In Search of the "Perfect Fit"
Hey all,

Was chatting on IRC earlier and it seemed apparent to the other party to the chatter that the teams I have played (in the main) are not really a "natural fit". As in, I should really be playing another race and concentrating on them.

The opinion tendered was that I am a "seat of the pants coach" whether I admit it or not and I must say that some of what was said really struck a chord. The opinion was that I subconsciously feel constrained by certain races and therefore play conservatively which, the individual in question thought, I shouldn't be doing. That it isn't me as a coach. I am not going to repeat any of it here as it might skew the opinions I am looking for. With that in mind I ask the following...

Which race should I be playing? This is not to say I wouldn't play anyone else. For those who have specced my games or played against me or just generally have an opinion on this through chatting with me I am desperate to know what race(s) are a natural fit.

So please, pop your opinions on here. If you don't know me from a bar of soap then it probably isn't worth it. Also, I fluctuate in my personal opinions so whatever is decided here will be stuck too. My Slann story will continue even if they are not considered "perfect" as I am invested in the tale and have a plan for it. It can be a change of pace from my proper team.

Go on! Help ole Poods out with THE race he should be playing. The natural fit. The proper squad.

I would ask that people be serious with their responses so a reasoning would be appreciated.

Thanks very much. It is time I settled myself on the "right" team.

PS: It doesn't have to be a team I have played much, or one I have said I like before. Could even be a race I have an awful record with. Remember that I played certain teams when I was starting out and had no idea what I was doing. I like to think I am a batter coach now.

No preconceptions! =D

Cheers
Poods

What is your goal? Depending on what you want to achieve I will answer differently.
Posted by DrPoods on 2015-02-05 15:21:47
There isn't a goal per se.

It is simply about those who have watched, played me, chatted etc seeing things in how I play that corresponds with a certain race. I know that is a bit "zen noobism" but that is what I am looking for.

As a terrible example, I might do certain things playing as Chaos (simply the team I have played the most) that makes people think I should play, I dunno, Underworld or something.

Does that make sense? It isn't about achievement really, just who I should be playing.

I know what you mean. I know I'm a bit risk averse, and whenever I play ag4 races i feel like i'm not playing them at their best because I don't have an inclination for the game-changing risky stuff that they should be doing. Also I seem to man mark by inclination which means I give too many hits on av7.

All of the above works fine with tanky regen stuff like undead and necros, but when i play with other races i have to make a real effort not to go into what seems to be my default mode.

You're searching for the shoe, that fits you best, Cinderella. Did I get that right?
Posted by DrPoods on 2015-02-05 16:00:01
Exactly FRSHMN. Not how I tried to phrase it, but certainly an element of that... Sounds awful now.

But the fact remains that sometimes you need a fresh perspective.
Posted by gamelsetlmatch on 2015-02-05 16:07:20
Probably Undead and Necro.

You are a very sociable player who doesn't get 'attached' to players and/or teams. Which is a blessing in disguise.

What I read most from this is that you are rounding the corner as far as your comfort level comes in to play. More of your moves within a turn are becoming automatic (muscle memory) and if I were a betting man..

..this was prompted because the teams you have been playing, you are second guessing your moves/plays. I think, this is feeding your concern that you might be playing the wrong race.

Halflings! No, seriously, try a number of different races, you'll see where you settle. I ended up with Humans, so anything can happen.

If you are a balls to the wall coach, then you should go;

Rats! ... or Slann :-D

Sinse I started playing BB here and elsewhere I too have been in (and still am to some degree) your situation, or close very to it. I have flip-flopped back'n forth so many times never really feeling comfortable.

There are some races that I tend to have a 'natural' intuition with, at least thats the case on 'the other game'; my records on here tell a pretty differant story. Anyway those races generally are; Humans, Pro-Elves, Skaven, Ork (though it is hard not to go wrong with the latter), and Goblins!

We are all differant, differant races appeal to differant coaches. I'm not a lover of the 'dead-themed' races - never have been, but thats just me; I do enjoy playing against them tho.

I dont know you real well so I cant rightly say, 'you should be playing!' anyt particular race, I might give you my idea's which may help you narrow down the selection:

write down all the race names on a note or sheet of paper.

#1. work out the race/s that you absolutely hate/dispise/want-to-ahnihalate-with-atomic-bomb-with-ultimate-passion! Once you are aware of it/them.. cross them off your list. (it may be that one of those that you 'would' do best with! but winning may not be as important to you as having fun!) In my case, I really, really, dont like Dwarf, I have never played a game with them and I am 99.99% sure I never will, however if I did play with them its highly likely that I would do failry well, due to their OP nature.

#2. figure out (if you can) which style of play you prefer. Maybe you like Bashing!, maybe you like Passing! or maybe you prefer humbbly running that ball downfield!, or perhaps lobbing gobos is your prefered method of scoring TD's..? Or maybe you like a combination of these? ..Knowing this will help ou narrow down your selection.

#3. Do you like stunty teams? if you dont.. cross them off your list.

#4. Do you like having a team that functions out the box like Ork, or Human? (and others similar) or do you prefer the less skilled (at first) Chaos, or Pact (and similar)?

#5. Do you like the Living or the Dead?

You can ask yourself any questions you like but the idea is to narrrow it down so you dont have so many options to consider, your golden egg should now be one of the remaing races. Hope my wall has helped!

i vote power elves, either high or dark. but looking at your replays, your play strongly favores a higher armor bash and dash style of elf play. your other conservative measures with other teams does force you to play the odds harder. IMO, either dark or high elves would allow both the move and the armor as well as the skills to play to your coaching strengths.
Posted by Cavetroll on 2015-02-05 18:40:48
Based on an extremely limited sample set, I say you should play khemri. The one time we played one another your dice were golden. Surely that will be the case every game.

I would say either go Necro or High Elves.

Reasoning

1. Necro because you have the benefit of AV8 or better and Regen across the board and there is reasonably easy blodge access on Wolves and . Werewolves with stats and doubles are beastly and right pains in the butt. You also have the Wights which have the S access and allow a bit of a bash game. There's also a lot of fun to be had in building your bench through killing fools and adding the history there.

You can take big fun risks with your Werewolves, you can bash with your Wights, you can foul with a deep zombie bench...there's a lot to like and do with a Necro team.

2. High Elves because you get blanket AV8 which will be more beneficial than the flimsy AV7 when you invariably fail a dodge or fail a gfi or you face non claw teams with MB. You have the AG to dodge away and more than anything else, they are a blank canvass to build hyper specialized elves out of. Dark Elves might be better but I think it'd be more fun to carve out a niche for yourself and see where the skill rolls take you. I'd also think that Woodies are a fit but depends on how you feel about AV7.

Process of elimination:

Amazon: Not versatile enough
Chaos: Nobody, not even you want another Chaos team
Chaos Dwarves: See Chaos
Chaos Pact: Fun with 3 Big Guys but not dynamic enough
Dark Elf: Possibility
Dwarf: Not versatile enough
Elf: Fragile and expensive leading to frustration
Goblin: Obvious Challenge Team
Halfling: Obvious Challenge Team
High Elf: Possibility
Human: Like an off-brand version of Necro. You can play them several ways and build role players and have fun with that aspect of the team but barring stat rolls they will always be a step behind the competition in some regard. Love them but they might not have enough "character".
Khemri: Should be an antonym in the thesaurus to versatile
Lizardmen: Fun team but they are weird to develop
Necormatic: Possibility
Norse: They are a team that exists in Bloodbowl
Nurgle: You would demean yourself and everyone on Fumbbl
Ogre: Obvious Challenge Team
Orc: Not as versatile but you could do worse and Orc puns are fun
Skaven: If you can stomach the attrition they are highly rewarding. Very versatile!
Slann: They're like a swiss army knife consisting of a bunch of corkscrews and one actual knife. Not recommended for anyone but geniuses and masochists (I think you know where I fall on that spectrum)
Undead: Like Necro but not as versatile
Vampire: Obvious Challenge Team but one of the true joys of playing because they are so different
Wood Elf: Possibility

Are you having fun? If so, then ignore that coach's "insight". If not, then find what is fun. That simple.

From what I have observed, you like bouncing around a lot w/ diff teams and diff approaches, and based on that I ~believe~ (could be wrong) that if you found one "perfect fit" team, you'd quickly become bored with them, no matter how "perfect".

If(?) that coach's insight is valid, then stick to dodgier, more flexible teams like DElfs and Skaven, Slann and Zons, and shy away from Dwarves and Khemri and the like. Or not.

Have fun!

Some very interesting points being made here. Some suggestions are being made that I wouldn't have sprung to mind. Keep 'em coming as it is much appreciated. It seems that we are edging slowly towards a consensus actually. I don't want to give anything away as it will affect the results.

But thanks very much to all so far. Appreciate it.

As I've not yet had the honor of playing you, this is based fully on your coach page, where one particular team seems to be mostly missing.

Humans! And not just because I like them; they got a bit of bash, enough staying power with av 8, and they are actually quite fast.

Furthermore agi 3 means risks/dodges are likely to work, but never something you 'just' do. They make you think, and in my opinion games stay fresh, since you play differently based upon your team's build, and the team you're playing against. (Heck, I've switched from trying to score fast to passing plays to slow bash grind in a single game more than once!)

Give them a shot. Plus the BB has the HLP!

Great post by mrt1212. +1

Really doesnt leave much i could add.

Should i still come up with ideas on how to advice you so that will make it easier for me to win a match against you - ill let you know.

Ofc Smeats reminder should never be forgotten as well. Good luck finding that perfect fit!

(If it will be zons ill LAST TURN foul you every turn tho!! I can do it...)

Certainly can! I don't think Zons springs to everyone's minds though...

=D

I roll terrible, so I tend to play races that are expected to go splat and stay splat (Rats, Gobs, sometimes Norse if I'm feeling bold because tackle later means zons don't have staying power) --- better than elves, more move for same armor-ish)

My favorite team to play is necro, once the wolves and wights grab a skill or three. I can't for the life of me play undead (not enough hitting power, mummies be damned and ghouls too fragile) and can't play khemri (all three times I started teams, they played in pouring rain. Yeah, no.)

I would just say play races you expect to go splat and don't grow attached to them, then have fun doing it so that when the occasional troll throw results in a touchdown, it's that much sweeter. Necromantic is nice and balanced, and if you can somehow get some doubles in the sauri, a team full of Diving Tackle sauri (and Jump Up later if blessed with another) means your team will be a -real- threat.
Posted by Luohghcra on 2015-02-06 10:32:44
When having this same sort of dilemma some time ago, I somehow settled on Khemri - The initial games were due to an extended challenge laid down to essentially play 100 games with khemri. I gave it a whirl in the box, and was... strangely exhilarated by the freedom that came with playing a 'mediocre' race. Your opponents don't expect much, your fans don't expect much, YOU don't expect much - and then they win!
So I was having fun, and I also found that I was becoming a (more or less) better coach - I had found my 'fit'.
Part of it was coaching style, part of it was the challenge, and part (a pretty big part) was the fun - the fluff, the banter, the indiscriminate fouling.

At the end of the day, your 'natural fit' team doesn't just have to come down to coaching - it could be about your feels for the team too. So, pick a race where you can indulge and fluff it up.

Based on previous convos, your current teams, and the reading of entrails, I say - run those Xhotl Sun Gods, run them into the ground!

Or I dunno... Helfs, probs :P

This the right tune ofc. Maybe it cheers you up a bit, and that helps a bit with the decision. ;)

Luohghcra hits why I play Goblins so much - there is no internal pressure to win and no disappointment from not winning. It's about playing the game as well as possible but having fun and being silly while I do so.
