Whenever possible, play as if you have one less player on the pitch than you actually have. Leave your least important player alone until your turn is 'over' and then quickly take your opponent's turn in your head. What is his best option? Once you see his best play, move your final player to make his best play less likely to succeed.
(This gets easier with experience, and is especially effective when you have more players on the pitch than your opponent)
