One of these days ...
... when I seriously contemplate if I should stop playing bloodbowl altogether. What happenend? Not that much. I just lost 3 league play-off or Cup games in a row (though only 2 today), suffered 15 vs. 1 cas in these games, several key players were killed, and I feel diced (justified or not). I played enough games to know that these or even worse things happen, I know I am a bad loser, and maybe I am a pixelhugger too. However, 90% of the last 4-5 hours or so that I spent playing bb I had no fun at all. I was just annoyed, and the anger increased with every additional cas suffered, ball lost, game lost. Even though none of the teams is done due to the player losses, even though it was league, even though all my opponents are nice guys I normally (should) enjoy playing against. I like(d) playing in all 3 leagues (OBBA, OWCC, and WIL) and outright recommend all of them. But these leagues all are between seasons atm, and maybe I should take the opportunity to say goodbye, to the leagues and the site. I won't do it this evening, well aware how many others regretted rage-quits and team retirements shortly afterwards. But way to often I thought to myself (and couldn't resits to whine in chat): it sucks badly. That's not how it's meant to be, is it? That's not how I should spend my leisure time.

Feel free to rub it in with boos, 1 ratings and "too much emo" comments. It may be the appropriate reaction, at least for the tough and battle-hardened among you. I needed to write this anyway, not least to make up my mind whether to go or stay.

I know the feeling.

When playing starts to feel like a chore it's time to stop, winning or losing.

I had similar feelings earlier this year. I was playing a fair ammount, infact spendign as much of my free time playing as I could manage, I dont play in the League's you mentioned but I did/do play Ranked, BlackBox, 145 League and at the time my own League - Lineman Club.

At the time my attitude was very much leaning towards the 'I want to win' and I ofcourse didn't very often (if ever). I wondered why I was so CRP and a kind guy (dont remember hs name now) told me about 145 rookie League and put a word in with the Commish for me, I didn't play there as much as I'd have liked because by the time I was getting into my 2nd season there I was getting my own Group together on here. The League I created was designed to be fun, however there was some highly skilled coaches involved and coaching teams of Linemen is a disadvantage to begin with and more so for the inexperianced!..

So, as you can imagine, I quickly got frustrated, I tried not to express that too much or often and be a happy opponant, however those feeling of frustraion were bubbling inside me and one day (in january) I snapped, I closed my fumbbl browser tab and honestly didnt look back for months, I sneaked a peak once or twice without loggin in to see how it felt and I was soon gone agian. My group is almost in a state of disrepair because of my leaving and I do regret not handling that better.

BUT, taking that break was probably the best thing I did as a coach, at least for keeping my sanity anyway. I've written about it before but I used to chop'n change teams regularily (still doing it :P LOL ) because I wanted to win and was looking for the 'perfect' team/roster - never found it. I bought a copy of Cyanides Chaos edition back last year in December, I managed to wrestle myself to try a couple of games in April this year I think, and obviously it wasn't long before I came crawling back home :D

The point is this tho, we don't play sport to lose, we ploay to win, everyone who is a fan of sports/teams/players ect. want their favorites to win, if they dont win then there is somthing considered to be wrong, nobody is ever really happy to lose. So in order to be happy to lose one does need to change ones attitude towards winning/loseing, it isnt easy to do and I aint the man to tell you how to do things yourself, my way was to coach a goblin team (on Cyanide) not somthing I had seriously conssidered before, I had made teams but wasnt really into them, now however I have a better understanding of being happy when loseing, maybe it is the Goblins charm but it worked for me (at least enough to get me playing again!)

Good luck to you and I hope your decisions are good :)

Well just the obvious:

Don't retire any teams even if you decide to take a break!

Hope you get the joy back, now or after a break. :)

"...I'm going to cut you into little pieces"

This a CPOMB thread right? :D

Don't retire any teams. If you want to take a season off do that. A lot of leagues will let the team come back if the team does not play any games outside the league.

Winning is nice but at blood bowl it won't make you any money. If won't get you a more beautiful wife or increase the size of your todger.

Your win% is 62%. Way too high. Aim to keep it below 57/58% You'll feel happier for it. ;)

Flings & goblins will help you there.

Go ARR!

If you have other ways of spending your time then taking a break for a while can be good.
Keep on playing Blood Bowl in a state of rage and frustration is not good for your nerves and can make you play worse than usual.
When you are more relaxed you will see things better.

Take a break.

Come back when you think just playing the game will be fun, regardless of result ... that's when you will be ready to return.

... or just play Stunty for a bit!
Posted by MattDakka on 2014-06-26 01:38:19
Nah stunty is too random and there are too many cherrypickers for an unranked division, not to mention clawpombers in squig herder teams.
If you want clawpombers it's better playing in the Box.
:D

We have all been there. I know the feeling as I am on the biggest low I've had for several years. Take care and return when you get your head on straight.

Every normal person who plays here has or will feel this way at some point in time, so you are in good company :)

Take a break. Games should be fun and should be stopped when they aren't.

This happens to me too, take a break come back and you will rediscover your love for the site :)

/boo, 1, too much emo... ;-)

Drop a league or two, maybe even all three for a season or two.

Make a fun team and play them occasionally, Ranked or Box, whichever your poison (or, one in each division so you can line up ranked games if the box doesn't schedule, or vice versa). Aim to develop the team in a fun/interesting/different way, rather than just hoping to win at all costs.

Failing that, play goblins... all the weapons... use them at all cost. It can't fail to cheer you up! :-D

wait. wait more.

Play for fun. I was getting that way at one point, then switched to pretty much only playing novelty team builds - flings, all zombie, all lino etc. The fun's back for me, and my CR is something I utterly ignore now. The only relevance it seems to have is whether or not others are willing to play against you :D
Posted by TFRiley on 2014-06-26 13:06:13
Yeah, play for fun. Going full retard on moves, trying the utmost daft stunts to score makes the game a hella lot of fun (for me). Ok, there are games where half your team is sidelined and the oppo is hauling your ass, but in return you get some precious moments to savor like picking up and dodging through 4 TZ long bombing half the pitch and make the 2 GFI's to score (did I mention I play elves :) ).

Don't hesitate to take a break. I have had quite a few terrible run of results followed by team retirements which could have been avoided by taking a break before.

Obba is great.

The thing about L team play is that win draw or lose, the story of your team goes on. Revel in the glorious victories, but also in the defeats; both area part of the tapestry of life. :)

Also, obba is great.

from years of being a football fan, i am aware of people getting emotional and heated during a match.

that being said, you are a grown man. stop biting people. its not that much to ask if you think about it. just play football.

All been said?

Take a break. And if these feelings are present more often than being stated here or you can cope with....yeah, as k. stated either reduce your winning ratio (pushing it too much will stress you....in any possible scenario...) or quit.

Good blog post. This is a great game and that's it. O/
