One thing we could do without
Hi All,

Sorry to post about something unpleasant, but I thought it might be worthwhile discussing and hopefully doing away with. What I am referring to an ugly and unnecessary term that I’ve been confronted with once or twice: ‘dicerape’.

Personally, I don’t think it’s appropriate language for a community-oriented, family friendly site like fumbbl. Blood Bowl is silly fun. It’s a pastiche full of cartoon-style violence where the hits are actually represented with a POW! similar to a Looney Tunes or 1960s Batman.

Rape however is always serious and never fun. It’s among the most traumatising and dehumanising experiences a person can suffer. It is not appropriate to invoke in a friendly game against an opponent you probably don’t even know in a real life, and about whom likely know little to nothing of their life experiences.

As well as still being prevalent in societies throughout the world, sadly sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war in current conflicts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Under these awful real world circumstances, it is impossible to know how anyone in this community or their loved ones might have been affected.

I have challenged opponents who have used this nasty term during play, but without going into any level of detail like this post. I have simply said Blood Bowl is silly fun, rape is not, can we please find less loaded language. This usually been fine. But sometimes people can be offended at being called out. This is also understandable as there was no literal intention behind the phrase, but then you've faced with acrimony between fumbblers over this horrible, unecessary language.

So when in doubt, why not just leave it out? Blood Bowl coaches are a bright, creative cohort. We can definitely find better, less nasty and more fun ways to express ourselves. The dice represent your team’s performance under pressure. As a hovering 50%-win rate, hit and miss coach myself, I find that sometime I let my players down with bad calls that get them in trouble, and sometimes they let me down by blowing well thought plays that shouldn’t have been hard to execute. This can be frustrating, but at least dumping on the players can be part of the fun in a way that ranting about dice or insulting opponent coach is not.

I am sorry for a serious and sort of moralising post. I think it’s my first and I hope it’ll be my last. To be clear, I am not calling for formal censorship or enforcement, or for anyone to be shamed, reprimanded, banned, cancelled, or anything else. I am just saying let’s keep things friendly, and if we sometimes find that tough, at least let’s always keep them in perspective.

Really valuable post. I've often found that because FUMBBL is a multicultural and multilingual place, there are terms that are more and less offensive in different cultures, and people in good faith don't realise how offensive certain terms are. I've challenged people on offensive terms (though not this one) and been challenged on offensive terms, and in my experience everyone has always taken the challenge really well, so I'd want to encourage people to explain to their opponents that things are offensive and ask them to stop, because you will probably get a good response that will improve the time you have - and if someone asks you to stop using a particular term, don't be a dick and stop.

Diced is good. Probably not offensive to most people. Usually just means bad luck with dice but the more violently inclined of us can also think of the team being cut into pieces.
I agree the expression you mention is inappropriate.

Well said, Rags. If coaches do feel there's any language that you're uncomfortable with, you can let the admin team know and we can speak to the coaches involved (without presuming wrongdoing) to make clear what we consider to be acceptable.

Kickass post! I assume kickass is fine right?

Fortunately never heard that term before, but I totally agree with you, it shouldn’t be used. Thanks for your post.

I’ve gotten into discussions about that with opponents too, so couldn’t agree more. It actually seems to me that it’s less frequently used than a few years ago, but it would be great if it would never be used at all anymore.

Totally agree! Remember this discussion from way back 2006 or so.
It has been getting better, but isn't quite there yet.

One could insert "the winnie the pooh going from malformed into a gentleteddy" meme here from the forums.
But well said, people should be able to represent their feelings and frustration in less vulgar ways and still feel the satisfaction of letting it out. I don't say its easy, but something that worth working towards to IMO.

It is great to see so many positive responses to this excellent post. The last time this was raised people seemed much more annoyed at being asked to not say something. When the cost of not saying this phrase is so low it seems like there is no reason to not raise that it is unpleasant.

I have more faith in (FUMBBL) humanity than I did before!

I agree, well written.

Hi.

I understand your point, but maybe, and Fumbbl is a worldwide platform, it is a matter of translation. Maybe using Rape in english is hard, but in any other language has a different use.

Nevertheless, I understand what you are saying and in this platform I´m learning to be very cautious with the things I say in order to avoid misunderstandings.
Posted by datom on 2024-04-19 19:59:27
Absolutely, and these things can be complicated.

That said, "rape" is a verb with a clear meaning in English. So if you're going to use the word, you should know what it means.

A good rule of thumb is - would you say it your kids, or as a teacher, in front of a class? If not remember you may be
playing someone of that age?
