I won my 100th game yesterday, I also managed to get back past the 150CR up from the 140s where I had languished for about a year. In fact looking back I think I have won about 70% of my last 100 games.
How you might ask. Well, I entered Fumbbl a bright eyed newbie, with my Bloodbowl experience a couple of dozen games in the early 90's and a few more recent ones against a few friends who had recently got into bloodbowl. I was in for a rude awakening, including having my team wiped off the pitch in a smack and again by Dreadclaw (and my how I whined)
But I set my self some goals and as someone who pursues self made goals relentlessly i had to make a few changes:
I stopped playing my older teams, teams I had played 50 games with (notably my Beedogs) but also the vamps, skaven, rotters, norse and high elves that I had lost with. I started Chaos Dwarves, Lizards, Necros, Undead and most recently Amazons all of whom I have a positive win record with now.
I built teams with rerolls and high fan factor, built to last and farming spp on linemen wherever possible.
I treated every dice roll as a risk, standing people up and doing all movement possible before throwing a single block. I got people downfield all the time waiting for a break. I never thought 3+ with a reroll was guarenteed but expected every roll to fail.
I cherrypicked to some extent, not playing many coaches over 160cr and while I tried to keep a good Tr balance I started to look for opponenets teams that would play to my strengths i.e. looking for less tackle on Amazons. I played less Dwarves and Khemri but more Chaos.
I ran the ball more, no more risky passes no more hoping an opponent won't knock down the ball carrier.
I learned to stall, probably the most hated of my own tactics to improve but no doubt it is effective.
I fouled a lot more, in fact from someone who never fouled in their first 100 games I never left home without at least 1 dp, just to target that claw/rsc or 1 turner.
I specced, especially the FC games and saw so many mistakes I was making repeated over and over again and drove those out of my play.
I learned the value of skills, of stand firm, of dauntless but probably most of all of guard, probably the most powerful skill in the game by some margin.
So here I am, transformed from that newb into the grizzled veteran, who fouls, stalls, picks and crowdpushes.
But I do win a lot more.
