Kids
My 4-year-old son's favourite toys go from one extreme to the other. At one end, are modern gadgets, such as our i-pad, at the other, a handful of toothpicks will keep him amused for days...

We noticed at 1 or 2 years they were as interested in the boxes toys came in as they were the toys themselves. :-)

Boxes. Excellent!
As they older they progress to those long cardboard tubes you get with wrapping paper. Excellent swords/light sabres. They don't last very long though.
Bigger kids need the industrial ones from textile factories. ;)
They can be a pretty good Gandalf with a stick and an old broom handle but be prepared for someone to lose an eye. ;)

Nah, they don"t shoot you. Arrest you, imprison you, beat you around the genitals, sure. Shooting is reserved for serious stuff, like posting on youtube.
