Check into dosbox
Its a dos emulator that may allow you to play older games that are too technologically backwards for modern pcs

I would go for a PS I. It should cost some bucks and should be better experience than PC version.

Also, while we're on the idea of just getting a Playstation, there are good psx emulators out as well. ePSX for example is the one I use. If you have Playstation games, it can run those from disk as well, or simply iso images.

But, emulation will likely be the answer you need

I thought the newer versions of Windows have 'compatibility modes' that can be used to improve compatibility with older software. Have you tried enabling those? I think you can enable them in the properties for the .exe file. What happens when you try to play it?

Otherwise, Dosbox is the emulator for MS-Dos-era games; although this one looks like it is Windows-era, so would probably be too recent for that. I believe 'Wine' is the emulator for older versions of Windows, but haven't tried it myself.

Final fantasy 7 wasn't working on mine. Downloaded latest Directx. Works a treat. FF VII > FF VIII ; )

for such reasons i kept my old windows xp / windows 7 pc with its dual operating system.
