There are scrually more affordable alienware's these days, so I wouldn't write it off. I've owned both slienware snd maingear and both are well worth your money, and can be affordable in the right configuration. Maingears are just better but alienwares are certainly more stylish.

I recommend you get one with an integrated screen and keyboard otherwise I'm afraid it won't be of much use.

What is the limit missing to play civ6? A separate graphics card? Your current specs seem reasonable. I would think for 600 pounds you can get a decent games machine, not for top specs of course.

Well, taking the risk to be thrown rocks and so on, i would advice you to check some acer that could suit you. They are really cheap for what they offer and if your use is the one you described, you dont need any extra durability or harness options typical trademarks (Toshiba, HP and some other ones) say they give you for the big amount of money they ask for the same features.
I can tell you to check this model, for instance
https://www.amazon.es/Acer-Aspire-F15-F5-573G-74UR-Port%C3%A1til/dp/B01K9XGA0Q/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1477158645&sr=8-6&keywords=portatiles+acer+i7
Guess you can find even better one for a little less if you check a bit, i had not the time to do that now or to check those small sufixes in the processor name that could mean a little speed improvement.
Just my 2 cents!

I know a lot of people avoid eBay, but these days there is plenty of good gaming laptops on there for well within your budget from established eBay stores with very good feedback scores. Might be worth checking out.

Asus Republic of Gamers is my choice.

indeed - go for Alienware/ROG.
if you want a well rigged laptop you could look for Clevo... but getting them could be a true challenge! the thing is, you might stumble in a model with MXM graphic card that you could update in the future, but this has become less of importance since the advent of external GPU holders for laptops (but they add another box and another PSU).
I'd love a 15" 4:3 screen or a 17" (the bigger the better), now the trend is GO RECTANGLE and it's pissing me off a little.
Oh, install graphic cards updates only from Asus. Not from the GPU maker. believe me. the GPU maker only makes the chip, then the laptop maker slams in inside his motherboard and adapt the hardware. somehow. I've cooked my GT450m on my preferred laptop :(

I have an Asus ROG laptop and it's fantastic. I play XCOM 2 with graphics maxed out consistently at 60fps. I'd definitely recommend that if you're grabbing a new laptop and don't mind spending a bit. The latest one even has an nvidia 1070 and a SSD built in. Thing is a beast!

Thanks for all the input people!
Will take a look through the ROG catalogue and Alienware and see what I find.
And some other points - yes gary mostly the graphics card.
And yes pythrr - i've done the bog-standard kiwi thing and moved to London (just in time for the pound to crap itself now i'm earning...)
