You can have 1000 reserves but you can't replace players during the drive, that's the issue.
I play with 14 or 15 Elves, but they get removed too fast for the reserves to matter.
This is why I stopped defending with Elves, especially at mid-high TV is futile.

Since when do elves need 11 players on the field to win? Let's just give them the ability to change players who are knocked out or killed and then everyone will play Elves no?
