Card Hunter (Or D&D the card game)
So a game I've been following in it's development & am quite excited about has just come out in open beta. And while nothing like Bloodbowl, I'd imagine you guys might enjoy it. It's a card game that's kinda similar to D&D and/or Warhammer/Warcraft in it's artstyle & universe, and very similar to D&D in it's story. With options to play against human opponents in a 1v1 game.

If you're interested the website is http://www.cardhunter.com/

And this is a link to a youtube video showing some of the features & how it plays out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMIY9xcvtYg

Feel free to enjoy or ignore to your hearts content. :)

What do you think of it? What are some of it's flaws?
Posted by FredAstaire on 2013-09-13 07:04:31
I really like it. It seems really solid, the progression & story seem solid so far and actions & abilities make sense fluff wise and nothing seems unbalanced. The whole 'your characters items provides you with your 'deck'' is unique & works quite well I think. Added to that, I haven't seen any bugs yet & the entire game has quite a good level of polish to it (i.e. all the animations feel smooth, no audio/visual problems, no discernible lag)

As for flaws, it's a type of card game & will be pay2win for multiplayer. But every card game is. I think the way it's designed might counteract that a little & provide a little balance, but having not played too much multiplayer, can't say for definite.

Being a student, I don't(/can't) spend money on f2p games, but for those that do, the price levels don't have many 'steps' between low cost & high cost payments, so that could be annoying.

Also, as it's an online game, there is loading screens as data is going to/from the server, however these seem to be fairly minimal & quick so far.

In a nutshell, a quite enjoyable game, fairly unique. Particularly fun if you've ever played D&D because it's heavily influenced from there :)

from what i played in beta its not too very pay to win. youll get the in game money for free to "buy" a high level starter pack only for multiplayer. you can pay to win but you can still easily just play more. its very fun.. save up all the free giveaway in game money to unlock the "treasure" quests and youll be fine.

i thought it was fairly simple. the most entertaining part was naming my dwarf fighter Jan-Erik.

Nice i love the old school design.

I could see this in physical form, basic set would include enough cards to play several levels and add-ons could include items/spells/familiars/henchmen etc. Having played Descent once it has a similar feel but then I havent tried the multi-player aspect of the site yet.

Thanks for sharing. TC Dalfort

Can you use the items/cards you unlock in campaign in multiplayer?
Posted by happygrue on 2013-09-13 13:49:42
Yes, items are shared between single and multiplayer, and I agree that you don't have to pay to do well under the current setup. It is a fun game, and the SP theme is enjoyable. After you go through it once, you can come back around and complete quests for rare items, things like using only priests, or all characters being lower level and such.

Multiplayer is quite nice - fixed 20 minute chess clock for each player (no pausing) and you play for victory points which you get for killing characters or controlling a majority of the victory locations (so there's no turtling).

Worth your time to check it out at the very least I'd say, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

Is there a max of 3 characters per side?

Sounds and looks awesome. Thanks for pointing it out to me! :-)

Team pony-tail ftw! ;-D

Team pony-tail ftw :P

As for HM, yes there is a max of 3 characters in a mission, however you can have multiple characters and create seperate parties & swap them around. Even, as happygrue said you can go back and play with an 'all-cleric' squad & other fun stuff :)

As for whether it's 3 characters in Multiplayer? Well, the only MP games I've played have had 3 chars, but I've only played against the AI. I would assume so because otherwise more characters would become a bit OP & the games would last forever. (When you play MP, you're characters health & skill slots are as if they are max level giving balance (to the force) to games, but when you've skilled them up & earned items you get bigger & better loot -> cards)

I tried to make sense but I made a rambling mess instead, aha. Give it a go & you'll see what I mean, it's free after all so you don't have to commit :)

nice one. and apparently people even like it - the queue for logging on is currently 20 minutes. i doubt they will keep people interested if the servers are not powerful enough. ;-P

but a well made game, thx Fred

Well I've joined and all, and having multi player is cool, however:

"As for HM, yes there is a max of 3 characters in a mission, however you can have multiple characters and create seperate parties & swap them around. Even, as happygrue said you can go back and play with an 'all-cleric' squad & other fun stuff :)"

This really makes it a poor mans Japanese tactical RPG. In all honesty Vandal hearts on the PS1 from 20 years ago is streets ahead.

@Blizz:
They just shut down to deal with the problem. Only appeared today it seems, so I'd see that as a rather quick response (if it works). :-)

By the way: I registered as "Rabe". ;-)

What it does well is blend some simple deckbuilding mechanics with simple tactical mechanics to make a game that is simple and easy to handle, but has a fair amount of depth for being so easy to play. You are not going to break your brain with the strategic depth BUT you can sit and think and collect items and put thought into constructing your party, and the game itself is fast and enjoyable. I enjoyed the Beta quite a bit, and I will go through it again for the multiplayer, though I'm going to wait a bit for the servers to recover from the initial rush.

Hi, another question. I couldn't work out how to play multiplayer at all. I thought I could take my campaign party and go multiplayering. This doesn't seem to be the case.

It looks like you have to pay real money to even start playing multiplayer. Is this the case? Or am I missing something? Without paying money, I don't seem to have a crew.
Posted by FredAstaire on 2013-09-14 14:02:50
Yeah, those are like 'pre-constructed decks' for people who want to pay money to play MP without building up characters in single player . . . In the multilayer menu there should be a castle icon in the top right hand corner. While there you drag and drop your own characters into a party. And viola you're ready to go
Posted by happygrue on 2013-09-14 15:27:28
In Multiplayer, all characters are level 18, so if you're party is not that level yet, the morph you into level 18. If you don't have gear for that yet, you are going to get kicked in the teeth. So the way to do that is to play SP first, and either work your way up, OR you can buy the starter decks. In the beta, they gave out some pizza slices in the SP game to give you a taste - save all those regardless of what they tell you to buy, and instead buy the starter decks if you want to play MP earlier. In the beta you'd get a total of 200 or so pizza slices by about level 10 IIRC.
Posted by happygrue on 2013-09-14 15:30:00
That gives you a bunch of gear you can use, the characters you can recruit or whatever and mix and match - the point of the starter decks is to give you a bunch of higher level gear fast.

I saved up those free slices for 2-3 starter decks and started playing MP when my party was about level 10-12 in the single player game and I had enough gear to do quite well.
