My Table top league decided to give the Narrow Tier rules a spin. We had our first league night this past Sunday, and I was able to get in two games. While not exactly earth shattering I found both games informative.
My first round was Humans, against Goblins. While I was able to control the pacing of the game quite well, once I scored, and several weapons were ejected, I found myself unwilling to score again. In spite of having the option to score, I had to weigh the gain, vs. the possibility of the ejected secret weapons returning.
In the end it was a moot point, as none of the weapons made a second appearance, but the threat certainly altered my approach to the game.
My second round was even more eye opening. Humans, again, vs. Orcs. With the Narrow Tier changes Orcs have a tough decision at the start. All positionals, and two re-rolls, or drop a positional for the third re-roll. In the end, my opponent went for the full roster, and was blessed with a number of Cheering Fans and Brilliant Coaching kick off rolls to keep him in re-rolls. I did notice that his play style was much more reserved, harboring re-rolls, and not committing himself to even slightly risky play. This, combined with some good dice on my part allowed me to skate to a 3-0 victory.
Our next league night should be interesting, as we have a Khemri, and Ogre team taking the pitch. Both having benefited from the Narrow Tier treatment. I'm curious to see if Ogres, with the significant buffs to the snotlings are playable.
As for the Humans, I found the AV buff to the catcher making me more willing to commit to tougher play. Knowing that he was a little more resilient I sent him on a number of break away plays with only a single supporting player. While this might not have been the safest route to take, I found it to be a comfort that I wasn't putting an expensive AV 7 piece in harms way. He did take a few hits, but stayed on the field the entire game, avoiding a few armor breaks thanks to the buff. While I don't think this will make humans into a top tier team, I think it's a much needed, and appreciated, bonus.
