Lacking the killer instinct
I have an evening routine. I put the kids to bed, I activate in Box, and then either I play Medecins Sans Frontieres or Don't PoMB Me, Bro!

Success has been varied; last night I managed to squeeze out a 1-1 draw vs Kondor, having expected to get trounced. Didn't enjoy it that much.

Tonight, I had one goal, to get his freakish malingering rotter, Angsgar, to come out of his dugout and play a turn. Everything else was irrelevant, and I expected to get punished for choosing to receive in the first half, but miracles happened: rotters were smashed to bits or sent off all over the place, I got to piss about with a bit of elfball to build SPP on my quarterback, the wonderful Sausages, and then I managed to score.

Second half, with a good run of KOs, it was hard to stop a quick score.

And then I had the choice - run away and hide and probably repeat the 1-1 from last night, rob a bit more CR and creep back towards the elusive 150, or run like a clown towards the end zone and gamble that a 2d block with a reroll wouldn't kill one of my beastelves.

Probably should have played more conservatively, inched forward and tried to score, but went for the stupid option, and then managed to lose 2-1 when Angsgar blitzed away a beastman and a Bloater caught a hand off and GFId twice without dying.

But I'm going to bed happy tonight. Is this proof that I just don't have the cold-blooded nature required to succeed, or to point out that there's better things to do with your life that maximise CR, and that you don't need to win in the Box to be satisfied? (Or of course it could just be rationalisation after the fact :-) )

Why can't it be both?

Happy hunting!

There is no CR, enjoy one game at a time.
Posted by MattDakka on 2020-08-20 12:17:18
What's important is having goals to pursue.
It can be CR, winning, messing around and playing for fun, or trying new players' builds.
Personally, I find logical trying to earn CR playing in a competitive division (playing for fun it's better in League), but your goals may be different.
If you had fun with that game, all well and good. :)
If you want more people to watch you, though, consider that there is a certain degree of correlation between number of spectators and CR.
Legends are generally watched by more spectators than Rookies, so, if you are interested in having spectators, trying to get more CR is a mean to achieve it, not just an abstract number.
I like to have spectators, because the game experience can be shared and there is more fun with crowd making noises.
The fact people watch my game adds more value and fun to my game (mind, spectators are not necessarily fans, they can be haters, the important thing is being watched by somebody).
There is pleasure in disappointing haters when you win despite their boos. :)
Also, playing for fun is easy, the real challenge is playing to win.
Since playing to win is harder than playing for fun, that should be considered a more important goal to achieve, if you want a challenge.
If you don't then don't care about CR at all.

I think it is good that you are asking the question. We can all learn from being introspective. But it is hard to draw a definitive conclusion from two games. Perhaps you had a nicer dinner on the blog writing day and that is the true source ;)

What works for me is to try to recognise what type of mood I am in before I start to play. Some days playing to win is what will bring me happiness, some days it is pixel hugging. Some days I'm in such a mood that it is impossible that BB will bring me happiness and I shouldn't play at all.

One thing I might add though is to think how you can align how you want to have fun with that of your opponent. I think people who are trying to win will have more fun playing against an opponent who is trying to win too. Conversely if you want to create the greatest passing tomb guardian of all time, you and your opponent might have more fun if they are on the same wavelength. A consequence might be that if there was a social expectation that Box was the place for the most try hard players, then that might not be the best place to pursue alternative fun.

MrCushtie: "What is best in life?"

MattDakka: "To crush your enemies, to see their CR drop before you, and to hear the lamentation of their pixels"

btw. I only spectate Dakka's games to see the hilarious things said in chat, I don't rate the play very highly.
Posted by MattDakka on 2020-08-20 18:50:51
Considering that Rbthma is a 50% win rate Box Star, I take his judgment of my gameplay as hilarious as my chat.
Posted by Kondor on 2020-08-20 18:51:40
Well, I always play for enjoyment.

Most importantly, I love to play coaches like MrCushtie simply because the chat is fun.

I laugh as my players go sploosh. I laugh when Ansgar actually had to take the field. (He always hides at the end of the bench.) I will smile when he is finally killed. (Likely by a Prominant Vegan) I really laughed in shock when that Nurgle Warrior named Jokaero made 2 GFIs in T15 just to get in range to score and then actually caught the handoff and scored in T16.

I frankly don't care about CR, Wins vs Losses, or Pixels. In my mind I try to stay in character. Coaches like Cushtie make it even more enjoyable.

Playing "to win" and playing "for fun" are not mutually exclusive concepts.
Posted by MattDakka on 2020-08-20 20:39:39
And in that case (win = fun) you can measure your fun with CR points and win rate.

Read the statement again.

"And in that case (win = fun) you can measure your fun with CR points and win rate."

this is the most dakka moment ever... there's a guy in one of my leagues who has won 5 of 76 games, but he draws more specs, is more fun to talk to and probably has more fun playing bb than dakka. this fixation on numbers is both hilarious and sad at the same time. as is the broken record chat commands dakkabot has.

yesterday i had a great game against jackh, elf on elf, 1-1 tie, two very different halves with a couple of mistakes on both sides, hilarious elf shenanigans and a nice little chat on top. in no way or form i would have had more fun if i somehow won this or got some precious CR POINTS/WINRATE PERCENTAGE.

You can have a nice chat AND be a good coach as well, they are not mutually exclusive concepts.

By the way comparing a private league to one-off box games is not correct.
People could watch the noob guy just to see if a player on the opponent team is injured, and they have to play vs that team, or just to watch 2 not official teams playing.
Hard to win CR points in League division, by the way. Of course you don't play for CR if you can't win CR in that division, no surprise.
I guess the fun comes mainly from playing weird unofficial teams.
Anyway, when people have low CR/win rate they tend to dismiss CR/win rate as not important. It comes as no surprise, when you can't achieve something, either you ignore it or you say it has no value.
You would have more credibility if you were a Legend and dismissed CR, but since you are not a Legend, you dismiss it.
Fox and grapes story.
If you don't play for CR fine, but don't criticize coaches better than you who care about it.

if you want to talk numbers (sort of redundant, there's nothing else you talk about) im 1/1/0 against you :*
Posted by MattDakka on 2020-08-21 15:20:16
A meaningful sample size of 2 games with unbalanced SL teams, you know statistics well!
What about playing in the Box with official teams sometimes?

On the radio this morning I heard someone talking about the US Supreme Court. They said "they wear black robes" at least a dozen times in answers to questions ranging from "Why aren't judges political" to "How should they interact with other branches" to "Should we appoint more". It felt similar to conversations on fumbbl where regardless the topic, MattDakka will find a way to 1) make sure everyone knows that blackbox is better and 2) make sure that everyone knows that he is better.

As to the original topic before getting sidetracked by Matt, I think Kondor said it very well. This is a game with random numbers, pixels and millions of dollars in prize money. Oh wait sorry, no prize money or any other meangingful impact on your life. If you aren't having fun why play. The both players on my Do Not Play list are on their not because they are good/bad coaches, cheaters, turn 16 foulers or anything else. They are on their because the games vs them aren't fun (no matter who wins) and I don't want to waste my time.

A few minutes ago I played a game I deserved to lose because I took a couple of stupid risks because of "fun". They failed and cost me a couple of scores. Then on turn 16 the opposing coach did the same only to watch one of the top 5 all-time passers in yardage and numbers roll snakes and drop the ball where I could (fairly) easily get it and tie the score. Completely undeserved win but we both enjoyed it and the drama from the turn 16 blitz on his passer was even more interesting than the game result.
