I can't say I didn't know what I was getting into. The first line of their bio puts it right out there: "WARNING!: BORN TO KILL". But I was having a hard time finding matches for A Well-Read Pestilence - maybe it was that my TV was too high, maybe too many of their peers were still in the UI. I saw plenty of potential matchups in GameFinder, though, and nobody seemed to want to face off. And wasn't I doing some picking as well? I would face off against most people, but I tended to avoid challenging anyone with Piling On (barring on Big Guys) or with multiple Dirty Players. If I was picking, then how could I be annoyed with others who did so?
So, I challenged Angry Newscasters to a game.
It started off well. I got a blitz, and smashed the Newscasters' best skeleton down with a perm. I managed to maintain parity throughout the entire first half, up 1-0, and being kicked to. But early in the second half, blitz-ra Stefano De Grandis XXX Piled On to
John Steinbeck, my Beast, and rolled the RIP, through a failed regen and a failed Igor. The same blitz-ra then ended the game by smashing the ankle of my first ever legend,
Guy Gavriel Kay. A sad day for the Pestilence.
John had 110 games under his belt before this one. He was one of the team's original players, and had been present for every single game they ever played, never before taking so much as an MNG without regenerating. The +ST he rolled on his first skill and the doubles for Block on his third made him an exceptionally dangerous Beast, hard to knock down and hard to get away from. He suffered from moments of distraction, but overall was everything I could have asked for from the team Beast.
Guy was my first legend, and I've written about him
before. While he wasn't with the team for game 1, he was the first pestigor hired after the team began playing, and is also a "plankowner" - the only #10 the team has ever had. The team ball-carrier, he smashed Nurgle records for scoring, retiring with 73 TDs, a dozen more than any other Nurgle player on the site. He was also second across all divisions for rushing, holding down 9th for rushing in Ranked for all races.
While I am sad to see John and Guy leave the team, it does feel somewhat appropriate that they are going at the same time. The team will keep going without them, and while I will miss them, I hope that this will open a door for others to shine brighter in their absence.
