So you want to be a Slobberknocker?

The Sons of Brutus have just completed their 6th Human League Premiership Sprint. They had been absent from the Premiership last season, after the SOB went through a stretch of games I like to call the Sobbing. Until their first win this season it had been 80 games since their last Premiership level win. At Premiership level there had been 8 losses, and 72 games below 1600.

At the lowest they were 1100 TV (200k of which were Journeymen), and also got down to FF4 around this time. Some of the reasons behind the Sobbing include the simple nature of the box, a voluntary trim down to qualify for a TV1290 Minor, my somewhat average coaching ability, and probably most importantly - I was on tilt. I seriously considered retiring the team, and doubted that I'd get back to Premiership level with them. A losing mind set leads to losses.

I played a few games on easy mode (skaven), played more Stunty, got involved in some Leagues, and found more enjoyment from Fumbbl, getting relief from the worst parts of R&B. Encouragement from others helped gain perspective, allowing me to rediscover the Sons as a team with potential, and past the worst of it rather than stuck in a downward spiral. The_Murker's campaign to bring balance to the Box provided some inspiration, and there was enough history with the team for me to persevere.

I started to have fun. I could look at a bad dice game and be delighted that my casualties were only MNG and not permed. I could see that while I couldn't make a dodge or a pickup, at least my armour wasn't breaking. Getting my enjoyment back was key.

Now I know there is a school of thought that you should only worry about your own enjoyment because it's your time online and it's precious. That'd be true if you were playing a computer, but the guy at the other end has a right to enjoy his game as well. In my book, a degree of consideration and respect for others are prerequistes for being a decent human being.

In this game both coaches want to win, and one of the roads to winning is removing the opposing team from the pitch. Maiming and killing is part of the game, but what some seem to forget is that it's not the only part of the game. If you want to be a slobberknocker and play Humans in the box you have to be prepared for brutality at any TV level. You will be constantly rebuilding. Having fluff and taking advantage of the diversity of experience that Fumbbl offers will get you through. Those decent folk who run and play in the HLP will all be cheering for your successes.

Shirtcoptering more your style I hear you say? Well, if you want a proper work out you need to lift above your TV weighting, so you need to play Humans in the Box. You won't get buff rowdy playing easy mode with C-pombination teams - you'll get fat and flabby.

Trust me, you think it's fun to kill a 300SPP+ Nurgle Warrior now? It tastes even sweeter when its a rookie human lineman and his boot.

Be a Slobberknocker, compete in the Human League Premiership - Blackbox on Hard Mode.

Playing against the Sons of Brutus multiple times in a short period with my Necro team (and hurting them!) made me want to play my human team again, and enroll them in Human League Premiership, which has been fun.
Thanks!

So glad to see the Sons back in action. And a great sprint coming together as well. The 4 losses to start the season effectively mean you have four games left to play. You could put up 10, 11, or 12 wins to win the title! I think this could be the Son's season. Good luck with the next 4 games!

And you have once again passed the true test of the Slobberknocker. Hitting rock bottom in all regards, with low TV, low treasury, low motivation, bad dice and evil opponents, and rebounded once again up into Premiership level and winning form. Fine winning form at that. Something OL is very, very good at. It is these severe tests that I feel make the Sprinter awards so important. Regcognition for just finishing.

I fear I am over due for such a test. I hope I can meet it just as well.

I'm not entirely sure the HLP is a healthy endeavor, and I'm totally sure it's not for everyone, but I do enjoy watching you guys suceed and endure.

And it does improve our skills, and make the Box a more diverse place, and help teach one how to lose gracefully, minimize loss, and accept fate. It isn't really up to us in the end how well our team's do at the Premiership level. I feel a very large part of it is simply enduring, and waiting for Nuffle's light to shine on your team one season. (the right dice, the right opponents, combined with solid play and some good star players)

I feel it is the Son's season.

Oh, and "Black Box on Hard Mode." I think that is so fitting.

Like a MUD you might not even be able to win. But to play to enjoy it anyway.

having crushed said sons of brutus in a previous game, ive resolved to play some humans in the box and get them as buff and rowdy as possible. my first game was brutal against rookie marauders
http://fumbbl.com/p/match?op=view&id=3473022
but there was a heroic last stand from 5 dudes for the win, my team however is mangled, should i retire and restart or play on?
ps humans are fast and the bliters are hella rowdy. observation- needs more claw. do your rollovers.

Retiring the SOB?
I'm glad you didn't do it, they are a team destined to legendhood!
Sure, they finished their sixth Sprint, they can win the current HLP, but... I feel their true goal is to be the first human team to play 500 games in the Box!
Go SOB, the Vault Boys are your fans!

I'm hoping for a top three finish but would be stoked with a personal best. There is a lot of time between now and the end, as well as plenty of quality coaches that have solid starts. ClemUSA's Gunners are ones to watch, but there's lots of others to come.

TPC: I'd play it through - better bragging rights after a start like that when the team finally completes a premiership. However if you do start a new team you should call it "Shirtcoptering Hard Mode".

Good blog. Makes me want to ruin my CR again over Humans in teh Box. ;-)

Good blog indeed. I've never coached a human team so far and haven't played box for months, but your blog and The_Murker's reply make me thing if I should give both a try and join HLP.

This was a very inspiring blog. I've started a human team in the box for the current HLP season and have gotten 2 games in so far (1-0-1). The time of night when I can play is very sparse in the box, but I'm going to do my best to complete the sprint. I played the Sons of Brutus ages ago and remember it being a fun game. Glad they are still around. The team I played against them back then is long retired.

Also glad to see others inspired to give HLP a shot.

Slobberknocking sounds like some thing you'd look for on the Craigslist personal ads.
Posted by Dunenzed on 2013-08-15 23:33:21
Both Slobberknocking and perusing Craigslist personal ads creates a need for treatment from a mental health professional.

Inspiring more HLP competition leaves me with equal parts pride and guilt. Sorry and Good Luck!
