Timing Out - When is it OK?
recently i have returned to Fumbbl after an extended absence and theres this magical button on this new client that appears in your opponents turn after 4 mins that reads "time out"
i have spent all the time i have had in its presence staring at it in wonderment and awe, but never excercised the option to click it, even in a 15 minute turn.
aside from the times i have played a friendly opponent i have regretted not clicking it every time as it would have been devastating.
my question here is - when is it acceptable to time your opp out - if at all and if you've done it id like to hear what kind of backlash you have received. for knowledge and maybe just lolz.

maybe once more educated in its ways i may be able to use it one day.

Maybe less time staring at the button and more time searching the forums.

They take to long twice i warn them 3rd time BAM i press but so far have not had to do it as after the warning they strangely speed up.

Taking several 4-5 mins turns - get's a warning third time.
RL issues - no limit.

Why is this a blog again?

Most of the times there is a reason other than actively losing time for a duration longer than 4 min. Crappy conections are a good reason. When in bussiness travel, it happens a lot... to me at least.

Also, playing with, let´s say, "difficult" races you need more time to stand a chance. Specially at the beginning of the game, while you have 11 players available ;). Later on, CAS rate speeds up the turn.

If your opponent is afk for rl reasons then timeout is illegal.

Timeout is otherwise allowed and opinion on whether it should be enforced is divided. Many coaches think a warning should be given on a first offence and many coaches think timeouts should not be used on new coaches who are learning the rules.

Some good points and one pointless one, thanks all for the feedback. :)

Did someone seriously spend 15 minutes actively playing 1 turn?
Posted by ThePeoplesChamp on 2013-06-06 13:16:11
Sure did! There was a hell of a lot of select/deselect going on.

If your opponent has connection issues or major RL issue, don't timeout.

Otherwise, you're suppose to hit it after 4 min. If you want, just give a warning. I usually do when the clock hit 3:40 with a "20s" comment.

If the player is new and learning, I'm more relaxed about 4 min rule.

Throw some Natty Ice on while you wait for your opponent to play out his extremely long turn.

flings and gobbos are allowed to press it 0.0001 secs after it pops out.

if opponent is not involved in some real life thing. in that case, I prefer to pause when throwing a 2dice block and asked for choice - so that the timer stops.

Fumbbl Axiom:
Never talk about something, just search for a place and time when others talked about it. Review their discussion and do not try and add to it. Or you can just hit reply and complain about ClawPOMB so they'll lock the thread. Then you can start your own.

its ok after 4 minutes (as long as the opponent has not been AFK)

As a recent and hopefully friendly opponent of yours, I would like to add that it sometimes depends on the division or type of game you are playing. E.G. Ranked and/or Box like everyone has already stated, Tournaments I think its generally accepted the time out button is bright red and begging to be pushed, Leagues (including small groups of friends) unlikely to ever be used.

Take care and hope to you again soon. Dalfort

oh gods yes. anyone Timeing out in League must be a complete dick.

Never time anyone out.

I played a very high ranked fumbbler recently, who despite a fairly easy situation was repeatedly taking 4 mins+. When i even mentioned it he became very upset, let alone timing him out.

I was recently timed out, by a noob, preventing a 1-0 td at half time. that was RL emergency and i typed as much. i was back 5 mins later to an ended turn. I decided not to try raising 'ettiquette' as i didnt want to frighten a new guy off, and i HAD taken 4 mins+. It was his right.

Context is everything.

Pretty sure timing out after an opponent announces RL problems is against site rules.
Posted by Rat_Salat on 2013-06-07 19:42:05
I pretty much always hit it unless the opponent isn't actively playing. If he's gone, leave it alone. If he's just slow...

Did have one time when my opponent stated he was going afk, came back 10 minutes later and played a 4+ minute turn. End of the turn he surrounded a superstar gutter runner for the foul. Better believe I hit it.

thanks again all for the further comments and taking the time to share them.
i feel like from all the knowledge youve imparted i have a better idea of when its okay and when its not.
