4 Month Ban
Luis Saurez was banned for 4 months.

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/luis-suarez-ban-fifa-statement-full-140000561.html

Do you agree with the punishment? Too easy or just enough?

I think FIFA have bitten off more than they can chew with this one...

BOOOOOOOM!
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 17:20:17
On a serious note, don't quote me, pretty sure his last ban was for 10 games. This time only 9? I know he gets 4 months no footy but 2 months of that will be training, holiday, etc.

Like I said, don't quote me :)
Posted by WhatBall on 2014-06-26 17:20:30
Not long enough. 1 year minimum, should be more.
Posted by gjopie on 2014-06-26 17:20:32
I think it is more than I expected from FIFA (if he stays at Liverpool, it amounts to a 22 match ban in total I think, plus he has to train on his own), but for a third offence I'd have given him more, personally.
Posted by Wreckage on 2014-06-26 17:22:11
he's missing the rest of the world cup.. seems fair enough.. if the ref would have seen him he probably wouldn't have gotten more than a 9 game ban either..

..also Germany - USA!!!!
US has the stars on the flag, Germany on the trikots!
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 17:22:57
He will stay at Liverpool I think as the 4 month thing includes administration also. So will have to wait till January transfer window anyway.
Posted by gjopie on 2014-06-26 17:24:25
I think FIFA have specifically said he is allowed to transfer. Not sure what "administration" means in that context, though!
Posted by Favalessa on 2014-06-26 17:32:16
i'd like fifa would also punish so hard the unsportmanlike conduct, simulation foul and reaction foul....
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 17:41:32
I think you are right gjopie, I read it wrong!
Posted by Overhamsteren on 2014-06-26 17:52:47
3 day ban for the bite, then throw in 2 days more for repeat offense. No one got hurt.

Oh well the football world have weird morals and conducts on many points...
Posted by gjopie on 2014-06-26 17:55:05
Overhamsteren: If I bit someone at my workplace because I was frustrated with them, I'd get much more than a 4 month ban, especially if I'd done it twice before!
Posted by fly on 2014-06-26 18:28:05
he's banned from attending stadiums to watch games as well!
Posted by Russo on 2014-06-26 18:41:46
To be honest it's not enough. Rio Ferdinand got a 12 month ban for just failing to attend a drugs test once. So to me for committing an actual assault is far worse and a third time too. To me it should have been in excess of a year.
Posted by Overhamsteren on 2014-06-26 18:56:44
Lol gjopie I'm sure you would get in trouble at your work place for doing pretty much anything that goes on during a football match...
Posted by WoodPusher on 2014-06-26 18:58:05
Isn't this naming and shaming ;)
Posted by sorat on 2014-06-26 19:02:33
100.000CHF? 82.252,62€? 111932.00$? This dinner costed him a bit... and he took a mouthful only! :D
Posted by garyt1 on 2014-06-26 19:04:10
Nothing weird about banning players for biting. For his 3rd time of being caught biting he should have a longer ban.
Posted by DukeTyrion on 2014-06-26 19:13:46
They wussed out on the domestic side.

The 4 months should start when the season kicks off, as it is half of it will be served when there isn't any football being played anyway!
Posted by Garion on 2014-06-26 19:18:09
should have been banned for life, 3 times now he has bitten someone, and he has been racist once on top of that. Ridiculous.
Posted by luxyluxo on 2014-06-26 19:32:30
If a Dog bites a human on 3 different occasions they are put down, at the minimum they should pull his teeth out so he can only gum people :)
Posted by MattDakka on 2014-06-26 19:37:26
He should have been ejected during the match, now it's late.
Posted by mrt1212 on 2014-06-26 19:59:11
I don't know why you expect him to not feed his bloodlust. You can only pass 2+ rolls so many times.
Posted by Endzone on 2014-06-26 20:24:22
You are not allowed to feed from opposition thralls so it was blatant cheating! He now has to miss the rest of the World Cup and Uraguay lose their best player - so the ban has some bite.
Posted by mrt1212 on 2014-06-26 20:25:57
We'll be here all week - try the veal!
Posted by Jeffro on 2014-06-26 21:11:33
CONE OF SHAME! CONE OF SHAME!

Make him wear the "Cone of Shame" so he can't bite himself or anyone else. Lifelong punishment!!
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 21:12:03
Player breaks opponents leg with horror tackle. Outrage, barely any. Ban, perhaps 3 games, maybe 4 if the FA are being strict.

Player has a nibble on another, leaves a little toothy dent... BAN HIM FOR LIFE HE'S SUCH AN EVIL BASTTARDO!!!!!
Posted by Garion on 2014-06-26 21:49:16
It's assault chainsaw. Players have spent time in prison for such things before , others have done community service, this is the 3rd time he has assaulted someone. And he racially abused someone. All against the law, all would see you fired from any other job.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 22:31:55
Oh cry me a river. It's not assault, not really. It's a bit pathetic, it's a bit strange, but assault? Crikey. You'd have us living in a society where looking at a women is rape and breathing too close to somebody gets a fine.

It's a competitive sport. Tempers fray. Shit happens. People get elbowed, bones broken, scarred, all sorts. A little bite is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

However... because it's weird, and because it's Saurez, all the moronic self righteous do gooders get to cry out how foul and barbaric and absolutely disgraceful ole Suarez is.

I'm not a Liverpool fan. I just am BORED by the whole faux outrage. Y'know, REAL bad stuff happens EVERY DAY and all the same "OH HOW EVIL OF YOU SUAREZ" brigade do NOTHING about it.
Posted by Overhamsteren on 2014-06-26 22:32:55
Oh yes, 3 horrible assaults that have left the victims physically and emotionally scarred for life!!!
Posted by diegomaradona on 2014-06-26 22:33:24
i call it bronca!

too much. yellow card if ref had spotted

suarez is the most talented man in the tourney. and we all know the italian team (remember what they done to zidane)so ban the italian team
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-26 22:36:13
You consent to getting elbowed etc when you agree to play football. You don't consent to being bitten.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 22:36:20
Y'know, I got shoved into a wall at 5-a-side. I had scrapes and bruises down my arm and legs, nearly broke a bone - bloody hurt.

Did I cry about assault? No. Was it malicious and unfair? Yes. I got a freekick. He got rebuked by our group. By the next time we played, it was forgotten. The Suarez nibble should really not be much different but people love to get on their high horses about these things to fill their empty little lives.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-26 22:37:36
And yeah biting is assault, how retarded are you?
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 22:38:24
> You consent to getting elbowed etc when you agree to play football.

Less than you, apparently.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-26 22:43:20
Well I was simplifying it so that someone like you could understand.
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 22:43:49
I play a fair bit of football. I do expect to get pushed against a wall at 5 a side, in fact I also do the same. I expect to get my shins mashed now and again. I don't however expect to get bitten. That, in my book, is a little outside the realms of expectation in football.

First, time fair enough, stupid error in the heat of the moment. 3 times?! Action needs to be taken.
Posted by akaRenton on 2014-06-26 22:46:41
I'm a Liverpool fan, and am constantly amazed by his ability and appalled by his utter stupidity. Guess Brendan will be shopping again, cant see Rickie Lambert filling the same kind of role for 9 games :(
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 22:49:58
I think this thread is now getting a little long in the tooth...

BOOOOOM AGAIN! :D
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 22:50:11
> That, in my book, is a little outside the realms of expectation in football.

Yeah, so is being punched in the face. What's the ban for that?
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 22:56:20
There should be one. I'm not contesting that.

For me it's not just about the action. He has a responsibility to act appropriately on 'the world stage' as do the other 'stars' of football. Sanctions for the same offence would be different to us. We are not being watched by millions of children.

Biting is not a 'usual' action, this I believe is why it is so high profile. A little like Zidane's head butt. Working in schools for 15 years now children generally stop biting by 5 years of age. Punching/kicking seems to be a natural physical reaction to most tense moment whatever the age.

Posted by pythrr on 2014-06-26 23:00:07
Chainsaw,

You on your own here. Biting is just one step worse than spitting on the football pitch. Its well out of order.

Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-26 23:02:30
Yeah biting is weird and is going to attract more attention than a punch, no doubt about that. However if he had whacked 3 guys in the face people would be talking about a big ban I am sure.
Posted by Throweck on 2014-06-26 23:04:21
Agreed Jimmy. :)
Posted by Wreckage on 2014-06-26 23:10:32
If biting isn't covered by football, it shouldn't result in an extended FIFA ban but a court trial for assault. As far as its within the realm of football it should be sanctioned as such.

In comparison to what punishments players usually recieve (usually actually none if you don't get a card) this is a very serious punishment considering he did not cause serious damage.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 23:13:58
A court trial!?! My word..........

It's no wonder we have such a massive public sector.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 23:17:51
> Its well out of order.

I... AGREE! \o/

It's just not so out of order that we need court trials, permanent bans, and all the other nonsense people are baying for. It's a drop in the ocean on the scale of bad things that go on in the world. It's just not worth the attention nor the punishments being spoken about. Even 4 months is OTT. Out of the World Cup + public shame is enough.

If only people felt so strongly about, y'know, the wars in Iraq etc where people are dying and we were lied to for profit by our politicians. People seem to be OK with that. Suarez bit somebody again? FIRING SQUAD!
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-26 23:20:53
My brother bit me more than once. I should call the po po.
Posted by Garion on 2014-06-26 23:24:49
People do feel strongly about all those things. But we aren't discussing them. We are discussing someone who should not be allowed to play football anymore. To do this means he has a serious mental problem and someone that has no control over his actions is a danger to fellow professionals. What happens if he gets the urge to gouge someone's eyes next time or fish hook someone. Does he have the self control to stop himself. His previous would suggest not.
Posted by Wreckage on 2014-06-26 23:26:08
try throwing a bomb during a football game and be sure the world will notice
Posted by Wreckage on 2014-06-26 23:33:58
it's a difference between what you do somewhere where nobody sees or notices it or if you do it life on tv before the eyes of 10s of millions of people ;)

Is that a good thing? I think yes, because.. You will never be able to stop all the evil in the world. But at the moment where somebody can step in front of a camera, do some evil and get away with it with some "other countries are worse" comment- /me stares at the US sourveillance- it is then when the general standard of what is acceptable gets lowered and damaged indefinatly.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-26 23:37:15
I hope Liverpool sell him - if not his next game is vs Newcastle lol.
Posted by selfy_74 on 2014-06-26 23:50:45
I'd have preferred him to do it two games sooner. Some people are so selfish.
Posted by garyt1 on 2014-06-27 00:29:06
Mike Tyson was a boxer and he lost his boxing license for biting. He did appeal but he stilled missed over a year. If they ban people in violent sports for biting then obviously they should in football.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-27 00:42:04
He shredded both of Evander Holyfield's ears. It's not the same.

Garion, you are a total lunatic. I sure as hell hope you are nowhere near any kind of council or able to influence our laws in any way. What a ridiculous position to take.
Posted by Dalfort on 2014-06-27 00:59:27
Football Laws are legally binding in a court of Law in Britain.

The Laws of the Game are defined set of rules that govern the playing and define Striking (or attempting to strike) as a dismissible offence under Law 12 Fouls and misconduct. As the referee missed the opportunity to dismiss Suarez, FIFA have applied a ban for the incident the world witnessed.

Those are facts. It should have been longer is my opinion as a FA qualified football coach.

If this was his first offence then maybe it is about right, but it is his third. He is an adult and his actions on a world stage should carry significant consequences. I also think the fine that accompanies the ban is ludicrously small I assume £66k to be around 2 weeks for him, which he will not miss one iota.
Posted by Dalfort on 2014-06-27 01:04:23
Just read in the link provided by Castleman;

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that:

- The player Luis Suárez is regarded as having breached art. 48 par. 1 lit. d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) (assault), and art. 57 of the FDC (an act of unsporting behaviour towards another player).

So they specifically mention "assault", Does that now mean the Italian defender could apply for a civil prosecution now?...
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2014-06-27 01:08:58
I don't know how much tax he will pay but surely it's less than one weeks wages(200k)?
Maybe yeah. Who employs Suarez at the WC? Fifa? Uruguay FA?
Posted by CastleMan on 2014-06-27 01:43:38
from years of being a football fan, i am aware of people getting emotional and heated during a match.

that being said, you are a grown man. stop biting people. its not that much to ask if you think about it. just play football.
Posted by Dalfort on 2014-06-27 01:43:53
I just googled his wage... 200k a week. the fine is 2 days money!!! pathetic!

Well Dalfort he will pay hella tax on that, not sure how much tho.
Posted by Garion on 2014-06-27 09:07:17
No chainsaw you are a moron if you think these actions are that of someone without serious mental issues. He is without doubt a danger on the pitch. When will a life time ban happen, are we waiting until he ruins someone's career with another momentary lapse. Cantona got a season ban and community service for kicking someone. Joey Barton spent time in jail for assault. Are we waiting for Suarez to stub a cigar out in a youth players face like Barton did.
Posted by Russo on 2014-06-27 10:10:11
Chainsaw - your argument maybe valid against casual football watchers who live on social media or the writers of tabloid headlines but in the case of Evander Holyfield you seem to be saying it's ok to bite unless you do serious damage. I am sorry if I were a footballer or match official I would not want to lose an ear, nose, finger, testicle or any other part of my body before any serious measures are taken.

As in life there is a sliding scale of escalation. Suarez is paying the price for showing he is a serial offender, his punishment would have been far less if it were his first offence. The point of escalation is to drive home the need to change ones behaviour. And if a successive ban becomes unseemly long then guess what ITS THE OFFENDERS OWN FAULT for being a reckless irresponsible sociopath. Indeed the paranoia that seems to be coming from his home country maybe indicates that there is a high tolerance for anti social behaviour back home. Sadly when out in the rest of the world he is subject to a higher level of expectation about social functions.

As for your point about Iraq and the countless atrocities in various parts if the world, that applies to everything we do. If someone raped and murdered your friends or family would you stay calm and say "aww well in the big picture it's not important". No you damn well wouldn't, and that would be compounded if you then discovered he was a serial offender and had been arrested twice before for the same offence.

Ultimately FIFA have a duty of care to players to be seen to doing everything possible to promote fair play and protecting the players. I know FIFA is a morally ambiguous bunch of old men at best but I think they have been slightly easy on him in respects to other offences committed by other players.
Posted by fly on 2014-06-27 10:18:05
i've spotted some little suarez within this 'thread'.
do you remember last world cup where he did everything to win?
he stopped a certain goal by hand and had his team advance, taking a red mng card in process.
having such people on a world stage be an idol (willing or unwilling) is creating more of that species.
LIFETIME BAN!
Posted by Fingard on 2014-06-27 10:26:14
What I find crazy is we italians are big whiners (yes we are, on average), but if Balotelli or Cassano - two big idiots, known for their lack of control and lack of many other things, brain included - bit someone, NO ONE would whine about this 4 months ban.
Well, someone would.
But for sure not our President, Prime Minister, manager, captain etc...
Posted by koadah on 2014-06-27 11:44:15
He is appealing against the ban.

That will be a good opportunity to increase it to at least 6 months.
Posted by Valen on 2014-06-27 12:56:05
If he deserves a 4 month ban for that I hope that the next time someone two foots another player potentially ending the other players carear, he gets at least 6 month ban.

The next time someone vicously elbows another player in the face possibly fracturing bones, 4 month ban at least.

4 months because he was hungry, nah not for me lol
Posted by koadah on 2014-06-27 13:21:19
If they are doing for the THIRD time then yes. Ban them all.
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-27 13:24:54
Russo your logic is laughable. I cba to respond.

That you extrapolate it to the degree that I could also be saying murder or rape should be overlooked, that misses my point by such a wide margin that you just should delete that comment. They ARE the real bad things in the world I talked about, FFS.
Posted by Woodstock on 2014-06-27 13:31:06
The ban should've included intensive mandatory professional help, failing to get help would result in a lifetime ban. FIFA dropped the ball there...
Posted by JanMattys on 2014-06-27 13:38:21
Chainsaw, Suarez is a multi-millionaire who is unable to adhere to rules in a glorified game, which professional sport is, after all.

So, would it be so bad and out of order if they banned him for life?

A permanent ban is not something out of order, as you stated. It's just telling a multi-millionaire young guy that he won't be able to cash in any more on a multi-million-industry because he's too stupid, too aggressive and too hot-headed for it.

A permaban is not a life sentence. It's just "hey, thanks for playing, that is the door. You were born with exceptional talent, you wasted it because you are too stupid. Now find another way to support yourself, you are not welcome in our very priviledged inner circle any more because you are stupid, you are aggressive, you are a bad example for our audience".

It's not like they are taking back everything he had. He will still live a better life than 99,99% of the people of the world.

But he won't be able to cash on it any more, and probably won't be able to use his professional player image to sign new contracts with sponsors.

And I am TOTALLY ok with it.
Posted by gjopie on 2014-06-27 14:07:30
Great post, JanMattys.

Another thing I'd point out is that it isn't just the people calling for bans that are sensationalising this. Diego Maradona said about the sanction: "The Fifa sanction is shameful, they have no sensitivity towards the fans, they might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo".

Talk about losing perspective. A millionaire has been banned from playing a game for 4 months and people compare it to life imprisonment without trial? Bizarre.

I think we, as a species, just love the drama.
Posted by cdassak on 2014-06-27 14:16:21
@fly Concerning his sending off in the previous world cup
Any player would have done the same in his place, the choice is a no brainer, concede the goal and lose the game or concede the penalty and take my chances in the kick.
Let's not blame the guy with more than he is guilty of...
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-06-27 14:47:01
Beating a player about the head until he is unconscious and suffers a detached retina... punishment? Banned for six games with a further six game ban suspended for two years and fined £25,000.

Even Chiellini, the "victim" of this horrendous debilitating scarring soul destroying nibble by Suarez, even he says the ban is excessive.

Not that that will stop all these high horses.

I don't know, both events are unsporting.

One is incredibly smart, the other incredibly stupid.

I do not believe everyone would do the smart and unsporting thing. Most people probably wouldn't even think of it in the split second of time there is to react.

I can respect anyone who is smart. But if you strike out twice and do it the second time for no understandable reason at all, odds are that you didn't do it for a smart reason the first time either.

It gives more of an idea with what kind of person he is.

@Chainsaw Joey Barton was tried in court for that incident, and also received a 4 month suspended sentence. Since it happened during training, it isn't even clear it should fall under the remit of the FA, to be honest. It was assault!

This is clearly a different case.

And to be honest, the only person here who sounds like he is on a high horse is you. You seem to take pride in taking offence at everyone else taking offence!

Ivanovic laughed about it, Chiellini is well over it, everyone in the media and on the internet still have their panties in a twist...

Although i agree with various statements above, to me it seems quite simple: If you are stupid enough to get caught biting someone for the 3rd time whilst at the biggest competition in the world then quite frankly you deserve whatever you get. I mean come on, the ban goes up every time you do it and then you start whining about how unfair it is that your banned, seriously. As they say if you can't do the time don't do the crime. Plus what you have to remember is that money is king in football, right or wrong matter little as long as is doesn't affect the money and in this case people can't risk losing sponsors over an incident like this so the punishment has to be harsh or else companies might want to put thier money into something else which isn't seen to be condoning what is behaviour that i can't imagine any company wants to be associated with which ever way you look at it (nibble or assault).
Also i'm a little surpised that there aren't more vampire references in here, maybe we will see a spat of little Suarez's poping up on the pitch in honor of this moment.

If blood bowl ever does get another edition there is sure to be a Saurez themed did you know. They'll probably call him something like Louey 'the Fang' Sorez or something sito that effect.
