Write a Book!
Better yet, help me do it, because I need the money from it! As I struggle through my ideas both for a meaningful non-fiction book, and my children's novel, I want something stupid and fun to do that I can fall back on when procrastinating.

This will be a dictionary of fantasy cliches for easy reference for fantasy writers. So I need a long list of things typically found in Fantasy novels. See Off-Topic thread to contribute.

The finished product will largely be humourous in nature. Sample entry style (un-finished/edited)

Dragon: A large winged creature, usually intelligent, mostly invulnerable, and magic. Given to collecting treasure. Breaths fire or something that makes less sense. If including dragons in your setting, please try to explain why the hell they haven't conquered everything, and how normal development of human settlement happened with these things around.
Personally, I'd say they only make sense if they are incapable of reproduction, and afraid of dying as a result. Make them magical constructs that never age and are paranoid. Have the treasure collecting be a way to bribe heroes who find them into leaving them be, thus getting them confused with leprechauns (which don't exist).
If, for some reason, you let them take human form do not have them fall in love with a human. Please. Just...... don't.

Ok, It's rough, and you can think it's dumb, but that's not a problem, as long as you contribute to the list!

Thanks in advance,

Mac

Dragon - see Reign of Fire. Hehe.
Posted by Macavity on 2011-04-15 21:24:27
Oh dear lord, did that movie suck! Suspension of disbelief for waking up dragons: No Problem! Humans living in hiding, re-learning farming skills post-apocalypse style? No problem! Folks in same post-apocalyptic world having enough gas to fly helicopters carrying tanks across the Atlantic? PROBLEM!
Posted by Cavetroll on 2011-04-15 21:30:55
It's one of those movies that I can't decide if it is good or bad. Everything you said is true. And yet I really enjoyed the characters. Especially Van Zandt. A bad movie that I would probably be willing to watch again.

BTW, where is the thread?

The Off-Topic thread? It's in Off-Topic.....

Zombie: Originally human, but now a ravaging creature that hungers for flesh. Zombies are either raised by necromancers from graveyards, or created by exposure to a virus, either directly, or through being bitten by an existing zombie. Zombies that are created by Necromancers are traditionally shuffling creatures, which can be recognised by their moaning, torn clothing and multiple injuries to the body. Zombies that are created by viruses can be similar to those raised by necromancers, or they can be of a newer much faster variety. This newer variety is considered more dangerous, and to defeat them requires super human reflexes that can only be easily captured on video using special slow-motion filming.

It is recommended to avoid contact with both types of zombies whenever possible.

Just need the names of the names, thanks! (Not that I might not steal some of your ideas)

I have read many fantasy books about the dragons, it's a magic creature, but can't use spells, is just immune on the most of magic effects.

Btw Macavity, please don't make another Harry Rotter. I think there is too much fantasy books for the kids. It would be hard to write something interesting.
Btw2 I think, today most of popular books it's a dark fantasy, like "Sabriel", "Abhorsen" "Lirael" not something stupid and fun.

For me the best idea is combination real world with fantasy, like "Peter Pan" or "The Brothers Lionheart" or even "Neverending Story".

Mac, Mac, they had a C-130!

Come on.

Watch again.

:)

Not writing a fantasy novel, Spiro, just a dictionary! The kids novel is about a boy in present day who gains the ability to turn invisible without the convenience of his clothes accompanying him. If you are looking for good kid's fantasy try FableHaven or Ranger's Apprentice.

Darker stuff is lending into the dystopian for teens. Hunger Games being the quintessential example.

P.s. I work in a children's bookstore.

also i think this whole thread is cool. books!
Posted by spiro on 2011-04-15 23:22:57
Macavity, you should read all Terry Pratchett's books, about The Disc World, i think it's the best of all now, funny and interesting, not too much violence, great races, dwarfs, trolls, vampires, little people, gnomes, werewolves, witches, dragons, Cohen Barbarian, it's just awesome, and most interesting are the problems there.

Nany Ogg or Grandmother Wetherwax, they are my best.

Last Book with this series what i have read it's "Monstrous Regiment" and it's great. Almost all Pratchett books are interesting.
Posted by Macavity on 2011-04-15 23:27:52
Terry Pratchett is pretty much the best. Do you read them in English? Always wondered how well the jokes translated......
Posted by spiro on 2011-04-15 23:38:43
Nope, i have read it in Polish language, btw, my English is not such good to see how good it's tranlated, but i am sure, that everything is translated very preciselly.

Now i have read Gotrek Gurnisson in English, "Trollslayer" and next will be Sherlock Holmes.

Gotrek roared:
"Send me a champion !!"
For a second there was silence. Condensation from the clammy mist ran down his brow. Then - from far, far off - the sound of galloping horses rang out in the quiet night.

;Good!; Gotrek roared. ;Good!; lol

I read some literature history in school and the best authors were either alcoholics, drug users or insane(deeply depressed falls in this category (been lots of them)). Pick one and go with it.

Or you can copy shit from old bestiariums and make the book you planed to do.
Posted by Grod on 2011-04-15 23:50:06
I see. Off the top of my head to get it started:

Zombie, necromancer, elf, goblin, barbarian, gnome, knight, princess, dwarves, evil witch, fairy, Necromonicon, book of the dead, book of spells, wizards apprentice, spell, cantrip, dark elf, half elf, werewolf, pirate, ninja, assassin, thief, mage, warrior, beserker, warlock, minstrel, lawyer (even fantasy worlds must have them), trade guild, thieves guild, fighters guild, castle, camp fire, flint, lance, scimitar, spear, shield, crossbow, wyvern, manticore, griffon, hydra,

Grod, If you played Heroes of Might and Magic then you forgot about :

troglodytes, harpies, medusas, nagas, efreets, geenes, pegases, unicorns, gargoyles, cyclopes, behemots, rakshasas, angels, gorgons...

Grod, post in the thread, seriously. Keep up!
Posted by Macavity on 2011-04-16 00:27:55
Spiro, it's not a superhero story. He can turn himself invisible. That's it. It's a middle school comedy. I know this audience ;)
Posted by spiro on 2011-04-16 00:43:14
got it, story about a boy who gained invisible ability and spyied naked girls in the bathroom or spy how false people are, nice idea, joking lol, but i understand this. It can be comedy aboud psychological apsects math teacher's life.

I got a few entries for you:

The princess: a mandatory female character usually between ages 15 and 24 who is attractive and must fall in love or lust with main fantasy hero.

The Xena: a female character that may be "the princess" who possesses unrealistic fighting prowess. Able to toss around and knockout 220lbs 6 foot 3 warriors with ease despite being only 105 lbs herself. character is mandatory in modern 20th century era fantasy stories to satisfy political correctness, attract a co-ed audience, and keep guys horny at GenCons.

The werewolf: A doglike creature that always shows up in any story involving vampires. Usually has sharp fangs, changes during the full moon, and asks people to please work out.

the Plot: Something to fill a few pages between thrilling action scenes and fights. always includes the phrase "conquer the world" somewhere in it.
