Dice Whining.
I don't like it. Most of the time, when people do it, the actual bias is in their head. Good natured grumbling is fine when the circumstances are truly "anomalous." I've had a few bad games and I hope that I haven't violated my own rule on this. So just to be clear, unless the game is going THIS BADLY please don't moan over the one-die block that actually worked or my rolling three sixes in a row....

I like to use the Dice whiner for experiments. I ask them what rolls they prefer to have, just to test that they actually know the rules. Then I tease them about being from France or Germany. Sometimes I even get to tease them about being from... America, but that is rare.

Holy crap, that was the worst dicing I ever witnessed! And I've been on the receiving end of a few, usually amplified by my general incompetence.
I try to reduce my own whining, or at least be a bit funny about it if I can't reign myself in.

And I know that it won't cover all the injuries you suffered, but that -2DB a thrall did on a BOB resulting in a KO, that had to feel a little good, right?

Troll INT + score! I regret nothing!

VI, get that Troll a completion and he has a Larson already. DO IT!!!!!!
Posted by CanvasBack on 2015-04-07 03:03:12
The last couple of games with my High Elves were not much better. But who knows, maybe I'll turn it around in A.P.E. I think the thrall single handedly putting the BoB out was about the only highlight.

@ Keggie: now I tell them I have an admin client and keep teasing them with that. It's funny when they believe it. :D

I wonder if someone has reported me for that yet...
Posted by Village_Idiot on 2015-04-07 03:38:31
Keggie: you better believe it!! He won't be on the LOS for a while, that's for sure.

What about those who complain more when they're winning, like myself? (yes yes, I know I need to be gutted by four gutter runners with Clawpomb at the same time, shaddap)

I don't let the dice get to me. Although I find the casualties. Nuffle operates the random dice generator. He likes to give and take away sometimes at the same time. How many times have you blitzed the ball carrier and the scatter lands on a low AG player in multiple tacklezones who you cant activate to score to save your life?

Ha ha ha Kam. An opponent the other day (and yes I was dicing him) asked me how much I paid Fumbbl for the good luck. I told him I donated $50 when the server went down, and Id do it agin for a good cause like that. I then told him that he should thank me for this because he wouldn't be able to play without the donations. He was pleasant after that. XD

I don't actually know how much I donated to Fumbbl. Ive done it a several times, and its not nearly enough for the fun I have on here. I can honestly attest that it gives you better luck. You actually raise about 10-15 CR in a week. I swear it happens. Donate now!!!!!

I roll an AWFUL lot of 1s. I RR 1s and get more 1s quite often. Also double skulls that reroll as skulls. I think maybe one out of 5 matches actually goes in my favor. Even minimizing risks, I just generally get picked on by Nuffle, and my record shows it, lol. The real key is to talk and have fun, even if you've only got 3 men left standing. Losing can be fun if you cherish the small victories.

I stopped whining for a while, but recently took up dice whining again, and I don't know why I ever stopped to begin with. I especially enjoy mid-game arguing with other dice whiners over who is the unluckiest, because then we always figure out the facts together and quickly move past any bias. Winning such an argument can also even mean "winning" the actual game, even though I lost.

Dice blaming IS FUN. Let us do it in peace
Posted by Roland on 2015-04-07 09:11:34
I don't whine about the dice, I whine about my stupid plays :D
Posted by vaclav on 2015-04-07 09:16:12
Whining can be fun. Face it! If i am heavly diced i found its much more fun for me to give riddicileous remarks about nuffle, then just to close my eyes and wait to be over. Some guys just dont know to whine with style.
Posted by koadah on 2015-04-07 12:36:25
@vaclav: Ah, but a lot of people would not consider that to be whining.

If you keep it in universe and comment with humour that is NOT whining.

"I roll an AWFUL lot of 1s."

> Read the next issue of the GLN. Just saying. ;)

Plenty of far worse dicings happen.

It's all relative.

As for the whining, we all do it.

It's better manners to keep it in our heads though.

Whenever I'm feeling like my dice are bad, I go here and feel better:

"I roll an AWFUL lot of 1s."

I really do roll a lot of 1's. It happens on average once of every 6 dice rolls. I roll a lot of dice, thus I roll AWFUL lot of 1's. It is a pure luck thing that most of those dice rolls are 2 or 3d blocks, and or I have reroll most of the time.(end of sarcasm.)

MOAR WHINING ABOUT DICE WHINING!!!!!

THE CIRCLE IS ALMOST COMPLETE!!!!!!

I've played and seen enough games to have witnessed the "Tale of Two Halves" effect, where one team totally dominates in the first half and in the second gets totally rocked. Which is another reason I find dice whining, particularly early on, to be poor form.

I've kicked around the idea of confronting whiners with the actual stats from a game. So many times I've gotten the comment, "You never fail a roll, you only roll 6." The kicker being, most of the time these charges are radical departures from reality, bordering on cognitive dissonance. Being able to regurgitate what was actually rolled throughout the match with a stat breakdown might be nice. But to do that, I'd have to do a lot of work writing the rolls down and it seems like it would be a burden without much of a benefit.

Sometimes people will say something like "That series of moves only had a 12% chance of working." I never know if they are right because I don't even try to do their math. Some people only consider it a success when a block knocks you down, others will count push as "safe = successful." I know that when I try low percentage plays its usually the only path open to me. So if they happen to work from time to time, I'm not going to listen to whining about it.

As I've said, good natured grumbling in the face of truly anomalous results is fine. There should be a release valve in that situation, the game should be fun. But a comment like "You only roll 6" sitting in the chat box implies my decisions during the game didn't matter because I was predestined by the RNG to succeed. I don't like that and I will call people on it.

The biggest issue with any documentation of rolls and documenting how many are successful, neutral or fails, resides in how people use them.

Some people will try and argue that they only lost because of dice and thusly rob you of the emotional payoff of a win. They might even go a step further and feel they are entitled to wins regardless of dice based on the team makeup, team matchup, opposing coaches CR, win % or any criteria that qualifies why they deserve the win over the other coach.

Once you accept that certain unlikely strings of dice can have a profound impact on games and youre comfortable being on either side of that, then it becomes more interesting to view these things.

I'm bringing this back to the Seahawks and the Super Bowl loss - if the Seahawks hadn't called a pass and the CB hadn't made the right read and break on the ball then you could argue the seahawks may have won. But that didn't happen, the game played out the way it did. We can only reflect on what to do in a situation in the future (feed the Beast)

Why do you care what some bum thinks?

When they come with that stuff just start dropping smilies on 'em. ;)

The first time tell em "yeah, I practise every day". After that just smilies all the way until the "cya". ;)

If you find yourself saying "pffft" every time your opponent rolls a pow, your headspace has been compromised and you will likely lose. If you can discipline yourself to not believe in your own cosmic dice-curse (which is imaginary I assure you), your game will clean up considerably.

Dice whining is fun, if made in the right way
Posted by licker on 2015-04-08 16:58:10
Kodah has the right of it. If your enjoyment of the game is predicated on your opponent slurping your skillz from his knees then the issue is entirely yours, not theirs.

I love dice whining and dice whiners, admit it, you all do too.

As usual, licker misidentifies the issue. My enjoyment is not predicated on my opponent figuratively sucking cock. That's what you meant right? It is however at least influenced by how much of a whiny bitch my opponent is and since learning how to read, I haven't figured out how to "un-read" things I see that happen to be words in English. Believe, me I wish I could because some of the things I read here make me want to give my corneas a hard scrubbing with bleach.
