What next for Fumbbl?
Now a forum topic see http://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=18797

Been a while since i have done a 'bored at work' ramble. Mainly because i am a bit busy, and also still doing the database for box majors. But here is another ramble for you to argue about.

The day the FBB client comes out of Beta comes ever closer, and with it the problem of a fragmented Fumbbl won’t go away. The Beta testing of FBB is already drawing teams away from the other divisions and it is now regularly the 2nd most popular division each day. This is happening despite the fact it is Beta, the teams in it are only playing for fun. There are no trophies on offer, no glory as such, no CR or equivalent… In fact there is the distinct possibility that all the teams will be wiped when it does go gold, so there is a high probability of not even a team history.

So now we must look to the future, and important decisions must be made for the good of Fumbbl and the community as a whole. Is it really viable for there to be both LRB4 and FFB specific sub-divisions within the current system? Do we try it first and then decide based on the results? Or do we take the plunge and commit ourselves to one ruleset? These are questions that most coaches have an opinion on, and normally a very strong one…. For what it is worth here is mine:-

Fumbbl is built on games. More games attract more people, which in turn creates more games. Therefore we cannot split the site any more than it already is. In fact it is often argued that the site needs to be brought back together. Putting the box into ranked is not an option, it would alienate a large and important section of the community. Many coaches in the Box are long serving coaches that benefit the community to have around. Dispersing Ranked is also a non-starter, it goes against the very core of Fumbbl to stop coaches from being able to pick which games they enjoy playing (and this from a coach that hates ranked). So as far as I can see the only option is to embrace one ruleset across the whole site, and that ruleset should be FBB.

This is not because it is my preferred ruleset (actually I couldn’t care less which one I used). Nor is it because it is new and current. We need to switch to FBB because it is the only way to move the site forward. The new client is so much easier to get up and running that a large number of rookie coaches are completely skipping LRB4 in favour of FBB. New coaches that have positive things to say about the site, that then tell their friends and so on. LRB4 is neither easy to get started, nor easy to find the ruleset. No matter what your views are over the best ruleset/client it has to be accepted that LRB4 is dying, and it is taking Fumbbl with it. Newbies don’t know the rules, can’t find the client and then struggle to get it working how they want it to, this scares them away.

When FBB exits Beta LRB4 should be moved to the League division if people want to use it, but it should no longer be supported by the site. Short term it will lead to coaches leaving, but long term it will ensure the survival of the site. After all when coaches abandon the commercial game where will they turn to? It sure as hell won’t be to a site using an outdated ruleset and a client they can’t find.

Personally I’d be happy to see FBB moved into the Box as soon as the admin section is complete. Possibly a step too far but you have read this far might as well keep going. Since a large percentage of the testers seem to be regular box coaches (in my opinion anyway), why not let us really stretch the new client? I bet people are far more willing to report bugs and then check they are fixed if the results actually mattered. The Box is down to 25-35 games per day now, moving the client into the Box would increase both the number of games in the Box and the number of games using the new client.

So this was a personal blog with my personal opinion in it. Feel free to agree or disagree but please keep it civil.

Whilst I agree with many of your thoughts, I also think this would be better as a forum post.

I would eventually like to see 6 divisions;

Ranked (FFB)
Blackbox (FFB)
League (FFB)
League (LRB 4)
Academy (FFB)
Stunty (Unique)

There are some coaches who only wish to play LRB 4, and it is only reasonable to give them a place to do that ... if it's in a second League division, then it also allows leagues the choice between which rule set to use.

Of course, one of the burning questions which has still not been answered is, will any teams be able to move between LRB 4 and FFB and how will it be handled?

Forum topic it is then, but i warn you it will get far more bogged down in div vs div debate like that :)

I have to agree with pretty much everything here. The merits of LRB4 vs LRB6/FFB is an argument that would/will never be settled, and it is ultimately irrelevant to keeping FUMBBL alive and kicking. Coaches may leave in protest at first at being forced to use a ruleset they don't like, but I would wager 90% would come back - after all, in terms of online matches at least, once LRB4 FUMBBL is gone it is basically a case of play LRB6 or don't play at all.

The main attraction of FUMBBL for me is being able to play against as diverse a range of coaches as possible - I would wager this is the case for most people. I can live with whatever gripes I have about one particular ruleset over another. Splitting the site between LRB4 & LRB6/FFB versions of [B] and [R] (Stunty & League are obviously special cases that would need to be dealt with on an individual basis) would dilute the existing player base to what might be a dangerous level, and make it potentially very confusing for newcomers to the site to integrate with the community.

In summary, IMHO LRB4 probably needs to be sacrificed for the good of the site as a whole.

Nice blog!

The new client is obviously the way ahead for the site. As for the detail I don't mind as long as I will still able to participate in player run leagues and participate in a Black Box set up of some kind then I for one will be happy.

Transfering existing teams so that they are compliant with the new rule set/skills will be the interesting part, assuming it happens at all. It would make it much easier for existing leagues if that happened... and teams with history in Ranked, BBox and Stunty will want to preserve their existance too. At the end of the day Christer may choose to listen to all of our thoughts and then make his own decision, and we will simply accept it or leave... I will be staying whatever! :)

LRB5+ sucks.

I'll comment here, cause I can't stand forums... :P

I like your blog, you get the main points across and I agree with them. To me, I was surprised even when I joined the site two years ago, that fumbbl still used lrb4. By that time I had already been playing lrb5 table top for a while and I personally think there is no question that 5 (or 6 or whatever it is now can't really keep track) is better than 4. The simple fact that the whole game doesn't evolve around fouling is reason enough to support lrb5/6.

Regardless of how you feel about the rules, to me it's definitely important that the site uses the same rules overall. Of course there's room for a 'conservative' division that can keep playing lrb4 for as long as they choose. I play mainly Box and League and those are therefore the divisions I would most desperately want to change as soon as possible. Of course, Ranked should also change.

Tbh, the thing perhaps most important to me is that you get to customise the pitch. I won't play beta until this is possible (maybe it already is, who knows?) because the pitch becomes far too small with my screen resolution.

Whether teams are transferred matters less to me, but of course it would be nice. But it would also be nice to start afresh... =) Statistics and history and stuff will be a bit hard to compare between the divisions anyway. Whatever is fine with me, but if a chance to preserve teams are offered, I would probably do it.

Good points sir, well done. I must say I do agree with you on everything. Though there are facets of the new ruleset I don't particulary like, it would be the best for the page as a whole to move as much as possible over. I will certainly launch a charm offensive versus the blood bowl players I know, that don't play here, once it goes live. Not beeing LRB5 has been one reason for people not to play here.
