Painting Blog - Star Players
With the ogres completed and the Fumbbl dice not yet having arrived (should be very soon) I had a rare bit of free painting time.

The first item to work on was a commitment to paint up a member of the TFF legacy team. This gives me a chance to paint up a star player on my list, often with interesting colour schemes or bases.

The team this year was Khorne and I picked Scyla as I already had a model converted and ready to go. It was a very simple conversion using the classic WHFB Scyla model. To this I added a loin cloth and shoulder pad from the chaos range along with some knee pads.

The colours for the team were classic khorne being red, black and brass. Scyla is described as having red skin, as this would be most of the model I didn’t paint anything else red. Looking at the paint scheme of the new version of Scyla on the GW site his skin was a few different shades of red. His chest was lighter, having more orange whilst his back was a much deeper shade. I liked how this looked and did the same for my model, his chest and inner arms and legs gradually got lighter. His mouth and tongue were painted a deep pink.

The rest of the team colours would be on the small bits of armour and clothing he wore. These were painted black with brass edging. Looking at examples of brass online it appeared to be darker and duller than gold. I’ve been experimenting with mixing metallic paints with the NMM technique, so adding brown, yellow and white to gold paint or grey to silver for shading and highlights.

For brass I added dark brown to bronze for shading and then added brown and white along with a mid-gold for highlights. It turned out pretty well on his collar, less so on the shoulder pad. I still find it hard to work out how to do shading and highlights to fit in with NMM.

The last part was deciding what colour to paint his scales, spines and claws. These covered a large amount of the model and were very prominent so I didn’t want anything that would clash with the red and black. For his scales and spines I started with black and added red and grey for the highlights, going quite light on the sharpest points. His teeth and claws were painted brown and white was added for highlights to differentiate.

Final touches was adding snow to the base over some desolate earth and my coach and his name to the base.

Scyla only took a couple of weeks, which left me time to paint more stars before the dice arrived.

I’m just 7 away from having completed all the crp stars and 5 of them are already built and ready to paint. One of these was the Mighty Zug, I had the 5th edition version which I think still looks good and copes with the scale creep better than most of the older players.

I thought the traditional blue, white and yellow colour of the Reikland Reavers would be just me copying someone else’s work and decided to mix things up a bit. I went back to an older colour scheme previously used on an orc team, dark red armour with mid grey clothing, but added dirty white for contrast.

His skin was given a mid brown base coat and then Bugman’s glow and Cadian fleshtone were added for highlights. This gave him a very tanned skin tone, I’ve been experimenting with different skin colours for humanoid models to add a bit more variety to my painting. I spent the most time on his face as it is very detailed and expressive. Initially he was going to have stubble on his face and head, but none of the washes or highlights applied looked as good as the clean shaven look.

Next was his shirt, this started with a brown base coat so it would look old and a bit dirty. The shading used on white can make a real difference to how it looks. Blue is good for things like angelic wings, green for more natural themed models, brown for dirty white or fresh bone and grey for old bone.

White edging shaded in the same was added to his armour to break up the red.

His armour was painted deep red with a few sparing orange highlights on the very edges. Other details were painted brown or black, since the model is really unique he didn’t need a lot of decoration to show he was a star and that didn’t seem appropriate for Zug.

A few areas of detail were added, using the mixed NMM metals for the gold chain, eagle on his belt and knuckledusters. A tribal tattoo was painted on his right shoulder as it looked a bit bare.

I really liked how the colour scheme worked for Zug and decided to use that for Griff as well. Griff has only his face exposed with the rest of his body covered in armour or clothing, but he does have more decoration on that armour. With much of the model either dark grey or red, he needed some spots of brightness in addition to his face.

I painted the armour and clothes in the same way as Zug. Most of the armour didn’t have borders sculped on and instead I painted the edge of some plates white.

The biggest difference was all the decorative additions to Griff’s armour, these consisted of wings on his knee pads, and an eagle on his chest and helm along with knuckle dusters. All these were painted gold, mixing browns and yellows with the gold paint in a NMM style with white highlights. It worked better on some parts than others, I feel I am getting better at this technique, but still struggle with working out the lighting.

Since I’d found a colour scheme I liked and had 1 more human star to do I also decided to paint the 2nd edition Helmut in red, grey and gold.

He had a body suit that covered most of the model and I was worried he might end up a bit bland. Luckily the armour on his body all had borders, which were ideal to paint white to add a bit of contrast to the rest of the model.

As he's a star I painted his shoulder pads and visor gold, again using the NMM metallics technique. It turned out well on his visor, but less so on the shoulder pads.

Some of your best painting to date. How do you do those bases? They look amazing!!!!

Looks great indeed. I don't know how spubbbba did it of course, but if I were to replicate it, I'd do something like this:

1. A "pavement" rolling pin from greenstuffworld for the base stone pattern, and some generic grit (maybe a texture paint, maybe PVA + small sand) for the brown base layer. Paint brown, add a wash layer (nuln oil + agrax earthshade perhaps), 1-2 passes of drybrushing for depth

2. PVA + mixed colours of green coloured gravel (diy maybe? Or perhaps there's something ready-made you can buy). This looks like at least 3 tones of green gravel.

3. Add the tufts (again, finding a suitable size and colour from something ready-made).

Mind you, even if I did this, I'm sure spubbbba's result is 100x better than what I could manage. I'm terrible at bases :)

Thanks Garion.
I use Agrellan Badland to make the cracked earth and Agrellan earthshade for the lumpy parts, though fine sand would work just as well. This is painted dark brown with a mid brown and then very light bone drybrush.
I then paint the rest of the base green and glue flock onto it that I got from a model a shop a long time ago. Next the white pitch markings are painted on and finally I add patches of scorched grass from GW.

Superb again! Great painting and bases too.

Also I like that you give some tips on your technique and choices.

I really like the flock. It really suits the blood bowl style more than just all grass. Looks like you've got your white balance right on your camera too now.
