Guilt and BB
I've been feeling quite a bit of regret after a league game that went a little too well [despite my comical attempt to throw away the W]. When the dust had settled, my opponent's team had suffered 5 perms and a death.

If it were in Ranked or Blackbox, I wouldn't bat an eyelid over it. At the time I might have winced on my opponent's behalf, perhaps smiled a bit or had a quiet chuckle, but a few minutes later then it's on to the next moment in life. In open leagues, dead pixels are of little consequence. Teams can be retired on a whim, new ones formed, etc; there's an easy way back into the fold assuming players don't ragequit the site.

In a league, however, it's different. Historically, I'm not much of a league player and thus haven't given much thought to it. 5 seasons in with the OWCC (a great league, by the way - always something to play for due to the swiss-style 5 game conference followed by the tiered cups), player drop outs have been a bit of a burden (league manager gjopie has done an amazing job) and the collaborative nature of a league is starting to be more apparent. A league is only as good as the majority of its participants. If you don't have enough reliable participants then it's not going to be a long term success.

So maiming teams isn't really in your interest. Yes, you may gain the upper hand in your league, but you might drive away guys who lose interest when their team is crippled and they face a long way back to being competitive. The game in question was a bit of a perfect storm of dice - which will happen - but I should have laid off with the clawpomb in the 2nd half once the game was over and simply consolidated my position and let WeeManBiggins get out the game with enough of a team that he'd still be up for his next match.

I hope he sticks at it but I do, for once, feel bad about the severity of the outcome.

Rated 6 for publicly repenting your wicked ways (and mostly for the OWCC plug)!

I haven't had a chance to watch the replay yet, but yes, if you've got the game won then in those circumstances I probably would've laid off too. No sense in turning the screw in situations like that.

Unless of course your teams have history, or you are the underdog in general.

Pfft! Kill all mens! No mercy!!!

Good words! Go OWCC!

Yo Jimmy, how's [L] play working out for you?
Posted by Badoek on 2014-02-19 14:59:28
Not maiming the team makes sense. Maimed they might become an easier win for any of your own direct competitors. Keep them in decent shape and they might give them a harder time. League meta mmmmm

6/1/1 is not bad though o_O
Also this massacre sertainly makes it easier for the other teams in our group to have a chance against them :D Thx!

ClawPOMB causes casualties?

Who'da thunk it?

Sissy elfs get what they deserve though. L is made for this kind of thing honestly, so unless your league has some kind of mercy rule I wouldn't sweat it. Yes, there is something to the thought that you should leave a team in better shape for those who will face it next, but I've never really subscribed to that.

The only thing I feel unnecessary are the late fouls/surfs when the game is in hand and the opponent has started running his remaining players away, or is just leaving them prone.

If they stand up, hit them :) Especially if they are legends.

I hear you, Chainsaw... I played a relatively newcomer to the game in my tabletop league the other night (T3FL) and my Norse rather smacked his dorfs around. I had my Block/MB Ulf go nuts on his AV8 guys (niggled the runner and armour busted the slayer). Felt bad for him as a coach... hoping I didn't turn someone off from the game. And yet they were dorfs, so... how bad should I feel, really!??!

"Just stick with CRP. It works pretty well."

Chainsaw on POMB.

Made not only my day but also made me withdraw from the league (especially after speccing the final) without any regrets ^^
Posted by Chainsaw on 2014-02-19 19:15:21
Nah, pomb itself is ok. Frenzy plus clawpomb is pretty nasty but when the elves fouled him, armour was not passed with +3 and the ref sent the elf off the declined the bribe! It was just nasty dice overall, and the clawpomb did little until late in the 2nd.

I don't like surfing/fouling late because you get no SPP gain from it, but it also depends on what the opponent is doing. If they keep standing guys up and taking blitzes for shots at the ball or to try to do damage then I'm going to keep hitting back as hard as I can. Clearly you haven't been devastated enough if you're still making plays back! And I will always take blocks with guys who still need SPP to level. I may be hoping for badly hurt results, but I'll take what I can get.

My League experience tells me that, once your win is safe (and sometimes that is quite difficult to tell) you should definitely lay off harming your opponent... you want them to take points off your rivals in the league after all.

Sort of like Jose Mourinho justifying the sale of Mata to Man Utd because Chelsea had played Utd twice already, and Mata would help take points off Chelsea's title contender opponents.

That being said... if you were playing a team that is always your rival up the top, and is a bashy team... if you get the chance to take them out big time, I would think that would be a good idea... There's always a danger they will retire the team as they lose key and interesting players, but I would hope long standing league coaches would simply rejoin the feeder divisions with a new team to explore.

Every player you take out makes it easier for the next guy. So technically you are helping out the league on a whole. I like to
Give an all Menz Line O' Scrimmage at the end of a one sided Afair. That way I don't feel bad because he has had a shot at hitting my any of my Menz at the end.
