the timeout strategy

fumbbl is great. i get to play with coaches who have experienced hundreds of matches before, have seen thousands of elfish touchdowns and millions of goblins getting squished.
most times i get my ass handed and have to be glad if i get a close defeat. yet, we learn.
yesterday i experienced a new pro strategy.
it seems that sometimes after the client disconnects for one coach, the actual turntimer keeps counting in the other coach's client. after resuming to the game, the icons loaded for me and first it seemed like the other coach already left the game himself. some minutes of waiting later suddenly the other coach showed up and.. forced timeout.
my orcs lost the opportunity to move their turn and the other team scores a super early first touchdown.
foul play in my opinion and a bitter taste for the rest of the match. during these moments in the fumbbl universe something happened in real life. a grown up man has to explain his grown up female flatmate that he can't join social activity now because he is playing a boardgame with his computer. "well, if that's worth it"

thank you to 63 other teams that were able to beat me without the need for a forced timeout, even in those games where i really needed more than 4 minutes to move.
it is really appreciated.

lol. Foul stuff. BB turns people crazy!

Happened to me as well 2-3 times. On one occasion i rightfully called the guy names and got myself banned rightfully.

I think this is against the rule - but im not sure. Also not sure if there is any way for the admins to proof it.

Silly cheating computer nerds :(

Rated 6 for the awesome picture at the top of the page :D

Contact the admins to sort things like that out.

As said, this is indeed against site rules and should be reported.

Exploiting disconnects is against the rules, just report him.
Posted by mekutata on 2015-06-02 10:53:30
I reported it. Yet I wanted to use the opportunity of the blog to share my general joy in this gaming community.
The atmosphere in the games is very nice, seasoned coaches give advise, younger coaches enjoy the competition, people in chat or forum react quickly to rule questions.
This was really the black ship while in online gaming in general cheating, exploiting and harassing seems to be an unavoidable plague.

Very well written and entertaining, also the picture is quite awesome indeed.

Im sure people got the intention.

Funniest complain/ rant post in a while. :)

It happened to me during a Khemri vs Chaos game.
My opponent disconnected during my turn, I waited for him, then when he came back he timed me out.
I reported him and the match was cancelled.

I time people out if they are taking 4 minute turns (not stepped away or disconnected or some such). I will make exceptions for a very new coach. For the overwhelming majority of coaches, though: it's in the game rules, and every coach should expect it.
Posted by Cavetroll on 2015-06-02 15:41:27
pubstar, this wasn't one coach taking 4 minute turns. There was a disconnect, and the timer kept running for the other coach. Who exploited it.
Posted by licker on 2015-06-02 15:41:31
Unless the client freezes when someone disconnects why do you wait for your opponent to come back?

Just finish your turn, let them deal with it when they get back.

Of course... side step, stand firm, pass block, ... there are some events which will keep the game from moving, but I thought that your clock doesn't run on an opponents choice.

@Cavetroll

Absolutely, in the case above it should not have been a timeout. I wasn't very clear with my message. I ignored that part of the blog, because many others had already echoed the correct sentiment of 'find an admin, this is wrong'.

I meant to address the last bit "even in those games where i really needed more than 4 minutes to move."

If you are actively playing and take a 4 minute turn, you should expect a timeout, and it isn't bad sportsmanship to do so.

I've only ever timed someone out once.
There was no disconnect, the guy just hadn't moved any players for 10 minutes.
I even gave him a warning at the 4 minute mark that I'd time him out if he hit the 8 minute mark.

I end my next turn, and then another 4 minute timeout happens, just as he returns to his computer, pissed off that I timed him out. I'm sorry, but if you AFK with no warning, and I wait 10 minutes for you to play (warning included), then I should be well within my rights to time you out. Fortunately, by this point, I just had one more turn to play before the end of the game. Went ahead and scored (the time out really didn't change the game, I won 3-0), and then had to not laugh when he rage quit as soon as the match uploaded.

This has nothing to do with mekutata, it just seemed the right place to vent.

Dont you have to wait 15 minutes ?

Didn't even know there was a timeout button ??
Posted by Antithesisoftime on 2015-06-02 21:25:23
you wait 15 minutes on a disconnect.
In the case of my one timeout, this was not a disconnect. It was simply a player vanishing from his keyboard with no warning, and being gone for near to 20 minutes
Posted by Roland on 2015-06-02 22:09:52
Isn't it possible to complete the turn even if the oppo leaves?
Posted by frogboy on 2015-06-02 23:38:19
@Antithesisoftime, Dude he probably just went to have a crap or something, ain't you some kind of time lord anyway ? Lol :D

If your opponent leaves then they have conceded, unless it's a disconnect, either way you can't just finish the turn.
Posted by Arktoris on 2015-06-03 05:01:12
a timeout should not happen if there are issues.

however, the button should only be pressed to prevent a timeout, not enforce one. Reverse its function.

Too many spoiled brats think they are entitled to take as long as they please at the other coach's expense. They throw a tantrum when the rules are upheld.
Posted by licker on 2015-06-03 05:33:22
@roland

yes, it should be, but i have encountered situations where the game freezes, but the clock keeps on ticking, it's rare though

Posted by paradocks on 2015-06-03 06:24:34
I try to wait for my opponent to reconnect as I've experienced bugs when in the middle of a turn and opponent rejoins (iirc i chose blitz action, opponent then rejoined after i'd started my move but when my player couldn't block to complete his blitz). Also had an opponent perform a timeout on me after a disconnection.
Posted by paradocks on 2015-06-03 06:29:42
I think it's pretty low trying to win a match by timing somebody out.

eg. you know opponent is selecting his last player to move and pickup the ball but you hover the mouse over timeout hitting your buttons as quick as you can hoping to just catch the other coach half a second before he can select move and complete his turn. I wouldn't get angry or upset about it, but it's very very poor form in my opinion.

Thanks for the fun writeup: your attitude about the whole thing is commendable. =D
Posted by pythrr on 2015-06-03 19:55:58
entirely illegal

timing out someone who is obviously AFK (i.e. has not moved in 2 or 3 mins) is illegal

report them and they'll get TEH BANHAMMAH
Posted by pythrr on 2015-06-03 19:57:11
however, re: paradock's point, if you are f-ing around for 4 mins and moving things really slowly, I will time yr ass out at 4.01.
