Forlorn Races and FUMBBL Majors... Oh My!
Hey everyone!

Was at a bit of a loss for things to do today and did a bit of forum surfing. After a bit of ambling around I came across the "Forlorn Races" or those who have never won a Major tournament.

Now, this got me thinking of a long, long, long term goal for my FUMBBL journey in trying to achieve the impossible (?). This is where you come in! There are (seemingly) races that are more likely to be able to do it such as Pact or Lizardmen but is that as crazily optimistic as a Slann/Underworld attempt? I want your input here.

I will stress that this is not aimed as an immediate thing. I will be taking things as they come (SWL, Rookie/Open Leagues etc) and if the team is ready they will be entered, if not then not!

Anyway, this idea interests me a lot.

Which team should I choose? And more importantly, why? I must say, Underworld could be a right laugh, but all those teams have their charms. Leaping Slann, Bloodsuckers, Malicious mummies? Oh yeah, it ain't going to be Flings... Sorry!

I look forward to your thoughts and selections for this super, long term challenge I want to set myself.

May the dice be always in your favour,

DrPoods

I'm determined to bring glory to khemries. Tried one major and few BBBs with flings too, but it was a bit too much. Forlorn races are fun and relatively stress free. There isn't so much pressure when you are playing with less competitive race. So go for it!

If it's difficult to make up your mind what race to pick, you can always start 2, one in ranked and another in box.

I would say slanns are quite of a challenge but a fun one. Either you love them or you hate them.

Go slann!

Good calls Kelkka & CroixFer! To be honest, for a while I was considering Pact. But I am leaning towards Underworld for some craziness. I do love the "anything can happen" feel too!

But I will wait and see if there seems to be a consensus...

Considering the amount of coaches who win Major tournaments ever I would say that not only is it a very optimistic goal but one that it's likely you'll never achieve. I would suggest (as I am doing) going for a goal of wining a minor title with one of these teams, a Rumble, a Brawl, a SMACK or something and then try entering a Major and see how you fare.

As to your question though there are a good range of forlorn teams. Some like Necros and Lizzies should be unforlorned with time and probably should have won one already. Others like Ogres will likely never win one ever (at least with CRP 6 ogre teams). Most stunties fall towards the bottom end. Decide what you think will be most fun :D

If you are really well ARRd become a SprintARR!

And of course a BrawlARR!

I did say it was the impossible goal!

But that is a good idea getting involved in the other tourneys. Also, while I would try my best (winning is more fun after all!) a lot of it is in the process and who knows? The stars might align just once :D

The teams I was considering were Pact, Slann and Underworld at present. I just reckon mutation access is heaps of fun and can make for some fascinating development options. Obviously Slann are for their unique style instead.

I remember quite a few years ago, watching Ulrik just lose a major final, and I decided then that I'd try and unforlorn Lizzies. That obsession has kept me playing the scaly things for the last 4+ years. Be careful what you wish for..

PACT all the way ! Chaos All Stars !
Posted by PaddyMick on 2014-01-31 12:21:16
What's the softest major tournament to enter? ie which tourney will your best shot with which team?

Also for such a noble cause, shameless picking in ranked should be ok karma-wise to build them.

Posted by BooAhl on 2014-01-31 12:21:34
I have brought Lizzies to a Semi(against Khemri which then lost final) and Necros to a final.

And then I went out by luck (ofcourse).

So Khemri(maybe not CRP?), Lizzards and Necros are more than doable. Pact should be doable as well.

Slann, they get to high TV, UW break to easy. Undead should be able to reach higher, and possible norse.

So tier 1 forlons: Lizz, Necs and Pact.
Tier 2: Undead, Human
Tier 3: Slann, UW, Khemri, Vamps
Tier 4: Flings, gobbos, Ogre

Did I forget somebody?
Posted by BooAhl on 2014-01-31 12:22:29
Norse I forgot...
Tier 2 or tier 3.

Ogre don't show under the 'forlorn' races when i look at the Grotty Little Tourneys forlorn races?
Posted by King_Ghidra on 2014-01-31 12:59:08
Ogres aren't forlorn in fumbbl history, as they won WoC I under Lrb4 rules when you could field 11 Ogres.
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-01-31 13:12:57
I would have thought that with Decay, Khemri could lose those valuable TGs much easier than LRB4... Losing one could well be a disaster!
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-01-31 13:15:31
Hmmm. Seriously tempted by Pact and Underworld. If I am going to do it, would love it to be with mutation madness!!
Posted by King_Ghidra on 2014-01-31 13:25:57
Softest Major would be some combination of least number of matches plus possibly favourable or soft qualifiers. I don't think you'll find a major where you can win it in less than 7 games.

I think the GLT is maybe the best bet. If you get a small qualifier you'll probably play 3 matches in your quali, and then 4 in the finals, and there's a good chance you can meet non-optimal teams in the quali at least thanks to the fluffy nature of that major and the criteria by which the qualis are set up.

Ulthuan is probably the other option. 7 games seems likely, and if you play on the light side, you won't have to worry about the nasty bashers, though you may have to contend with a bunch of precisely crafted elves.

Thanks mate!

Thinking of two teams(?). Underworld for AAR and Box tourneys (minor/major) and Pact for Ranked tourneys.

Good plan?
Posted by drunkagent on 2014-01-31 13:57:39
Oh and one last thing you have to an outstanding coach I mean Petew tried and failed with hunans and Ulrik failed with Lizzies and I think Fanatic gave vamps a shot too. The great and the good have given it a go and failed so don't be to sad if it all goes tits up :)
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-01-31 14:12:47
No worries mate! I realise others have tried and got close who are far better coaches than I. But it is just a really long term project for me! If it goes tits up, so be it. Will keep plugging away.

Welcome to the Chet Manley All Stars. This Pact team will be my Ranked tourney team.

Fummbbl client bug, that you cannot hire mercenary positional instead of MNG one, really hurts Khemries :(
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-01-31 15:43:40
Blackbox tourney/AAR team done - Welcome Si, Barone!

The journey begins!

@ BooAhl: Undead have actually come pretty close to winning a major several times (I remember at least Smeesh and Brainsaw making it to a final in the last few years). I always forget who it was who did those Google Docs with the Major performance of all races but if I recall correctly, Lizards and Undead were the strongest Forlorn Races.
Posted by Frankenstein on 2014-01-31 20:01:55
Lizardman, Undead and Chaos Pact teams have reached a CRP-Major final twice, Necromantic and Khemri once. These races should probably win a Major one day (except for Khemri perhaps, as the number of grandfathered tomb guardians diminishes continually).

Human, Underworld, Slann, Norse and Vampire teams reached at least CRP-Major semifinals. I find it unlikely that theses teams will ever have a shot at a Major-title though except for highly unusual circumstances (godlike dice, forfeits, extremely favourable draws etc.).

Amazon, High Elf and Ogre could be considered as new-era forlorn as well, since they haven't been able to clinch a Major under CRP.
Posted by PainState on 2014-01-31 20:28:01
The common thread of the forlorn are they are the tweener races and AG3. They do not come out of the box set up for Bash or Elfball.

That is why any of them are going to need outside factors to come through for them to win a major.
Posted by Kelkka on 2014-01-31 20:40:30
Decay doesn't make winning one match harder. Odds for TG leaving game early are still the same (cas+regen fail). But the resulting injuries are more severe and can make long run tourny more difficult. Khemries are not so horrible really. Just medium bad.
Posted by albinv on 2014-01-31 22:37:48
Ha! Great idea, your not going the clawbomb way or something. I love it.

Id say Slann, since i remember you being interested in them when you were about starting out on fumbbl, and because they have such a great scoring potential (probably of all the forlorn races). But honestly i dont know, just my 2 pennies.

Anyway you take it, this will be seriously hard, and since its wisely picked as long term goal, i guess you'll have the chance to try with different teams anyway.
Yep, but for my 2 pennies and my choice, Slann. :)
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-01-31 23:56:00
Yep. albinv! It is a definite pipe dream/long term goal. And don't speak too soon! Underworld need to control the player count any way they can so some CPOMB might be a viable option. As far as Pact goes it seems a killer or two is vital but I prefer balanced styles if I can as opposed to a side with only 1 player type.

We will see!

And yes, Slann will be getting a run as well. A mate has challenged me to a 3 team competition. They are Underworld/Pact/Slann.

Is anyone else trying this? A forlorn races meta group perhaps! Seems to be enough interest!!!
Posted by Rabe on 2014-02-01 01:25:05
I have a necro team dedicated to that cause, but I haven't really played them yet. ;-) I suggested a mete-group for necros, but a meta-group for all those races seams doable. The group info could show the records of past teams that got close and such.
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-02-01 04:45:00
Yep. The Forlorn races metagroup. That would be awesome. Anyone keen on getting involved with this as an idea?
Posted by albinv on 2014-02-01 16:01:32
@DrPoods
"And don't speak too soon!"

Your right, some do need the Clawpombs. Was rather referring to the spread Chaos, Cds build - so the route with the fewest challenges and resistance, while having rather difficult consequences on the whole thing that fumbbl is.

But honestly, i was about to include in my first post you have my blessings ;) to go the the full Clawpomb route even. Guess, you will always stay a goodhearted fumbbler. :)

On the Forlon Races Metagroup, i like that, count me in it "representing" Slann if it should get done.

Posted by DrPoods on 2014-02-02 10:32:14
Ha ha, cheers mate! Got to play in the right spirit.

Besides, I just see 11 clawpombers at one time to not be the best way to win. Having a few? Sure, but (for me) you need a variety of skills. Unless your aim is wanton destruction of course.

On another note, what kind of forlorn niche could you find? The AAR seems to be almost a forlorn setup. How would you go about setting it up anyway? Hmmm... thinking hats on!
Posted by DrPoods on 2014-03-13 05:10:28
A little update.

It appears at this point that I am coaching best with Khemri and Lizardmen.

Need to get a Box side going with them too. More options dont'cha know...
Posted by DrPoods on 2015-03-16 03:13:09
Hmmm... Undead huh?
