Homophobia and transphobia are a thing in most societies of the Old World, as are almost all sorts of discrimination targeting individuals and groups who behave or express needs aberrant from heteronormative standards.

This is more than true for the often pretty conservative dwarven race. When a group of Blood Bowl players (m/f/d) in one of the smaller internal leagues openly protested, they got expelled. Disappointed and furious, they travelled the Old World, only to find quite similar phobic prejudice and scorn amongst humans and halflings. Getting in touch with multi-racial underground communities and still being fond of their former occupation, it was only a matter of time until someone came up with the idea to form a new, multi-racial team, united in its mission to pridefully return to the pitch and fight for touchdowns as well as for tolerance and against discrimination. Needless to say, that despite these noble goals, there is still a lot of distrust, quarrel and disagreement among the team - after all little more than a bunch of strugglers, scarred by discrimination.

Whilst the Rainbow Rebels' players all vary from heteronormative standards in one or more aspects, not all of them show it openly, as they agree that no-one should be forced to become even more vulnerable than they already are. Instead, they collectively declared themselves as non-binary. Mockery as well as nosy questions will likely be met with either a profound lecture or a fist in the face - or both.

When the original dwarf players left their caverns and tunnels with little hope to return, in their darkest hour, the first thing they spotted on the surface was a majestic rainbow. They took it as a sign of hope that not all was lost. Hence, when the new Bloodbowl team was founded, it became part of the team name.
