Getting fit
The other day something odd happened to me. I was down at the liquor store buying some booze (rum as it happened) and the guy behind the counter recognised me - he was one of my Karate instructors in the early 80s. This is when I was around 10 years old. No idea how he remembered me except that he said he remembered that I had 'red hair'.

So I thought that's as good an omen as any to start my long-awaited fitness campaign.

I had started to get back into the swing of it earlier in the year, but after I moved house in June I didn't have an area set up to exercise in. I've found a beach towel placed on the carpet in the corner of my room works OK. I can also open my sliding door because as I largely live, work, play BB and sleep in the one room (I share a house) it can get pretty smelly if I forget to air it.

So my chosen method is a constant circuit. Ideally every hour or two I take a few minutes to run through my exercises and note them down. This means that between bloodbowl matches, or chapters in whatever book I'm reading, or episode of CSI I'm watching I can get fit. But I have been pretty unimpressed with my performance tonight.

25 leg squats, 5 (five!) push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 50 toe-touches and 50 double-punches, followed by another 25 squats, was the best I could do without wrecking myself. I know I have a couple of dumb-bells around here somewhere, when I find them I'll add curls and vertical lifts (where you hold the weights and lift your arms straight from your hips to horizontal.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll do a lot better as I've passed the first hurdle.

Playing sports with coworkers and friends also really helps out. both Stinkytroll and I have joined soccer groups and are out there running our computer butts off!

I do most of my keeping fit by walking and cycling to get around :)

LOL, you've made my day mate.

I've just started trying to improve my fitness and was pretty disappointed.

If you really suck at push ups that much mate I would advise doing them on your knees. Doing 5 regular push ups wont give you as much benefit as doing 10 on your knees ;)

THis was sort-of on my knees!

I've never been ultra-fit (at least not since I was a rower at school) but I used to be able to do 50 sit-ups and push-ups without too much trouble.

Oh! :(

Well, I know a bit about fitness - I was Royal Marines Commando for 4 years :)

If you've never been particularly into fitness one of the hardest and most important things is motivation. The best way to ensure you get the results you want is have clear goals and a set routine.

I'd recommend that once a week you "go all out" and do your maximum reps on the 5 exercises you described (as they seem to be a fairly good balance and if you are already doing them I suspect they are the exercises you prefer). Then record your results (and possibly post them on here!).

Having a weekly goal and (hopefully) seeing an improvement should help motivate you.

Good Luck mate :)

Like Arktoris said, I've been trying to play as much soccer as can fit into a week. My high school didn't even have the sport and I love it. When I first started going out and kicking the ball around I had a dual purpose of trying to get exercise and eating better. But as of recently I've fallen off the wagon as far as eating right is concerned, I can't escape the call of the donut shop I walk past on my way to work in the morning :( LOL

Wow are my thighs sore - they have been for a couple of days - but I am now able to do 50 squats every hour or so if I can remember.... plus a lot more of the 1/2 push-ups (I can manage 25 at a go if I am rested) and leg-raises (these are the ergonomically superior sit-ups where you lie horizontally, brace yourself (or not) and raise your legs a short distance from the ground and hold it there if you're able to).

And eating right is difficult too - I decided that I wouldn't eat anything outside of home (except sit-down restaurant or cafe meals) which should eliminate most of the junk food. So when I stick to it I get hungry at home all the time... Maybe I should be seriously dieting as well. Nothing wrong with a steamed rice, cucumber wholemeal sandwich only diet. I've done it before and if you stick to it you can lose heaps of weight.
