Too far.

I give up on FIFA. I will never knowingly consume a FIFA product again. I went in to the game a minor Dutch fan.

Throughout the horrendous calls (no red for De Jong's flying kick really?) I voiced my thoughts, namely that the ref had been told not to affect the outcome if he could avoid it (a PK each way was obvious, one against Percy one on a pull on a Dutch arm in the box that my grandmother with gloucoma would have spotted). Going into the OT I said I would be happy as long as it did not go to penalties and ate my words.

Spain should be more ashamed of not winning the world diving championships than they are proud of this "victory".

correction: I went to watch the game I didn't "go to the game"

SPAIN 2010 WORLD CHAMPION!!!

PODEMOS!!!!

I thought the ref sucked as well & honestly I thought the Dutch aggressive play was what they needed to win. What I will also say is this, I've never watched the world cup as I've never been much of a soccer fan, but my cubs suck & I had time on my hands, so I decided to take it all in. After watching the final & taking it all in, I've never watched a sport where players pantomime injuries on such a constant basis & all in all it's just lame as hell. Even comical how they cringe in severe agony only to pop up a second later like nothing happened. Give me a break! The NFL season can't come soon enough. Congrats Spain, I guess, though the only thing you win in my book is the worlds best actors award.

I will really never understand this "mommy they don't play the game like I want" attitude...
Spain was fouled a lot and they correctly took out of it what they could like every other freaking team would do too.
The netherlands should have recieved four red cards after after half one, in any other match of this worldcup they would have been wiped off players on the field and utterly defeated.
The way netherlands sucked the result doesn't display.

Nevertheless I really adore the refree for not making that a mudfight and forcing Spain to earn that title wich they did. The yellow-red was long about time ten minutes to the end and just what a reasonable person would give as an advantage on the field. The refree interepreted the rules in a way that was reasonable beyond anything i have seen ever in football. He is awsome. Spain took their chances and deserved so. Spain is now the best team in football.
Netherlands really sucks.

Long Live the Octopus!

"The yearly amount of octopus fished by spanish fishermen exceeds the amount of german and dutch workers by a huge margin"

fear... thats what the octopusses life is based on!

lol Wreckage I will never understand the mommy he came near me so I cry attitude. seriously the argument's for diving are essentially "it's not diving it is requesting a call". Ridiculous, childish, the gentlemen's sport is no more.

I leave off with this (second ten in the first link deserves rewatching.

Seriously, diving?

Did we see the same game?

If the only way to stop a team is to foul and kick them off the park, well, then so be it. But don't say they dive.

And FYI: (American) football is for sissies and wankers. Wanna play the real game? Drop your armor and play rugby.
Posted by Resarf on 2010-07-12 16:14:04
Yes, seriously: DIVING. Man I'm part italian don't tell me not to say people dive, I freaking know they dive, everyone knows they dive. Diving is as much cheating as covering up a foul, and as cardable, and not kept in check nearly well enough by FIFA.

Rugby is tougher than american football, I wouldn't call it a sissy sport though... curling and darts are sissy sports. Unless it's lawn darts.

The ref handed that game to the Spanish, period. How about the line judges calling every single Dutch offsides the second it happened, but somehow they missed when Inestes (sorry if I misspelled) is offsides for the winning goal? Spain deserves nothing other than a light applause for taking advantage of the hand they were dealt. And they clearly were the better actors on Sunday. Yes, the Dutch players did their fair share of diving too, but at least they were touched when they dived. Several times a Spanish player dived when he was touched by his own team mate or he kicked himself in the legs (that one was really sad).
Posted by Melmoth on 2010-07-12 16:45:50
Dutch should have been down to 9 after 30 minutes. I really wonder how they can complain about the ref.
Posted by JanMattys on 2010-07-12 16:50:33
lol @ Resarf comment about being half italian.

I'm italian both halves, and I think Spain totally deserved it.
1- They played better football
2- They kept possession, and in the immortal words of Nils Liedholm: "having possession is nice because opponents won't score if you have the ball"
3- Netherlands played dirty
4- Netherlands wasted two chances THIS big. And when you waste chances THIS big when they matter, you deserve to lose.

Meh, I love it when the only comment about winners is "stupid cheaters". And I love about the "gentlemen's sport is no more" argument. You know what? At professional level, everybody dives. Every forward will fall if touched in the penalty box. And if they don't, it's not because they play fair. It's because they are not experienced enough to know that they should fall, or because they think they can still reach the ball even if touched. Also, it's job for the referee to spot a dive, and it's exactly the job of a defender to touch the ball and not the forward. Always blaming the diver shows a rather poor grasp of both concepts.

This idea that the winners are the cheaters who got away with it is, frankly, nonsensical. Italy in 2006 played the better football of the whole tournament, with the possible exception of Germany, and still a lot of people called us divers instead of rightful champions. Spain in 2010 played the better football as a team (proof: even steamrolling Germany was unable to score against Spain's superior midfield and slow, controlled play), and people call them divers. I will call them rightful champions.

Congratulations to Spain. See you in the Eurocup 2012, where we will probably see another Germany-Spain clash. I really can't see Itay, France or England recover fast enough to be able to create problems to the two new European masters. Not in two years anyway.
Posted by Resarf on 2010-07-12 18:58:14
so your argument is: "everyone does it"

you win because that's a winning argument.

I did not suggest that they cheated any more or less than the Dutch, I thought they outplayed the Dutch. I did not say Spain were not the rightful winners. I do say it's a shame it went down the way it did (it being Spain's players and the cup).

FIFA more or less ignores that "it's job for the referee to spot a dive". This ruined what I thought was a good match. I've said it before and I'll say it again it was even more wrong that DeJong wasn't red carded before. Maybe some european can answer why soccer is the only game with "if in the opinion of the official" before every rule? It would go without saying if it weren't for the fact that the reffing and angling by players is worse than in any other sport. So yeah, lame me for being sad it isn't a gentlemen's game.

@Flashback- that goal was clearly onside from what I've seen, he was off for a pass forward that he wasn't part of (and thus rightly was not called) but back in time for the one that came to him.
Posted by Sionis on 2010-07-12 19:19:34
@Flashback13

The winning goal was onsides by about a mile.

I'll be the first to admit I'm no 'soccer' expert & probably igonorant to the 'finer' points of the game as well so maybe I was a bit harsh on the ref, but not by much. However I never commented on whether 'soccer' was a tough sport or not & as it stands I believe the men who play it are quite stout & conditioned though they certainly don't take the physical abuse, armor or not, that NFL players do & yes I understand they are differenet sports w/ different rule sets. As for the diving, yep it's there & big time & on both sides throughout 'soccer'. I wasn't just singling out Spain, although their acting was very SUPERB! Does diving happen in most all sports? The resounding answer is 'YES', but not so much as I've seen in 'soccer'. Does it ruin MY experience of sports? Yep, it sure does regardless of the sport. No need to pantomime & pretend you are hurt to try & draw a foul or call you don't deserve. Be a man, take your lumps & get on w/ it folks.

Rugby is also a tough sport & much more similar to NFL football in both physicality & the athletes that play it, although I don't believe either is 'tougher' than the other. Yes there are non-padded hits in Rugby, but not nearly as many one on one hits as NFL football has within a game thus the 'armor' as you call it. I'm willing to bet if you put an NFL player on a Rugby field & a Rugby player on an NFL field, for a full game/match, they will both come out w/ respect for the others sport. But leave it to an ignorant person to say something like 'american football is for sissies & wankers' w/out even bothering to back up his statement w/ some kind of reasoning. I've played soccer, rugby & football so don't tell me what game is tougher either as I'm willing to bet you've not played them all & experienced the 'day after' effect from each of those sports to compare.

That is all...

I feel that in the first half... we saw no 'diving' by the Spanish....

We saw many a legit tendon straining dirty tackle and a kick to the chest though.

Early in the second the Spanish tried diving and were not rewarded with more cards. Thus NED decided to go back to maiming the Spanish (which I totally appreciate).

This is the one time where I felt the subjective nature of the ref in Soccer helped. The most objective system in the world would have produced a blowout as NED would have had roughly 9 men by the start of the second half.

Dutch got out played and deserved to lose.

Rugby VS NFL? we are talking World Cup Football...not who has the bigger dick.

they could have both been fouled and dove, because in some soccer games more than one check takes place ...not exactly rocket science, and I think pretty close to the truth.
