I just got back on track with playing lizardmen in the box. The first team I ever played in fumbbl was lizardmen with a 9-1-7 record & seeing Hitonagashi & Garion do some good plays with them I set up to see how does it go playing a stunty-hybrid in the box. I didnt setup any goals in mind originally, but things just seemed to keep going my way & I got more and more ambitious with my plays.
When we were 5-0-0 on the wins track with 0 touchdowns conceded after 5 games it started feeling like there was something special about these skinks & sauri.
So match 6 we drew JockMcRowdy's Woodies (gulp!), not an ideal matchup for sure! No worries though our Block/pomber took out Jock's sidestepping WD on turn 1.. and a few turns later the other WD was fouled and we were on track ending up winning 2-1. The defeat to bloodbowl playing dinosaurs was too much to bear and the opposing team was retired.
The lizzies kept having just superb luck, though hito claims its not luck, it just feels like it cause they play so different from other teams.. Regardless after 14 matches we were TV 1620 and 14-0-0 and 4 touchdowns conceded.
Our final and only defeat came vs wood elves. We drew Malmir's wood elves then, and despite some coach failure we managed to hold wood elves out of scoring range for 8 turns in their half. In our own half we are marching towards the 15th win when the 2nd wardancer gets a 1die blitz -> pow -> MNG on our sidestepping skink, no worries they fail the pickup & the bounce is towards our opponents endzone, unfortunately in the end the Wood elves pickup from 2 zones and end up caging to the end. We were really ruined by trying to keep the skinks too lean, had we had even 1-2 dt/ss skinks, the game would have gone very different indeed.
In the end we managed a 15-0-1 record, playing against a chaos team, 4 chaos dwarf teams, a pact team, a dark elf team, a human team, a khemri team, a necromantic team, an ogre, 2 orc teams, a skaven team and 2 wood elf teams.
So, why are lizards so cool in the box?
Blodging skinks are obviously huge, ma6 st4 is the other thing, finally there's a LOT of teams that cant handle losing 1-2 guys so a pomber belongs in the build. I did not buy a single break tackle getting to this 15-0-1 record, and like hitonagashi, I am unsure if any break tackle is really necessary at all. Block saurus are really cool too.
I had a oneturner in the team (ma9, later ma9 ag4), but never got to finish one (mostly due to not conceding touchdowns, heh). Was very close in my final game, where the ott was a gfi, pass, catch & anoter gfi away, but lacking RRs we didnt manage to make the gfi..
All in all, very impressed with what the lizardmen can do at <1700 TV. My feeling is, building up the right kind of skink/sauri, right kind of inducements, lizzies could really rock the boat in a major in the future..
.. So get playing lizzies, really a cool & unique team!
And here's november/december's Black Box Junior Sprint, for those who wonder why the 16 game run was so important ;-)
