 15 minutes, then he's disconnected. Close the game and follow the procedure in that case:
https://fumbbl.com/help:DisconnectionProblems
The Time Out button is for times your opponent is present, making his moves, but not finishing in his allotted four minutes. It is not for times when he is AFK, mysteriously not moving, disconnected, or his cat is on fire.
Posted by Antithesisoftime on 2015-10-31 18:21:25
I've only once timed out an AFK opponent, and that was because he'd never warned me of his AFK, and I gave him 10 minutes beyond the 4 minute limit. I Finished my next turn, and waited another 7 before he finally showed back up, and boy was he pissed that I had had the nerve to time him out once (after his no warning AFK)
That coach proceeded to rage quit the game, and I don't think I've seen him back on fumbbl since.

Antithesisoftime - That time out was illegal as unresponsive coaches are treated as though they were disconnected. So you were in the wrong there and he had every right to be pissed off.

You are going to get destroyed on this and probably get a sanction from the Admin. You should never use the Timeout button...oh wait then why is it there you ask? Don't ask questions, know your role!!! Never timeout all mens!!
Posted by pythrr on 2015-10-31 20:32:01
"You should never use the Timeout button"
What? Have you even read the above?
Posted by UngratefulDead on 2015-10-31 21:14:20
As a new-ish player, I really don't think the timeout button would exist. I would never have understood proper usage if it hadn't luckily been explained to me (as "err on the side of never using it ever") in one of my first games. I'm sure it is in the rules, but there are really kind of a lot of rules to keep straight.

^^
"err on the side of never using it ever"
What kind of hippy crap is that? As long as a coach is there and playing for 4 minutes, you are entirely entitled to TO on 4.01.
Posted by licker on 2015-10-31 23:15:58
This is just one of those FUMBBL things that 'doesn't make sense' until after it makes sense.
Many of us have learned this as new players after timing someone out 'illegally'. The Admins will explain it to you, and should you only do it the one time, then there should be no concerns.
The rule is easy enough, if a player is simply not there, you cannot time them out. You can wait a bit, close the client, contact your opponent, and eventually contact an admin if your opponent does not reply or you cannot find a time to finish the match.
It is somewhat annoying that your team will be locked for this period of time, but on the flip side, it's a good excuse to just try some other team.

Pythrr is really a mellow old sod these days, huh? I approve!

I guess I don't see how you can have 4 teams locked in "people-leaving-the-game" limbo. I don't think it has happened to me 10 times in all the years I have played.
Posted by ImpactedAnimal on 2015-11-02 12:48:58
I remember having this happen to me a number of times but it was particularly when i had first joined the community - could there be a few unethical players (aka really sad people) abusing newcomers?
Also I dont tend to time people out but if each of their turns is taking over 4 mins I will warn them that after 3 turns of this i consider it fair game to time them out - but this is for actual games being played and not afk...
Is this reasonable or am i a git? ;)

It's allowed to timeout the first time someone plays (not afk's) for 4 mins. Its reasonable to give fair warning once; either beforehand, or upon the first transgression.
