Offtopic: I bought a car
I know it's not the most interesting thing to you guys, but I just bought my first car, and that's a big deal for me (before this the most money I ever spent at once was on a PC). Since I spend a lot of time in this community, I still wanted to share with you guys.
Living in the center of Amsterdam, I never felt the need for one, but now (age 32), with 2 kids (one almost 5 and one just 3), the pros started outweighing the cons. Never having owned a car, I haven't really driven much, but this one should see frequent trips to the camping and I'll be taking it up to Auxerre, France this summer.
For those interested, it's a 2008 Nissan Note Life, 1.6 liter. So yeah, I drive a car whose average owner is in their 60s. =D

@Kam, my father travels the French canals by summer, we'll be visiting him on his boat for a week.
@mrt; I had also gone without driving for several years, but actually took some improv lessons with a close friend in his car, before borrowing another a car for a week recently, which went fine.

Train is fine, it's getting to and from the train with kids + luggage that's an issue.
Going to our caravan takes 2 hours by bike, 2 hours by train + walks, or 30 mins by car. Spending 2 x 2 hours travel is quite a chunk out of your weekend.

I once visited the French canals in the summer.
I won't make that mistake again ;)
But yes, car is generally better than bus or train for vacation/weekend type trips. Last time we took the train for a trip, the damn thing derailed, so we had to take a bus to get back, not only did that bus take 2h to do what the train would have done in 20m, but some old guy vomited on a nice lady sitting in front of him!
Though the bus from Montpiellier to Bedareaux is fine, but it's almost all highway. Train going north is beautiful going up the valleys, but apparently that track has a lot of issues, so you wind up stuck in Millau a lot and taking the bus back. Which if it were straight to Bedareaux would be fine, but it has to make the same stops the train would make in all those tiny villages along the way... so... it sucks :)
