Yet another new league idea
So, partly inspired by the Battle of Britain competition and partly by the LC format, I've been thinking about a new league I'd like to run/play in. Let me know what you think.

------------------------------
It consists of two (initially) conferences of 8 teams each. A single season is made up of three stages, and takes places over the course of two months.

1. The Conferences: At first, a 4-round Swiss tournament is played over the first 4 weeks. The first round is seeded randomly.

2. At the end of that, there are two knock-out competitions:

The Challenge Cup: The top three teams from each conference enter a knockout tournament for the Challenge Cup, with the champions of each conference winning a bye into the second round.

The Inter-Conference Shield: The remaining teams compete in a competition between the two conferences, to determine which conference is the bestest. 4th plays 4th, 5th plays 5th, etc. in one off games, and the conference with the most wins are declared the victors.

3. Open Friendlies: After the cups (and acting both as an incentive to get your games played on time and to keep you interested while waiting for others to finish their cups), there will be an open round robin of friendlies until the season starts again, with a limit on the number of games allowed. Teams will be allowed to play enough games to take them up to a total of 8 games for the whole season (that means 3 friendlies for most teams). Any teams playing more than their allowed number of friendlies will receive a points deduction at the end of the next Conference stage. New teams hoping to join the next season will hopefully get involved during this stage and will be allowed to play as many games as they can in order to catch up to the rest of the league.

Post-Season
At the end of the season, there will be a draft to determine which teams end up in which conferences for the next season, with the champion from each conference last season taking turns to pick the teams. The conference that won the Inter-Conference Shield will get the first pick.
----------------------------------

I'd be interested to hear any feedback you have. Does it sound interesting/boring/not as new as I'd thought? Are there any glaring downsides I've failed to think about? Would you take part if it actually got off the ground (euro-timezones probably)?

i think the way ko tournaments work it might be a pain to do the bye thing, if possible at all. Besides that seems like a nice format if you get the people.

Thanks for the feedback. With creative use of filler teams and seeding, I think it is possible to do the byes, although it might turn out to be too much of a pain, as you say. I just felt there should be more of a reward for finishing top.

fillers always go on top, so the two byes would face each other in the semis.

You could always do separate tournaments but it's a little of a pain :D
