Play box (as you do) and just put teams on gamefinder whilst you are waiting for the next activation in the box. Then it doesn't hurt so much that you only get one offer an hour. And that's normally not sensible.

It really depends on the time of day that I play, when I play during European peak hours, I prefer black box because it guarantees (almost) me a game, I don't mind playing harder games every now and then, the box usually gives somewhat fair match-ups but obviously you get the occasional one-sided one... But when I play Ranked, it's often hard for me to accept a game I know would be "hard" when I could quite easily get an "easier" game... That is not to say that I only cherry pick weak teams, but it is my prerogative to avoid claw/Mb/PO or some combination thereof.

When I played ranked, it's usually because it's either North American peak hours and the box is dead, or because I'm trying to prep a team for a tournament... In which case, I'd rather not suffer major setbacks because I usually don't have infinite time to recover the team.

If I wanted to prep a team for a tournament and was planning to play lots of BB that day, I'd search on game finder for a little while and if nothing particularly interesting pops up then I'll activate for box and get a game that way.

Also, when I play with Ogres, Halflings, Vampires, etc. I get plenty of game offers :).

Honestly, I just don't bother trying to find a fair game. I generally do the following:

1. Green check every match that doesn't give either side inducements
2. Look to see if any of the coaches I checked are jerks, and uncheck them
3. If no one bites, green check every other match

It rarely gets to step 3 unless I'm offering a bash team. Outside of very slow times, I've inevitably checked a match that puts me at a small disadvantage in step 1, like say, my 1300 tackle-less HE's vs. 1340 Lizards or something.

Yeah, i just greenlight about 200 +/- TV that doesnt contain 4+ clawpombs...

though even those dont usually say yes (ever.)

I usually glove slap in IRC to whip up games in Ranked. With the right opponent, one can get reasonable matches.

tips for getting a game:

#1 don't BS. Select games that you'd accept if the teams/coaches were reversed. Start with the most even matchup not the least.

#2 talk and be friendly in game. too many today act like saying "hello. thanks for playing me. good luck and have fun" is a chore. If you're friendly, win or lose your opponent has fun too and will more apt to game with you in the future.

#3 have diverse teams. If you only play claw teams, orcs and dwarves. You're telling your opponent you're more interested in the attrition than the game. If you are willing to be the "mouse" once in awhile, opponents are more likely to let you be the "cat" in the future.

But yeah, Arktoris is right. I'm generally the cherry (even though it's often a poisonous one :D), and I often play against stronger, bashier, or simply teams I don't stand a chance against if I know the coach is fun and talkative.

Enter Scheduled Smacks. It's not instant gratification, but it actually is a decent way to get some games in between majors with any team. And sometimes you get lucky and win a few.

Haha yeah, it's a tragedy that you can't get a decent match-up for a fairly average 1500 Human team (read 2 rerolls + Leader, 11 players, 2 TackleMBPO).

In fairness gamefinder can be rather frustrating. Especially when you're looking for prep games, aka games that won't leave your team in a worse state than before.

The Cranberries would play you, but then you're building for a tournament and whilst you'll probably win the chances are we'd maim a fair few players.

I greenlight matches, then I work on the Welcome to FUMBBL PM, and the FUMBBL Image Library. I'm just as happy playing or doing those so it's no biggie for me.

I can imagine it's frustrating for you though, and I'd bet very few ranked players willingly face pomb teams which is probably why you're finding it hard to get matches.

So often I'll put up a dozen teams, and the opponent has a few as well, but then will only offer his dorfs vs my stunties.
Banter and decency both help a LOT too.
