Today, I received the prototype FUMBBL block dice I ordered some time ago, and figured I'd post an image and a bit more information on the potential block dice run.
As you can see, these are the translucent black variant. The photo is taken with fairly bright lights pointing at them to highlight this fact. In regular tabletop light, the effect is a bit more subtle.
A couple of quick facts:
- The size (16mm) is identical to previous dice batches and use the same source images.
- The faces are set up on the same sides but are not rotated identically.
- The etching depth is shallower than previous batches, maybe halved.
- The designs are marginally smaller than before.
- The quality of etching is roughly the same as before.
- The painted die in the above image is using the same yellow paint as the prior batches, but a different blue. These colours are not final, and I will evaluate a couple of alternatives for the dice I'll send out. Potentially go back to the same colours as previous batches.
I'm very happy with how these dice look, and will be making these available to people who want them.
Practical details:
- $20 per set of 3, plus shipping (see below).
- No options for cube colours in order to reduce the production cost overall. Only these translucent black ones.
- If there is a huge demand for another colour, I may add one more option. Huge in this context means on the order of 50+ sets of something other than the translucent black ones.
- The design can be shipped either white (as produced and shown in two of the dice above) or painted yellow and black as per the official site colour scheme (with blue and yellow parts hand-painted). Exact hues will probably differ slightly from the image above and either match the previous years' batches or as close to the image on the site front page as is feasible without complex mixing of paint.
Shipping costs are as follows:
- Up to 4 sets: $5
- Up to 10 sets: $10
- For more than 10 sets, get in touch for more detailed shipping cost.
- Tracking adds a flat $15. Will be required for orders of 10 or more sets.
- Customs and import fees are not included (dice will be shipped from Sweden)
Timeframe:
- Orders will be taken over a period of a few weeks (not yet please, I will post instructions for orders when I'm ready to take them).
- Payment will need to be up-front, shortly after the closing of the order window at the latest.
- To keep costs low, the dice will be produced using the slowest option from the manufacturer, which is 45 days of production.
- Once I receive the dice, I will need to paint them all, which will probably take a week or two.
- With this in mind, my intent is to be able to get dice sent off in November, which should reach your hands before the end of the year.
I'd be happy to hear what you think about the dice and if you're still interested in getting one or more sets with this additional information available.
