TV and CTV
I just pushed an update to the site which will affect the team pages on the site. Before I go into too many details about why this change was necessary and bury important information at the end of a long blog post, the changes are as follows:

- The Team Value displayed on team pages is updated to a new BB2020 compliant version of TV. This includes the cost of MNG players.
- The "Tournament Weight" field has been replaced by "Current Team Value", which is more like what TV used to be (and as such does not include MNG players).
- At this point, this is strictly only something that is visible on the team page and is not really used anywhere else (LFG and Blackbox scheduler for example). The old value is still shown on the coach overview team table.

The reason for this update is, as you may imagine, in preparation for BB2020 and I would like as many people as possible to verify that the TV and CTV values look like they should. To make this easier to verify, the site automatically compares the old TV with the new version and shows both numbers in the form 1200k / 1150k (with a third number appearing for Ogre and Snotling rosters, which excludes the cost of disposable players as well).

Typically, you will see the two numbers when there are players missing the next game, at which point the second number (old TV) should instead match the value for Current Team Value further down the team page.

If you find any discrepancies on your team, please get in touch with me with a link to said team and I will look into what is causing this problem.

With that out of the way, let me get into why this change is being made and what is happening "under the hood".

Way back in the day of the dinosaurs, FUMBBL was using the LRB4 ruleset. Back then, teams did not have a Team Value (TV) but instead used something called a Team Rating (TR). Team Rating started at 100 (no unit), and was essentially TV divided by 10000, or from the other perspective, TV became TR multiplied by 10000 to match the gold value of the team.

Back then, a team had a "rating" property in the FUMBBL database, which was simply set as an integer that started at 100 for typical teams. With the changeover to LRB5 and the introduction of TV, the way TV was stored on FUMBBL was simply dividing the TV by 10000 and storing the resulting number in the same "rating" field. Nothing in the game had costs that had a higher "resolution" than 10k anyway and the site happily kept on running without any problems.

This was all fine until the introduction of the BB2020 ruleset, where the "resolution" of Team Value has been increased, and there are things that has costs that are at 5k increments instead. This is fundamentally a problem for the FUMBBL data model, and I needed to take the bull by the horns and update the internal way of handling Team Value.

There were a few options available to me:

1. Go through all the code on the site and remove the "10k scaling" from everywhere and adjust all TV based systems.
2. Change the "rating" column to allow non-integer values such as 123.5.
3. Introduce a new field into the data model and incrementally switch over to using that one instead.

As you may have guessed, I chose option 3 here primarily because it's the least disruptive way and allows me to slowly move things over as appropriate, with a very "low-risk" variant to begin with where it's strictly a visual change. While I was at it, I also introduced the Current Team Value concept into the data model, which is also being calculated at the same time.

With that, there are 5 variant TV values on the site:

1. New Team Value
2. New Current Team Value
3. Old Team Value
4. Tournament Weight
5. A variant of Old Team Value where Disposable players are included (used for pairing in LFG and Box Scheduler systems).

Hopefully, these new TV and CTV variants don't cause any significant issues. Backing these values is a system that understands the differences between BB2016 and BB2020, so FFB Test division teams should have their TV and CTV be calculated in a more accurate way (most significantly, Dedicated Fans are not included in TV calculation with BB2020).

So, please take a look at your team pages and report any errors you find to me for investigation. I'll update this blog post if/when there are corrections made to the calculation and add a bit of a changelog. Remember that at this stage, there is no additional functionality to these new variants and they're strictly "for show".

Changes:
- Updated CTV calculation to be reduced by the cost of Disposable players. Disposable has technically been replaced by Low Cost Linemen in BB2020, so this is strictly a fix for BB2016 ruleset teams (Ogre and Snotlings).
- Swapped CTV and TV on the team sheet. It makes more sense to compare CTV to old TV (which is intended to always be the same).

My snotling team played their last game with a tv of 1370 and the only change I think since is that one is mng. Since the change it now says our tv is 1620 and our current tv is 1580. The gap of 40 makes me wonder as the mng is a 20k snot with no skills and that's obviously a significant difference in tv overall too. Hope this helps.

As an example
https://fumbbl.com/p/team?team_id=1033998
Before the change 950TV made sense, and I can understand 1200TV (950 + 50 for the bomber MNG + 200 for the 10 Snotlings Inc the journeymen).

Then the 1110TV....is that 950TV plus the 8 available Snotlings (Inc journeymen)?

Same logic seems to work for the Snotlings above so I think I get it - hurrah!
Posted by C0ddlefish on 2021-07-26 08:51:08
Malmir - 1370 - 1 FF + 1 normal skill = 1380
Posted by Malmir on 2021-07-26 11:37:07
So is the change because snots now count towards tv and didn’t before?
Posted by Christer on 2021-07-26 12:02:10
Updated the calculation to properly reduce CTV by the cost of Disposable players (Disposable isn't a thing in BB2020; replaced by Low Cost Linemen). Also switched the TV and CTV fields on the team page and use CTV to compare against old TV, which should hopefully always match.
